Nwogu and Devers Lead South Bend Cubs to Victory at Fitch Park

Jordan Nwogu belted a solo HR and an RBI single (and stole a base) and SP Luis Devers fired four innings of two hit shutout ball with five strikeouts and 6/0 GO/AO, as the South Bend Cubs (Hi-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) took a 3-0 lead and then held-on to edge the Lansing Lugnuts (Oakland Athletics Hi-A affiliate) 3-2 on Field # 3, and Jack Winkler drilled an RBI single and a double, stole a base, and scored two runs, Jacob Wilson (2023 MLB #6 overall draft pick, A's 1st round pick, and A's #1 prospect) singled twice and scored two runs, Jeremy Eierman ripped an RBI triple and scored a run, Denzel Clarke (A's # 4 prospect) laced an RBI double, and 6'7 SP Joe Boyle (A's #10 prospect) hurled five innings of 98 MPH gas and one-hit shutout ball with six strikeouts, leading the Midland RockHounds (A's AA affiliate) to a 6-4 victory over the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA affiliate) on Field # 4, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Wednesday afternoon at the Lew Wolff Training Complex at Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ.

David Peralta served as an Extra Hitter for Tennessee and got four AB in the game on Field # 1 (he batted once in each of the first four innings), going 0-4 (E-6, F-8, 4-6-3 DP, and 4-3) with a stolen base.

Walker Powell was left behind in Mesa when the Iowa Cubs left town on Tuesday, and he got the start for AA Tennessee for what was supposed to be his final Spring Training tune-up. But he was hit very hard and threw only two innings and 34 pitches before being relieved, so I am not so sure that he will be leaving Arizona just yet...

Here are the abridged box scores from the games (Cubs players only):

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

The Reds trading Joe Boyle for Sam Moll at last year's MLB Trade Deadline was like the Phillies trading Ben Brown to the Cubs for David Robertson at the MLB TD in 2022.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

The level of conversation on this site is intelligent, reasoned and informative. Miles ahead of other Cub sites.

This was Jaxon Wiggins previous "live" BP on 4/5:

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING (20 pitches - 10 strikes)
one batted ball in play (F-9 by Stevens)
    one walk (B. Davis)
    one HBP (B. Davis)
two strikeouts (Peralta & Escobar - both looking)
    three swing & miss
    two fouls
    four called strikes
    nine called balls

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING:
    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play
two walks (Suriel and J. Diaz)
three strikeouts (Carico, Lubo, and Escobar - all three swinging)
    six swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    14 called balls
    one WP

    ETHAN ROBERTS
    ONE INNING
    15 pitches (7 strikes)
two batted balls in play (G-3 by Carico and L-9 by Suriel)
    two walks (Lubo and Carico)
    no strikeouts
    no swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    eight called balls
    one WP

Mat Peters was bumped by Justin Steele from his scheduled game work at Giants, so he threw two innings of "live" BP with Wiggins & Roberts.

    MAT PETERS
    TWO INNINGS
    44 pitches (23 strikes)
    five batted balls in play (F-7, L-7, F-7, G-6, G-3)
    three walks
two strikeouts (both Lubo and both looking)
    six swing & miss
    three fouls
    nine called strikes
    21 called balls
    three WP

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
