Rule 5 Draft

Happy Draft Day!

The first round of the MLB draft happens today. It will last at least twice as long as necessary. Good news for us Cubs fans is they have the #6 pick, so we can get the first pick over quickly. I believe they do go through the supplemental round though today and that's two more picks (#43 and #56) for the Cubs at the end of the evening.

The buzz for the Cubs centers around the 2 high school position players, Carlos Correa ("He's another A-Rod!!!) and Albert Almora ("the Cubs would take him even if they had the #1 pick"). Huzzah! The latest mock drafts from Baseball America and Baseball Prospectus both had the Cubs taking Almora for what it's worth.

Other names loosely linked to the Cubs are Florida catcher Mike Zunino and LH prep pitcher Max Fried.

You can watch the fun on MLB.com.

"Good news for us Cubs fans is they have the #6 pick, so we can get this over with quickly." no doubt. well, that wrapped up a little quicker than i thought. bud selig makes a less-than-2-minute speech. neat. this might happen in 30-45 minutes. everyone's on the clock for 5 minutes and i'm sure most (if not all) will stretch it out as long as possible for no other reason than "making TV."

Mariners take M. Zunino Jeff Clement retrospectives being filed.

K. Gausman to Orioles at #4. Appel must be thrilled with Boras right now.

are you high right now? If Appel is still demanding $6-$7M, it's possible the Cubs would have to pay a luxury tax and lose a draft pick and/or not have money for some draft picks they wanted later. That would be very, very dumb. None of this has anything to do with Concepcion.

are you high? gerado concepcion is a waste of money and a roster spot even if it's somehow "cheap" to give him $7m. whether they give a guy $5m or $8m in the 1st round it probably wouldnt make/break the team.

clever comeback "None of this has anything to do with Concepcion." you heard about the new CBA right? anyway, I'm done with you, there was a reason I've been skipping over your comments the last 4 months.

not really. you seem to support flushing money down the toilet as long as it's on a reasonable payment plan. i think anyone who would do something like giving g.concepcion the deal he got would get whoever the hell they wanted no matter what. it's moot anyway.

yup. doesn't necessarily make it a bad thing, especially if you have a good plan for going cheap later. some teams are more than willing to look deeper for a deal in following rounds if they can get the guy they want or fall to them. if everyone had to go cheap no one would draft appell...and what happens in this system when the next bryce harper shows up?

Keith Law says it's Almora. and Callis says it's Almora to Cubs and Fried to Padres.

Almora it is. Welcome new Cubbie! Don't suck. See everyone in 2 hours for the next Cubs picks. ~sigh~

He does have a Lou Montanez about him...weak draft, safe pick, etc. But he is a great defensive outfielder and has decent speed, so he does have that as a fallback if he doesn't hit in pro ball.

The Cubs draft Almora. I would have drafted that blonde in the blue dress (for those watching on mlb channel)

Interesting possible stellar top three for the Bucs with Gerrit Cole and Jameson Taillon, two previous high Pirate picks.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

one batted ball in play (F-9 by Stevens)
    one walk (B. Davis)

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    JAXON WIGGINS
    ONE INNING:
    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play
two walks (Suriel and J. Diaz)
three strikeouts (Carico, Lubo, and Escobar - all three swinging)
    six swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    14 called balls
    one WP

    ETHAN ROBERTS
    ONE INNING
    15 pitches (7 strikes)
two batted balls in play (G-3 by Carico and L-9 by Suriel)

    no strikeouts
    no swing & miss
    two fouls
    three called strikes
    eight called balls
    one WP

Mat Peters was bumped by Justin Steele from his scheduled game work at Giants, so he threw two innings of "live" BP with Wiggins & Roberts.

    MAT PETERS
    TWO INNINGS
    44 pitches (23 strikes)
    five batted balls in play (F-7, L-7, F-7, G-6, G-3)

    nine called strikes
    21 called balls
    three WP

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
