Hector Neris Stops By for a Brief Visit on the Riverview Backfields

Cubs 2018 3rd round draft pick Jimmy Herron (traded to Colorado for International Signing Bonus Pool space in July 2019) drilled a two-run HR, Hunter Goodman (Rockies # 12 prospect) belted a solo HR and doubled and scored, and SP Andrew Quezada tossed four innings of one hit shutout ball, leading the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA affiliate of the Colorado Rockies) to an 8-5 victory over the Iowa Cubs (AAA affiliate of the Chicago Cubs) on Field # 6, and Yanquiel Fernandez (Rockies # 3 prospect) slugged a towering two-run HR off the top of the RF "foul pole," Adael Amador (Rockies # 1 prospect) singled twice, stole two bases, and scored two runs, and SP Mason Albright (Rockies # 22 prospect) hurled four innings of no run / one hit ball and combined with four relievers on a five-hit shutout, as the Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies AA affiliate) blanked the Tennessee Smokies (Cubs AA affiliate) 4-0 on Field # 5, in Cactus League Minor League Spring Training game action Thursday afternoon at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Matt Mervis mashed a three-run HR for the Iowa Cubs on Field # 6.

Cubs RHRP Hector Neris got the start in the AA game on Field # 5, facing just three batters and throwing only 11 pitches, as he was tasked with working in a game on back-to-back days, something he will presumably will do many times in 2024. (Neris threw an inning versus the Oakland Athletics Wednesday afternoon in an MLB Cactus League game at HoHoKam Park). So it wasn't so much about how many batters he faced or how many pitches he threw, it was just a matter of getting on the mound in a game two days in a row.

Here are the abridged box scores from the games (Cubs players only):

Cubs AAA and AA played the Rockies AAA and AA in Mesa, Cubs Hi-A and Lo-A played the Rockies Hi-A and Lo-A on the backfields at Salt River Fields, and the Chicago Cubs played the Colorado Rockies in the MLB Cactus League game in the stadium at Salt River Fields at Talking Stick, so the Cubs and Rockies certainly saw a lot of each other "top-to-bottom" today!

Cubs 2018 2nd round pick OF Cole Roederer with the game-winning three-run HR in the top of the 9th for the Cubs in the MLB game at SRF.

Roederer was promoted from the AA Tennessee squad to the AAA Iowa squad at Minor League Camp yesterday, replacing Brennen Davis. (Upward movement at Minor League Camp -- especially at this stage of Spring Training -- is very rare).

Also, Roederer is eligible to be a minor league 6YFA post-2024, and some people may be surprised to learn that despite his slow climb through the Cubs organization pipeline, he is still considered to be an actual prospect by scouts.

Besides Roederer, other notable Cubs minor leaguers eligible to be minor league 6YFA post-2024 (if not added to the 40) are Cam Sanders, Pablo Aliendo, Kohl Franklin, Riley Thompson, Jake Slaughter, Eduarniel Nunez, Ezequiel Pagan, and Luis Devers.

I think it’s a bit of a chicken or egg scenario. Did they make these trades because they saw what was coming and weren’t impressed and knew to keep up with the demand for constant winning thru had to acquire impact players? Or did those additions cause a failure of resource allocation elsewhere.

In addition, the whole they traded to acquire a star, that’s precisely what organizations should do if they feel they’re a piece away. Keep developing talent, but sometimes you need to supplement that talent. It’s what the best run organizations do. Atlanta does it. Houston in their prime run did it. Nationals during their prime run did it. Of course dodgers did it. Boston and Philadelphia too. Hell, the Cubs did it when they won. There’s no team that has had sustained success that has solely relied on their own internal development. It just doesn’t happen. I wouldn’t fault St Louis for that. What I suspect happened is in that 2020 season, in an effort to save money, they cut budget from developing and scouting. Or maybe the wrong guys got poached by other orgs. Regardless, blaming the acquisition of two of the best players of their generation for peanuts, seems off base to me.

I do agree that we’ve more or less come to the same conclusion, but our paths to that conclusion contain almost no crossover. I think we can also agree that seeing the cardinals struggle brings a warmth to our hearts.

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?
