Arrieta did what Arrieta does on Tuesday: 7 IP and 0 ER to beat the Pirates. He lost in SF last May (6 IP, 4 ER). The Giants are 5-21 (.238) against him. Pagan is 2-3, Pence is 2-4.

Peavy was on the shelf (back) for a good part of the start of the season but has been effective since his return, going 2-2 with a 2.84 in July. He had a no-decision against ATL his last time out (6 IP, 1 ER). The Cubs are 21-86 (.244) against him. Coghlan is 4-10, Montero is 6-23 (.261) with a HR.

Apropos of Nothing: 1. Cubs catcher David Ross says Jon Lester has developed a “frontdoor two-seamer” he did not have while with the Red Sox. “It’s been a great pitch for him,” Ross said. “He’s really pitching well. He’s been outstanding on and off the field as the leader of our staff. He’s pitched a lot better than the record [7-8] has indicated.” And when Lester pitches well, his throwing yips to first base don’t show up.

Did you pooh-pooh pitcher batting 8th? Interesting from Bleachernation: Meanwhile, Cubs No. 9 hitters are slashing .235/.291/.350/.640 this season. That slash line is better than what American League ninth-place hitters average (.224/.274/.326/.600) and is easily significantly better than what with the average NL nine-hitter is working with (.181/.225/.250/.475). Interesting to note that the .640 OPS posted by Cubs ninth-place hitters is better than 12 of 15 American League teams. seeing as there's stupid lineup magic involved in that lineup shift that mentally allows maddon to treat the 2 slot like a real hitter should be there, i can live with swapping the 2 worst hitting slots on the team at the end of the lineup. it's stung more than once with the 8/9 swap, but having the 1-2-3 in the lineup constructed like they currently are has most likely paid off way more than that 8/9 swap has hurt.

j.arrieta is gonna cost some serious loot pretty soon. he's an ace that baseball fans/media/etc on whole aren't treating like an ace (yet). 2016+2017 are locked in for the cubs without negotiating on contract length, though. phew.

Not only bases loaded no outs but last two batters with full counts and that last one with 3 or 4 fouls. My god Rondon earned that save today and wow that was an amazing sweep. Cubs bats were just relentless everytime the Giants came back.

Continuing the Almora Watch -- 2 more hits and a BB tonight. Last 5 games: 12 hits and 5 BBs. C'mon kid! Oh, and Wilson Contreras leads the Southern League in batting average and OBP, and is second in OPS. He has been raking all year -- wonder why he hasn't been moved up?

Except for "core" prospects, it's hard to advance in the organization mid-season any more. Iowa already has two catchers--Luke Carlin, age 34, and Taylor Teagarden, age 31--who have major-league experience and have to be ready for a call-up in an emergency. At Tennessee, Contreras can play every day. Maybe the Cubs will call him up in September. As a devoted minor-league box-score watcher, I don't recall seeing a Tennessee box score this year in which Contreras had a zero in the hit column. Looking at his last ten games, sure enough there have been 21 hits total, and no zeroes. He looks like the Cubs' best minor-league hitter right now, with Gleyber and Chesny Young in pursuit.

Dodgers led Pirates 5-3 in the 7th...Pirates scored 9 in the inning. Once that game is done, the top 3 NL records will be Cards, Pirates and Cubs. What a division....

    it's a "for cash considerations" trade.

    cooper is a 1st/DH only type, but that's practically a freebie for BOS.  i was expecting some AAA fodder gamble on the same level rather than cash.  he showed up decent in spring + his limited time with the cubs.

    given BOS's extreme need for a 1st, this is a steal for them.
