Friends around the campfire and everybody's high.<--break->CHC (77-43): RHP Kyle Hendricks (11-7, 2.19) 
COL (58-63): LHP Tyler Anderson (4-4, 3.42)
First pitch: 7:40pmCST

Hendricks pitched well enough to win but came away with a no-decision against the Cardinals on Saturday (7 IP, 2 ER, 12 K, 0 BB). He’s 2-0 with a 1.16 so far in August. In his two starts at Coors, Hendricks has given up 6 ER in 12.1, but the Cubs ended up winning both games. The Rockies are 24-69 (.348) against him. Gonzalez is 4-11 with a HR.

The rookie Anderson should be well rested. He’s had an extra day between starts, and his last one was abbreviated after he was ejected in a game in Philly for hitting Maikel Franco (3 IP, 4 ER, 2 K, 2 BB). None of the Cubs have faced him.

Montgomery (4-5, 2.43) backed up by Cahill, who pitched 5 scoreless against the Brewers for the win on Tuesday, versus that old stand-by TBD tomorrow at 7:10pmCST.

A couple of Cub notes, including that the defense is really good and deep. "Every position except first base has had at least two players start a dozen games. FanGraphs says nice things about Bryant (best player in the NL) and Contreras (good enough defensively to be a starting catcher) today.

yeah, this Rizzo vs Bryant MVP debate is cute and all until you look at fangraphs and it's not that close. The actual MVP debate is Seager vs. Bryant at this point. Slugging 1Bmen are still easy to find. Slugging LF, RF, 3B with great baserunning skills...not so much.

If Kershaw comes back in September and continues where he left off, he still may edge both of them (at least in fWAR).

i acknowledge this is not a criteria for MVP but if there is a big spot/high pressure at bat with a game on the line, out of anybody on the team, I want Rizzo at the plate. So fortunate to have Bryant and Rizzo on the team, both great players and high quality, class individuals

Anybody heard/seen anything on Papelbon? Given that the Cubs promoted 2 "mid-prospect" pitchers from Iowa, I assume they are not in on him.

Don't know if ya'll heard that Madden is resting Mr. 4-3 for the weekend. I am torn in that he is such a talented guy, and a defensive stud, but his bat has completely evaporated this season. Will be very interesting what will develop between now and October.

He'll be more of a part-time player the rest of the regular season, starting some games and off the bench for others, not because they're trying to hide him or limit his plate appearances, but because they need everyone in the clubhouse to know he won't be a starter in October. Teams like this don't come together very often, and they can't waste 15-25 plate appearances in a playoff series on a defense-first corner outfielder. He'll have to be a late-game substitution for his defense obviously. The job's still his next spring if he can keep it.

pretty sure he'll start vs. righties in the playoffs at the very least...The Cubs pitchers aren't this good on their own.

But I'm sure they'll pinch-hit him quickly and he'll be getting a lot of days off.

.265 BABIP or whatever (and his contract) says he'll certainly get a lot of rope next year to bounce back.

Jedd Gyroko is f'ing annoying Just tied up the game against the Phillies with a two run homer in the top of the ninth after fouling off a jazillion pitches. His 100th homer since July 1st (don't quote me on that) And Matheny is an ass-hat

hendricks gets through 6ip... 6ip 4h 1bb 3k, 1 r/er...the 1 run was on a leadoff HR to start the bottom 1st (cubs also lead off the 1st with a fowler HR). another killer performance. 2.16 era, 1.00 whip on the season.

Really a shame the Cubs haven't gotten him a couple more wins. The NL Cy Young is really up for grabs (unless Kershaw starts pitching regularly again). Giving up one run in 6IP in Colorado should get you a win. Ex-Kershaw, Kyle leads the league in ERA and is tied for 2nd in WHIP. Having just typed that, it's pretty freaking amazing. Hendricks has 11 wins -- of the top 10 ERAs, only Jake (15) has more than 13 wins.

This could be a rough trip -- Cubs don't seem to play well in Colorado, San Diego or LA. A 5-4 trip wouldn't be bad. Not sure if Grimm was an option -- but that's 4 games in 4 days for Chapman.

On the positive side, they broke in two new pitchers who looked impressive in late-and-close situations. Edwards pitched well. I'd like to see Baez get a shot at that smash to third by LeMahieu that Bryant missed. Don't remind me how the Rockies acquired LeMahieu. (Maybe the Cubs needed to write a charity donation off their taxes.) The eighth inning is too late for Travis Wood to be out there, even with a three-run lead and a short leash. Maybe the new guys will prevent that happening in the future. Zastryzny becomes the first pitcher selected in the June draft during the Jason McLeod era (2012-present) to take the mound for the Cubs. (There is also Zack Godley, who is in the Diamondback's rotation these days.) I thought it was great to see some budding talent (aside from Edwards, of course, who came in a trade) out there. Zastryzny is also the first player at any position since the 2012 draft to make an appearance with the Cubs who was selected lower than 6th overall--although I guess it's a tough roster to crack nowadays.

Sending Lemahieu away in a package for a shit sandwich is probably the second biggest mistake the Epstein crew has made so far, after the Edwin Jackson signing.That's sort of a complement one could pay to the Epstein crew--there could have been many more and worse mistakes. I'm not pining for Lemahieu to be the Cubs 2B (his D metrics are down this year, and he's not going to put up a .380 BABIP anywhere but Colorado), but it would've been nice to get something useful back for him.

I was thinking about Jackson just this morning and in one way it was a blessing in disguise. As you may remember, he was the backup plan after the Cubs missed on Anibal Sanchez, who is currently defiling the Tigers rotation with an almost 6 ERA. At least with Jackson his past performance was bad enough that the Cubs were able to wash their hands of him before 2016 even started.

    I think it’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario. Did they make these trades because they saw what was coming and weren’t impressed and knew to keep up with the demand for constant winning thru had to acquire impact players? Or did those additions cause a failure of resource allocation elsewhere.

    In addition, the whole they traded to acquire a star, that’s precisely what organizations should do if they feel they’re a piece away. Keep developing talent, but sometimes you need to supplement that talent. It’s what the best run organizations do. Atlanta does it. Houston in their prime run did it. Nationals during their prime run did it. Of course dodgers did it. Boston and Philadelphia too. Hell, the Cubs did it when they won. There’s no team that has had sustained success that has solely relied on their own internal development. It just doesn’t happen. I wouldn’t fault St Louis for that. What I suspect happened is in that 2020 season, in an effort to save money, they cut budget from developing and scouting. Or maybe the wrong guys got poached by other orgs. Regardless, blaming the acquisition of two of the best players of their generation for peanuts, seems off base to me.

    I do agree that we’ve more or less come to the same conclusion, but our paths to that conclusion contain almost no crossover. I think we can also agree that seeing the cardinals struggle brings a warmth to our hearts.
