Cubs Cut 7 More

Muskat reports the Cubs have optioned Kevin Hart and Randy Wells to Triple A. Outfielders Brad Snyder (who was already outrighted off the 40-man roster) and So Taguchi have been assigned to minor league camp, along with infielders Estaban German and Andres Blanco and catcher Mark Johnson. That gives Joey Gathright the final bench spot with just the decision between Paul Bako and Koyie Hill left for the backup catching duties.

A list of the final 30 players left in camp after the jump.

CATCHERS - Soto, Bako, Hill

INFIELDERS - Lee, Theriot, Miles, Fontenot, Ramirez, Hoffpauir

OUTFIELDERS - Soriano, Fukudome, Johnson, Bradley, Gathright

STARTING PITCHING: Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly, Harden, Marshall

RELIEF PITCHING:  Gregg, Marmol, Heilman, Vizcaino, Cotts, Gaudin, Patton, Guzman, Fox, Stanton, Samardzija

Samardzija seems certain he'll be optioned to Triple A, which makes it between Gaudin, Patton, Guzman, Fox and Stanton for the final 2 bullpen spots.

Comments

I can't really imagine a scenario where Stanton would get one of those two spots. The easiest scenario would be to simply keep Gaudin and Guzman, and not add Fox or Stanton to the roster, and return Patton. But it will be interesting to see how it shakes out. I wonder what they will do with Patton. Why would you draft a guy in the Rule 5 if when he does excel in spring training you can't keep him anyway? I mean, shouldn't that be the point? Hopefully they can work out a deal to keep him in the minors somehow at least.

Hopefully they can work out a deal to keep him in the minors somehow at least. Rule 5 players cannot be demoted to the minors unless they've already passed through waivers. So there's a pretty tough gauntlet to pass before you could "work out a deal" with the original club.

kinda worrisome some of the excess hasn't been traded yet. even with a spotty spring i thought a.guzman would have found a new home by now.

z.greinke (KC) just struck out a.beltre (SEA) on a slow/sharp breaker called strike. it was awesome cuz mr. mental greinke threw the ball and basically rode out of the end of his motion walking toward the dugout. he knew he had it...and he did. beltre didn't know whether to be pissed at greinke or the ump so just sat there generally yelling. nothing came of it...fun.

right or wrong mark cuban revels in the attention. watching basketball has nothing to do with an owner who consistantly makes an ass of himself, elevates himself above the game, and finds it funny to break rules and pay fines. he consistently makes himself bigger than the game and loves the aftermath. it's little wonder MLB owners aren't too keen on the guy...much like steiny back in the day he doesn't have many friends as it is in the league he's already in. maybe he should WATCH more basketball...

Boy, I dont know how you can send Patton back at this point. Perhaps this was the final face-off with Gaudin. I have to wonder if Gaudin even gets picked up if we cut him.

Rob G. how does it seem certain that Samardzija is headed to Iowa? On what info do you have you can make this statement. I just got back from AZ. and watched 6 games myself. I don't agree with you at all that Fox Stanton Guzman or Patton are our relief picthers. Patton only pitches when the starters are out of the game. Like the A's game when he came in the game the score was 19 - 2 cubs. He still gave up a double and a walk.

his 9.00 ERA and that he has options left while the other pitchers don't....

Barring a trade or injury, two of these 5 will make the team - Fox, Stanton, Gaudin, Guzman or Patton. If Harden goes on the DL to start the season, it might be 3 of those 5.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.
