Sunday Gif Funnies: Only Dicks do the wave at Wrigley

So it's the 9th inning of an admittedly meaningless, end of the season game.
The 22-games-out Cubs are beating the 100-loss Houston Astros two to one.
This is nothing, right?
But if you actually paid money to get in the game, this is hopefully why you came:
Sean Marshall's on the mound with his wicked hook, the bases are loaded with Astros and there's only one out - it's all the baseball drama you could hope for.
But as Crunch pointed out yesterday, there in the background are Cub fans gleefully doing the wave.

At Wrigley Field.
The freaking wave
And all I could think was: what a buncha...well now you know where the idea for this cartoon gif came from.
It's not like Cub Fans need any help with the ditzy "they don't know about baseball" reputation.
And it's not like there are signs up around the park prohibiting it.
But the wave has been vehemently banned at Wrigley Field forever.
By fans.
Now, I am not saying you can't go have fun at the ballpark - I try to make that my business.
But for Harry's sake, man: can we please not see the wave at Wrigley again?
If only for the simple reason that even if the Cubs are terrible, I can take solace in the fans being cool enough to not. Do. The. Wave.
Okay?
If you absolutely feel like you have to dance at a baseball game, do that stupid YMCA thing.
But leave the wave at the door.
That's all.

Jesus, I need a Budweiser and a nice loud Gary Fencik helmet to helmet.

By the way, Marshall struck out Jose Altuve, and then got Humberto Quintero to ground out to Barney, and it was glorious baseball.

I apologize to all the Dicks I used in the illustration: Dick Nixon, Dick Allen, Dick Cheney, Dick Van Dyke, Dick Tracy, and Dick Jauron.
And I apologize for my obscene double entendre.
But not really.

Comments

awesome.

I saw it live, then read your comment.
I was compelled to stay up late after a movie to do the gif.
"My stupid brother", btw, is stupid.

I would only do the wave in a mocking exhibition of my contempt for anyone who would do the wave.

I wholeheartedly agree with the no wave thing. I was dumbfounded when going to Fenway for the first time and all they did was the wave from innings 3-6, and then did a sing along of Sweet Caroline. Whatever the worst guest 7th inning stretch singer the Cubs have ever had, it was still better than Neil effing Diamond. The "best" fans in baseball doing the wave repeatedly and singing Neil Diamond.

Castro SS, Campy RF, LaHair LF, Pena 1B, Byrd CF, DeWitt 2B, LeMahieu 3B, Hill C, Dempster P

...also from Carrie M's twitter yesterday

"Tourists back at Wrigley. They're doing the wave. Sit down."

...and george "give me your money and shut up" lucus and his army of fact checkers are deploying "Star Wars Day" upon Wrigley like they've done about a dozen other ballparks lately. hate this kinda stuff...

trying to earn his new deal...

officials playing for the Bears so far.

Drew Brees is good at football.

bees?!?!?

Still a little sketchy on how that hit when he speared our receiver in the chest with his helmet wasn't a 15 yarder. Officials were definitely sipping on the Saints Kool-Aid (Hurricanes?) before the game was over.

Football 101 says there are at least four tried & true ways to counteract the blitz:
1) run the football;
2) use the shotgun;
3) keep your tight ends in to block;
4) have your receivers break off routes

Mike Martz is the most stubborn man alive.

Actually, that is why Lovie and he are very well suited: stubborn as mules.

Asses.

lahair pregame interview...

he's seeing extensive work in the OF doing drills pre-game. the rest sounds like usual "safe topics/answers" interview stuff...

Castro #195

PENA!!!!

wow. hell of a 3 games so far.

play under review...bounced off the yellow line on the basket and back on the field...it's either a tie or a 1 run lead.

ruled a double...and castro placed at 3rd rather than scoring BECAUSE HIS ASS DIDN'T RUN...2 outs castro...run, don't watch.

wow.

cubs still down by 1...men at 2nd/3rd, 2 out.

...and quade ejected

and that's out 3...to the 9th. bleh.

rain delay?

ugg...this game and the past 10 minutes can lick my balls.

...and the cubs lose.

Dildos?

Two shitty running plays by Castro this week. Hey Starlin, when you swing at strike three that bounces 8 feet in front of home plate, go ahead and jog up to first.

While it is nearly inconcievable that Castro stopped running on Pena's almost HR, when reaching the bag at 3rd, the replay showed that the ump was signalling HR when Castro was between 2nd and 3rd.

Then, Castro slowed down and trotted. That isnwhy Quade got tossed.

But it makes one think, wtf was asshole 3rd base "De Crap-Ass" doing? Was he not screaming and waving him home yelling "RUN!"?

I guess not.

i just hate it when castro has to learn so many lessons on this level. we're in year 2 of it and it's still not pretty, though you can see he's got it in him to be a complete player.

Meh....he was running....the ump called it an HR...he slowed down.
This isn't a Cedeno over sliding the bag moment....I'd imagine a bunch of players would have done the exact same thing.

Indeed. That's how I saw it too.

Yeah, ump signals homerun, the play is over. If the ump calls you out at second you don't make the turn and go to third, and the third base coach doesn't wave you home.

Only 9 more games of Quade as manager.

I wouldn't be so sure...the Cubs historically have never been quick at firing managers merely for having a bad season.

Being that the Cubs are under new ownership and soon to be new management, how is the Cubs history at all relevant on this issue?

How long did it take them to fire Hendry? Hopefully Quade will be around just long enough to have Garza and Marshall shred their rotater cuffs in meaningless games.

Here's my question: If the same guy who didn't fire Quade at the same time as Hendry is now in the selection process to hire an 'Epstein-like' person to run the Cubs baseball operations, what is your confidence level (1 to 10) that he will make the correct hire?

I can see why they're separate decisions. Mostly the reason they didn't let Quade go was probably because they didn't want to have "interim" managers in back to back seasons.

Does it have to be 1 to 10? I'd put it as a 0.

Regardless, the next GM will fire Quade before he is introduced as the new GM.

I live for that day. I don't think I disliked Dusty or Lou as much as Q-less. What a disappointment he turned out to be.

By the way:

Very funny Flash animation, Tim. I did not see Chaney doing the wave, until closer look. Haha!

You gave VanDyke premium positioning, I see.

Its hard to hate him.

Took awhile to google-image all those Dicks.
Think I left about 5 out, including Tidrow.
Plus, there isn't a photo anywhere of Dick Pole.

I bet there are a lot of Google image items associated with the search term "Dick Pole" though.

Seriously, though, I'll never understand why someone with the last name "Pole" would go by "Dick" instead of "Richard." Once met a guy named "Dick Deuschel." Wondered the same thing about him.

That's fantastic!
Jesus,what a unique name.
I knew a kid in boyscouts named Happy Easter.
Actually, either it was the kid or his dad, can't remember.

via rotowurld...via mlb.com/marlins

"The Marlins will be big spenders over the winter, reports MLB.com's Joe Frisaro, and are expected to target Cubs third baseman Aramis Ramirez, amongst others."

along with the never-ending debate line...

"Ramirez has a mutual option of $16 million in 2012. If either side declines, he will become a free agent."

http://joefrisaro.mlblogs.com/2011/09/19/high...

I'll go out on a limb and say the Marlins won't draw new fans to the new ballpark. There might be a little increase to see the park at first, but then it will drop back to horrible numbers, regardless of how well the team plays. Look at Tampa, nobody goes to their games either. Florida is Siberia for MLB and both franchises need to move. Tampa is fighting for the playoffs once again this year and also fighting for the worst attendance in the majors.

When did Tampa get a new stadium?

I think Marlins will do well with retractable roof and cozy ball park.

And probably at least as important, the ability (desire) to hold on to some of their players and build some fan loyalty.

came back to win Game 3 with a 3-run rally in the 8th

http://web.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats...

but lost Game 4 with McNutt and Hatley getting beat up the worst and finish in 2nd place for the third straight year

http://www.minorleaguebaseball.com/milb/stats...

Ryno's Iron Pigs lost in 4 games too.

http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/prospect...

6. Marco Hernandez, ss/2b, Cubs
9. Gioskar Amaya, inf, Cubs

Clevenger and Dolis will be added to Cubs roster today

Sort of interested in Clevenger.

Dolis is just Justin Berg 2.0 to me - one pitch pitcher and that one pitch isn't that great. His numbers actually look beter as a starter.

http://www.csnchicago.com/09/19/11/Wilken-Cub...

no extension for Wilken (no one's come calling yet), but did meet with Ricketts and given the go-ahead to pursue business as usual.

His contract runs out after 2012.

Ninja would get a shot at the rotation, Marshall is too valuable in set-up role

I probably feel the opposite way. Marshall seems like the one that could possibly be a good starter, while Ninja managed to not fall of while walking a tightrope while juggling bowling pins all year.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball...

Right now Ninja may be the best garbage time reliever in the business. A guy who can give you a good two innings when you're starter implodes. He's invaluable on a team with a starting staff as horrible as the Cubs'.

Set up man? Don't make me laf. Only good teams need one. The Cubs don't need a setup man. They need some decent starting pitching. Give Marshall a shot before he leaves town in disgust.

marshall's stamina wall screws him.

dunno if it's still valid, but when he was starting he lost his stuff around pitch 80-100.

i imagine it's not gotten better, anyway.

it was frustrating to watch the guy cruise through 70+ pitches only to hit a wall.

Has Marshall started since living with Maddux?

He lived with Maddux? Isn't Marshall married? That would be an odd setup for a married millionaire.

So we're all rooting against the Red Sox right now, #1) because their fans are annoying and #2) if they don't make the playoffs, the interview with Epstein or his minions will happen faster?

So is Epstein more or less likely to come to the Cubs if the Red Sox don't make the playoffs?

not sure if it matters, maybe Red Sox are slightly more likely to grant permission or even let him go.

OK, I'm in.

mo going for the saves record right now.

and the greatest closer in history claims his record.

Tonites line up

Castro SS

Barney 2B

Ramirez 3B

Baker RF

Soriano LF

Byrd CF

Pena 1B

Soto C

Coleman P

When they retire do you think Baker and Quade will move into same apartment complex as Dusty and Neifi?

I hope the first trade of the new GM involves Jeff Baker. I NEVER EVER want to see him hitting cleanup again, let alone play more than twice a week.

me hatess quuaddee, sez golem.

of all the dumb shit Q-Ball does, this seems the least offensive

Baker has a career
.312/361/531 line versus lefties in 559 PA's with 22 HR's

for the year he's
325/355/482 (838, albeit with just 3 HR's)

presuming you keep Aramis in the #3 spot, that leaves Soto(909 OPS in 2011 vs. lefties) and Soriano (804 OPS vs. lefties).

  • BRADSBEARD: Javier Assad was still pitching into the 6th inning, and the first batter he faced reached base on an E-4 (that was Assad's 70th and final pitch of the game). Then Leathersich relieved Assad and retired the second batter 4-3 on the first pitch of the AB (the runner at 1st base advanced to 2nd on the play), and then on an 0-1 pitch the third batter in the inning (second one faced by Leathersich) lined into an inning-ending 6-4 DP (baserunner doubled off 2nd base). When calculating GO/AO, double plays and triple plays count as only one out.

  • Wow. The site actually loaded without an error! Happy 4th all, and Go Cubs!

  • OK -- my 4th of July resolution is to try to stay more positive. So -- 10 games to the AS break, meaning the Cubs will be in first place at the break! First time since...2008? Also, hopefully, Willson, KB and Javy learned something about Familia yesterday that they can use in the future.

  • Hmmm, my math might be fuzzy but if he retired 3 batters with 3 pitches, how did he get a 1/1 GO/AO ratio?

  • Pls DFA Peralta when Richard comes back. Richard 1 IP, O R, O ER, 0 BB, 2 Ks in first rehab appearance. We really need to trade for a LHRP.

  • "The Boston Red Sox were banned from signing any international players for the next year and had five of their teenage prospects declared free agents on Friday after a Major League Baseball investigation showed they circumvented signing-bonus rules last year, a source familiar with the situation told Yahoo Sports."

  • The thing with Heyward is its not just free agency. He is way under performing his career #s. He's making the same % of contact but his soft contact is much higher and hard contact much lower than all his previous years so there is something very specifically going on this year causing the issues. Chances are he will eventually get back to his previous #s and it's better to get the slump now and get that hot run later but I wish I knew what is different about this year. He's either just not seeing the ball as well or a swing change is causing it.

johann 7 hours 15 min ago view
  • Only 3 pitches for Leathersich. Not much of a rehab outing.

    Thanks for the reporting Phil.

QuietMan 7 hours 27 min ago view
  • He's the nastiest pitcher I've seen in awhile. I'm gonna give them all a mulligan on this one.

Coghlan's strike out was more disappointing. He was fighting off a lot of pitches and not swinging at crap, and on the last pitch, he swung at stuff he was laying off, and struck out.

And Heyward, too. I don't blame Heyward - I blame free agency. I hate it. You almost never get a valid return on the investment.

I look forward to the day when ball players own the teams. The current economics are not sustainable.

Old and Blue 8 hours 28 min ago view
  • Oh, I'm sure you're right. He's not 27-27 in saves for nothing. But, man, I hope they learned last night that he didn't throw a single pitch in the zone to KB, Contreras or Baez, and they all just kept swinging.

billybucks 10 hours 36 min ago view
  • Sounds like a much better game than last night's fiasco in Flushing.

Old and Blue 10 hours 53 min ago view
  • I'm pretty sure it looks like a sweet pitch on the way in. How many sinkers like that are there at 98 mph? I agree that they should just do a Lackey and stand their with their bat on their shoulders until he throws a strike next time, but I can see how that's hard to do.

The bullpen, on the other hand, is a mess, and Heyward is starting to piss me off.

Old and Blue 10 hours 54 min ago view
  • I noticed that too. He's getting to everything, but when he gets right under it on a high flyball he looks uncomfortable

  • Did you expect anything different?

billybucks 19 hours 58 min ago view
  • Wow, did they blow this game. Stupid plays by the kids in the 7th -- Almora throwing to 3rd instead of 2nd to keep the DP in order (when a DP probably wins the game) and Baez throwing to 3rd (to a backpedalling KB) instead of getting the easy 2nd out at first - cost them the game. Also, Contreras almost throws the ball into RF on a nonexistent pick-off play. And Maddon, for using Peralta in the first place. Did they do a bunch of shots in the dugout before the 7th? Unbelievably bad baseball. I thought Almora had a high baseball IQ?
