Hammel gave up 1 ER in 5 innings for a no-decision in Cinci on Tuesday. He hasn’t won a game since he beat Washington on June 6. He’s 0-2 with a 2.98 since then. In his 4 career starts against the Phills, he’s 1-2 with a 6.58 ERA. They are 9-34 (.265) against him. Francouer is 4-9 (.444). 

The 22y/o Nola lost (6 IP, 1 ER, 6 Ks, 1 BB) to Tampa Bay in his MLB debut last week. He went a combined 10-4 with a 2.39 ERA in the minor leagues. The LSU Tiger was the Phills first-round pick in the draft last year. He was the fourth first rounder from that class to play this year--after Finnegan, Rodon, and our man Schwarber.

maddon ordered the team not to take BP today, fwiw. get no-hit, cancel BP the next day. moneyballs. it's PHI...the cubs should win even if they showed up at the park after spending the morning golfing and drinking.

Not to nit-pick with the last sentence but . . . Wasn't Conforto of the Mets also selected in the first round last year and had a helluva a game for the Mets last night? Looking forward to seeing Nola, he was this armchair GM's choice for the Cubs last season. Glad they didn't listen to me. Still, a polished, middle of the rotation starter that would have filled a need wouldn't have been the end of the world.

Nola debued first. I changed "is" to "was" which accounts for Conforto--which I was too lazy to check on. Grammar is never nitpicky.

for a "weak-ish" draft class, there's not only been some quick trips to the majors, but a lot of the guys still in the minors are doing really well. going into the draft it was pretty much a given who the top-3 guys were and they went in picks 1-3. it was a toss-up after that. it could end up being one of the best draft classes in quite a while.

..until more terrible Phillie players score off of one of our top 3 starters. #7 & #8 hitters, and the pitcher, on the worst team on baseball. Truly remarkable. Given the opponent, pitching match ups (including Arrietta/Hamels) and where the Cubs were in the standings, this has the potential to be the worst home series in a long, long, loooong time. Imagine what you could have got in Vegas for betting a Phillies sweep. Meanwhile, the Pirates win against Scherzer and the Mets are beating Greinke. Hope Joe has more magicians on speed dial.

This underlines my comment post-game yesterday. They overachieved until this point. I hope they can at least finish around .500 by the end of the year. I suppose the silver lining is Theo will not be pressured to give up choice prospects for a rental player this year.

Rough weekend. Worst offense in the NL beats our 3 top starters. We can't beat Jerome Williams. Motte blows a save and our two All-Stars can't get the winning run in from second in the 9th to help him out. Hey, it happens. Who's up next? Oh, good! A last place team is coming to town....and they have scored 10 runs through 3 innings so far today. Cue the scary music. May be time for Joe to set a curfew for the kids -- Cubs are now 4 under in day games, +9 at night.

Actually, coming in to the weekend, things felt pretty good -- 8 games over, 4-3 road trip out of the break, great pitching match-ups against the Phils coming up, Schwarber!....then the tough loss Friday, get shut down by a good pitcher Saturday, and a throw-away game Sunday. And the Giants are on fire, which makes this weekend feel even worse. But, the Cubs have never been more than +9 vs. .500, now they are +5. Not that big of a swing. But, I agree -- other than Schwarber and Fowler, nobody is hitting much. On days that Ross catches, 6-9 in the lineup is pretty brutal. Early in the year, I think we were all surprised how much teams were pitching around Bryant and giving him nothing to hit. Now, they seem to be going after him more. It's as if he were a mythical figure that teams now realize is still a rookie with a huge uppercut. His BA and OBP have plummeted recently. Interesting race for NL Rookie of the year -- other than Pederson's 21 HR, nobody really has any eye-popping stats.

    Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).  

    Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.
