Cubs Cut 7 More

Muskat reports the Cubs have optioned Kevin Hart and Randy Wells to Triple A. Outfielders Brad Snyder (who was already outrighted off the 40-man roster) and So Taguchi have been assigned to minor league camp, along with infielders Estaban German and Andres Blanco and catcher Mark Johnson. That gives Joey Gathright the final bench spot with just the decision between Paul Bako and Koyie Hill left for the backup catching duties.

A list of the final 30 players left in camp after the jump.

CATCHERS - Soto, Bako, Hill

INFIELDERS - Lee, Theriot, Miles, Fontenot, Ramirez, Hoffpauir

OUTFIELDERS - Soriano, Fukudome, Johnson, Bradley, Gathright

STARTING PITCHING: Zambrano, Dempster, Lilly, Harden, Marshall

RELIEF PITCHING:  Gregg, Marmol, Heilman, Vizcaino, Cotts, Gaudin, Patton, Guzman, Fox, Stanton, Samardzija

Samardzija seems certain he'll be optioned to Triple A, which makes it between Gaudin, Patton, Guzman, Fox and Stanton for the final 2 bullpen spots.

Comments

I can't really imagine a scenario where Stanton would get one of those two spots.

The easiest scenario would be to simply keep Gaudin and Guzman, and not add Fox or Stanton to the roster, and return Patton.

But it will be interesting to see how it shakes out. I wonder what they will do with Patton. Why would you draft a guy in the Rule 5 if when he does excel in spring training you can't keep him anyway? I mean, shouldn't that be the point? Hopefully they can work out a deal to keep him in the minors somehow at least.

Hopefully they can work out a deal to keep him in the minors somehow at least.

Rule 5 players cannot be demoted to the minors unless they've already passed through waivers. So there's a pretty tough gauntlet to pass before you could "work out a deal" with the original club.

2-run HR off Lilly in the first...take a guess by who?

Scott Eyre?

Chris Young. Then he threw his glove.

Derosa HR's again....

I like the time stamp on that comment, Rob.

if you have it set for Central Time. Which you don't. *sigh*

Lee goes out in the 5th after pulling up lame...

kinda worrisome some of the excess hasn't been traded yet.

even with a spotty spring i thought a.guzman would have found a new home by now.

z.greinke (KC) just struck out a.beltre (SEA) on a slow/sharp breaker called strike.

it was awesome cuz mr. mental greinke threw the ball and basically rode out of the end of his motion walking toward the dugout. he knew he had it...and he did.

beltre didn't know whether to be pissed at greinke or the ump so just sat there generally yelling. nothing came of it...fun.

and seattle gets the lead over kc... 7-8 kc/sea

...in the bottom 2nd

gee...wonder why mark cuban wasn't taken more seriously as a possible owner...

http://msn.foxsports.com/nba/story/9394926/Maveric...$25,000

love his comment...it's all about him (again). he sure takes pride in not learning a lesson over and over and over.

psst, cuban...there's a team and an entire league that's more important than you...just ask what's left of steinbrenner about that.

you must not watch a lot of basketball....

right or wrong mark cuban revels in the attention.

watching basketball has nothing to do with an owner who consistantly makes an ass of himself, elevates himself above the game, and finds it funny to break rules and pay fines.

he consistently makes himself bigger than the game and loves the aftermath. it's little wonder MLB owners aren't too keen on the guy...much like steiny back in the day he doesn't have many friends as it is in the league he's already in.

maybe he should WATCH more basketball...

yea... it had nothing to do with money and cuban's interest.

oh wait...

Boy, I dont know how you can send Patton back at this point.

Perhaps this was the final face-off with Gaudin. I have to wonder if Gaudin even gets picked up if we cut him.

Rob G. how does it seem certain that Samardzija is headed to Iowa? On what info do you have you can make this statement. I just got back from AZ. and watched 6 games myself. I don't agree with you at all that Fox Stanton Guzman or Patton are our relief picthers. Patton only pitches when the starters are out of the game. Like the A's game when he came in the game the score was 19 - 2 cubs. He still gave up a double and a walk.

Rob G. how does it seem certain that Samardzija is headed to Iowa?

his 9.00 ERA and that he has options left while the other pitchers don't....

I don't agree with you at all that Fox Stanton Guzman or Patton are our relief picthers.

Barring a trade or injury, two of these 5 will make the team - Fox, Stanton, Gaudin, Guzman or Patton. If Harden goes on the DL to start the season, it might be 3 of those 5.

8.16 ERA

Before yesterday's game it was 8.93, which is effectively 9.00. But when it comes to ERA, arguing about 8.1 or 8.9 is pointless.

i swear when I looked it up before I posted it yesterday, it was 9.00, 13 ER in 13 IP...but whatever....

Just further proof that you hate Jeff, ninjas, and hunchbacks.

  • That's a hell of a first impression by Montgomery. Brian Cashman having a good laugh on that debut.

  • I thought the same. It'd be great luck to face these non-contenders after the trade deadline.

Chris Sale was scratched from tonight's scheduled start due to a clubhouse incident before the game

    ...wow

  • He was scratched from his start today. No reason given.

  • At the start of the season the book was that he was trying to pitch to more contact so he could stay in the game longer and it seems to be working so far. Contact against is 77.5% this year and it was 70.2% the year before. He averaged 6.7 IP/game last year and so far it's 7 IP/game. His actual pitches per game are only down to 106.1/game from 107.2/game last year but if he's able to go a bit farther into games without throwing more pitches and without giving up more runs that is a good thing.

  • sale's skills and insane value makes it almost too hard to have a market for the guy...he's got 3/38m owed to him over 3 seasons (2 team options). he could easily pull in 30m/yr if he was on the market as a FA.

he's throwing a bit differently this season, especially with more sliders and less changeups like earlier in his career, but all his stuff still looks great even if the HRs are a little elevated and the Ks are down.

  • Torres, Happ, McKinney, Jimenez, and Candelario for Sale. Deal or no deal?

  • Unless he develops 30+ HR power and keeps his walk rate close to his K rate at the MLB level, he's not going to turn into Prince Fielder. And even if he does turn into Prince Fielder, he's gonna have a short prime. His very limited athleticism is likely to also detract some value from his ability to reach base--I don't buy making an out as being preferable to base clogging, but you'd certainly prefer just about any base runner other than Vogelbach, David Ortiz, etc.

  • seeing as arod has played a total of 27.1 innings of D at 1st/3rd and somehow managed a -0.5 dWAR with his 1 error at 1st and an overall positive total zone rating...he might end up even more in the shitter via the characteristics/flaws/whatever of how some sites determine various WAR values. dWAR doesn't directly lead to a WAR value, but the 2 main entities pushing the most popular variations of WAR sometimes lead to some interesting discrepancies in value.

  • I have a lot of faith in Baez that he's going to turn into a more consistent, solid player. It looks like it took him about a half season or so of futility at the plate to figure out he was not talented enough to get away with the crazy approach he had. I think his running game will eventually have a more measured aggression.
