A Season of Change: McDonough Steps Down

Chicago Cubs team president John McDonough will be moving to the West Side and become the Blackhawks new man in charge. McDonough had been with the Cubs organization since 1983, although most Cubs fans hadn't heard of him until last year when he took over as team president from Andy MacPhail. According to our wonderful readers from various radio reports, Crane Kenney will step in to take over his Cubs duties. With ownership in limbo and McDonough supposedly not working with any contract, it's probably a smart move on his part as chances of him remaining with the club under new ownership were slim. Kenney was the guy that McDonough reported to as is, so it's doubtful this will change much of the Cubs offseason plans.

Rob, I have to disagree that most Cub fans hadn't heard of McDonough until last year. I'd be willing to bet he was the most well-known team Marketing Director in all of professional sports, partly because some of his innovations, e.g., the fan convention and the Beanie Baby giveaway (good call, Rory), got so much attention and partly because McDonough was never shy about going on the air and letting radio hosts shower him with compliments. (Dave Kaplan, who I normally love, is sickening with McDonough; Chet Coppock, who I normally despise, is almost as bad.) All in all, this is a bigger win for the Hawks than it is a loss for the Cubs. The idea that McDonough drove the Tower to up the payroll last off-season is preposterous. He was under-qualified for the President's job and was smart to get out before the new owner showed him the door. With the Blackhawks, he'll get to impact Marketing, which is what he knows.

Dr. Aaronb - "Hendry will saddle us with at least 3 more crippling, backloaded deals on his way out the door." Hendry has to offer backloaded deals...how else could we afford to sign potential starters, coming off of the DL, hoping to make a comeback...

oh for fuck's sake, Rollins wins the NL MVP 353 to 336 over Holliday. 5 more first place votes but Holliday had 11 more second place votes. Somebody thought Holliday was no better than 6th. I give up.... Rollins, Holliday, Fielder, Wright, Howard, Jones, Peavy, Utley, Pujols, Ramirez, Byrnes Soriano 12th (got a 3rd place vote), Ramirez 13th, Marmol got a 10th place vote

To get to the next level the Cubs need: a right fielder with fielding skills, a strong arm and some pop in his bat Get stronger up the middle with: a wide-ranging center fielder who can hit for average a shortstop with some power a catcher, if Soto turns out not to be "the one" Plus some pitching: one more quality SP a new closer Hendry's plan: Load up on marginal second basemen and let them "fight it out" for all those jobs

Any one else starting to think Andruw Jones is a possibility for the Cubs now? With Fukudome leaning towards the Yomunri Giants leaving us with a pile of free agent cash for an OF and Jones not having alot, if any suitors at the moment. Boras has said he will not look for a one year deal for Jones, but would that change if we threw 20 mil his way? If Hendry does have 30 mil to spend it still leaves him another to sign Wood and bench upgrades. Plus he could save cash by dumping Demp or Marquis. I would love our line-up of: Sori Theriot Lee Ram Jones Soto Dero Murton P

I would not love Andruw Jones. I'm sorry. I just don't think that posting 222/311/413 in a contract year in over 500 AB's can be dismissed as some odd quirk that magically fixes itself.

Jones would be great on a 1 year deal. He plays like hell to max his value. Cubs reap the rewards. Plus they get the Type A free agency compensation when he leaves to sign long term with Baltimore next year. Win/Win

I'd take Andruw on a one year deal, he won't hit 220 next year. If he just raises his BA to 250, his line goes up to 250/340/450 which is decent at least. Chances are I think he'll do even better than that...

    he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

    2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

    he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

    Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

    Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

    The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).
