A Season of Change: McDonough Steps Down

Chicago Cubs team president John McDonough will be moving to the West Side and become the Blackhawks new man in charge. McDonough had been with the Cubs organization since 1983, although most Cubs fans hadn't heard of him until last year when he took over as team president from Andy MacPhail. According to our wonderful readers from various radio reports, Crane Kenney will step in to take over his Cubs duties. With ownership in limbo and McDonough supposedly not working with any contract, it's probably a smart move on his part as chances of him remaining with the club under new ownership were slim. Kenney was the guy that McDonough reported to as is, so it's doubtful this will change much of the Cubs offseason plans.

Hmm - So we can plan on a Beanie Baby giveway at the UC when we go to a back hawks game?

Rob, I have to disagree that most Cub fans hadn't heard of McDonough until last year. I'd be willing to bet he was the most well-known team Marketing Director in all of professional sports, partly because some of his innovations, e.g., the fan convention and the Beanie Baby giveaway (good call, Rory), got so much attention and partly because McDonough was never shy about going on the air and letting radio hosts shower him with compliments. (Dave Kaplan, who I normally love, is sickening with McDonough; Chet Coppock, who I normally despise, is almost as bad.) All in all, this is a bigger win for the Hawks than it is a loss for the Cubs. The idea that McDonough drove the Tower to up the payroll last off-season is preposterous. He was under-qualified for the President's job and was smart to get out before the new owner showed him the door. With the Blackhawks, he'll get to impact Marketing, which is what he knows.

Just in case Manny is busy during the holiday week: Another Cubs Executive is gone but Teflon Jim stays!!!! AMAZING!!!

Rest assured BBlue, Hendry will saddle us with at least 3 more crippling, backloaded deals on his way out the door.

Ya, but at least it looks like Matsui isn’t going to be one of them. who says?

Dr. Aaronb - "Hendry will saddle us with at least 3 more crippling, backloaded deals on his way out the door." Hendry has to offer backloaded deals...how else could we afford to sign potential starters, coming off of the DL, hoping to make a comeback...

LATEST from Crane Kenney: From ChicagoSports.com "Originally posted: November 20, 2007 McDonough leaving Cubs UPDATED 12:09 p.m. Cubs president John McDonough will be introduced as the new president of the Blackhawks at a noon news conference at the United Center. Full story here. In a statement, the Cubs said Crane Kenney, who took over marketing the team when McDonough was promoted to president in October 2006, will oversee the team's business operations while general manager Jim Hendry will lead the baseball side. "It has been a privilege to be associated with the Chicago Cubs and to be identified with one of the greatest franchises in all of sports," McDonough said in a statement. "Cubs fans truly deserve a World Series Championship and I hope they realize it in 2008." "We will not let the ownership transition distract us from our primary goal: to see a championship come to the Chicago Cubs in 2008," Kenney said in statement. "Jim Hendry has a well-constructed plan in place and is already working to strengthen our roster for 2008." Biz as usual, folks.

how else could we afford to sign potential starters, coming off of the DL, hoping to make a comeback… Like who?

“Jim Hendry has a well-constructed plan in place and is already working to strengthen our roster for 2008.” SHENANIGANS!!! When has Jim Hendry ever had a plan? :)

oh for fuck's sake, Rollins wins the NL MVP 353 to 336 over Holliday. 5 more first place votes but Holliday had 11 more second place votes. Somebody thought Holliday was no better than 6th. I give up.... Rollins, Holliday, Fielder, Wright, Howard, Jones, Peavy, Utley, Pujols, Ramirez, Byrnes Soriano 12th (got a 3rd place vote), Ramirez 13th, Marmol got a 10th place vote

To get to the next level the Cubs need: a right fielder with fielding skills, a strong arm and some pop in his bat Get stronger up the middle with: a wide-ranging center fielder who can hit for average a shortstop with some power a catcher, if Soto turns out not to be "the one" Plus some pitching: one more quality SP a new closer Hendry's plan: Load up on marginal second basemen and let them "fight it out" for all those jobs

Re: #15.. Hanley Ramirez finished 10th, Aramis Ramirez finished 13th if that wasn't clear.

Any one else starting to think Andruw Jones is a possibility for the Cubs now? With Fukudome leaning towards the Yomunri Giants leaving us with a pile of free agent cash for an OF and Jones not having alot, if any suitors at the moment. Boras has said he will not look for a one year deal for Jones, but would that change if we threw 20 mil his way? If Hendry does have 30 mil to spend it still leaves him another to sign Wood and bench upgrades. Plus he could save cash by dumping Demp or Marquis. I would love our line-up of: Sori Theriot Lee Ram Jones Soto Dero Murton P

I would not love Andruw Jones. I'm sorry. I just don't think that posting 222/311/413 in a contract year in over 500 AB's can be dismissed as some odd quirk that magically fixes itself.

Jones would be great on a 1 year deal. He plays like hell to max his value. Cubs reap the rewards. Plus they get the Type A free agency compensation when he leaves to sign long term with Baltimore next year. Win/Win

I'd take Andruw on a one year deal, he won't hit 220 next year. If he just raises his BA to 250, his line goes up to 250/340/450 which is decent at least. Chances are I think he'll do even better than that...

Kenney on the sale... http://chicago.cubs.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20071120&content_id=23… "The process is one that we control a part of, and [Major League Baseball] controls a part of, and the various bidders who have an interest ... control some of the timing," Kenney said Tuesday. "My expectation is that there will be some clarification of team ownership by the middle of next year. It's gone slower than we thought it would, but we're also comfortable with the pace."

Soriano 12th (got a 3rd place vote), Ramirez 13th, Marmol got a 10th place vote Can someone please explain a few things: - How Soriano got a 3rd place vote - How Soriano was the most valuable player on the Cubs - How a middle relief pitcher can get mvp votes - How Soriano and ARam got MVP votes, but not DLee.

Jay Mariotti and Phil Rogers get votes. I'm shocked that Kerry Wood or Jack Jones didnt get votes

well Soriano led the team in homers and if you looked at your RSS feed for Chadball, you'd know that team went as Soriano went..

Childersb3: Miguel Cruz walked six in 1.2 IP in his last start, so I guess he is improving. Wilme Mora also walked six in one of his appearances a week or two ago, and one or two others have walked five. I don't know what would be the most I have ever seen a pitcher throw in a game out here, because the manager / pitching coach usually gets the pitcher out of the game if it gets too ridiculous.

As for the attendance, probably about 20 of the 25 were early arrivals for the Savannah Bananas game who came over to Field # 1 to see what was going on, and once they saw all the bases on balls (12 walks by Cubs pitchers and four by Angels pitchers) they ran away screaming. I'm used to it so it didn't bother me that much.

Jed has added Teheran, Tyranski, Kissaki, and now Straily and Nico Zeglin today.

Zeglin is 24 yrs old. Pitched well at Long Beach St in '23 and well in some Indy Ball.

They also added Reilly and Viets in late ST.

Have to search for MiLB arm depth anywhere you can and at all times!!!

    25 in Attendance!!!

Phil, is that a backfield record?

Also, 6 BBs for Cruz in 2 IP. What's the most walks you've seen in one EXT ST outing that you can recall?

He has a pulse. Apparently that’s the only requirement at this point.

cubs sign dan straily...for some reason.  minor league deal.

    welcome back.

zac rosscup is down in mexico trying to make it happen...maybe they could throw him a contract, too.  junior lake is his teammate.  shore up a bunch of holes with some washups.

The great thing about going to live sports events is you don't know if you're going to see something historic. Today I went to the Cub game, after putting the liner back in my coat and fishing my Cubs knit hat out of the closet. I needed all that- my seats are in the upper deck, left, so the east wind was in my face. Both teams failed to capitalize on good situations, but both starters did a good job to accomplish this. So, we go to the bottom of the sixth inning. The Cubs tie it up, and then Pete Crow-Armstrong comes up. We all know he would still be in AAA if not for injuries, and future Hall-of-Famer Justin Verlander absolutely carved up the young fellow up in his first two plate appearances. So this time he hits a fly ball. The wind was blowing in and had suppressed several strong fly balls- including a rocket off Altuve's bat that Canario hauled in (does anybody else remind me of Jorge Soler?) , but the ball kept carrying and carrying. 107mph, legit angle and carry. The crowd went nuts, the dugout went nuts. Maybe, just maybe, I saw the first homer from a long-term Cub.

Which was my original premise. They won the trades but lost their souls. They no longer employ the Cardinal way which had been so successful for so long.

STL traded away a lot of minor league talent that went on to do nothing in the arenado + goldschmidt trades.  neither guy blocked any of their minor league talent in the pipeline, too.  that's ideal places to add talent.

Natural cycle of baseball. Pitching makes adjustments in approach to counter a hot young rookie. Now it’s time for Busch and his coaches to counter those adjustments. Busch is very good and will figure it out, I think sooner than later.

In 2020, the pandemic year and the year before they acquired Arenado, the Cardinals finished second and were a playoff team. Of the 12 batters with 100 plate appearances, 8 of them were home grown. Every member of the starting rotation (if you include Wainwright) and all but one of the significant relievers were home grown. While there have been a relative handful of very good trades interspersed which have been mentioned, player development had been their predominant pattern for decades - ever since I became an aware fan in the ‘70’s

The Arenado deal was not a deal made out of dire need or desperation. It was a splashy, headline making deal for a perennial playoff team intended to be the one piece that brought the Cardinals from a very good team to a World Series contender. They have continued to wheel and deal and have been in a slide ever since. I stand by my supposition that that deal marked a notable turning point within the organization. They broke what had been a very successful formula for a very long time.
