Former Cubs Players

Ol' Times with Ronny Cedeno / Game #78 Preview

I watched the game intermittently last night, and one of my tune-ins happened in the top of the 7th. The Cubs were leading 3-1 but Pedro Alvarez had connected for a one-out single and then Ryan Doumit ripped a 3-1 pitch into the leftfield corner for a double that moved Alvarez to third. The visitors had the tying runs on base with just one out and roughly 100 pitches into the evening, Ted Lilly looked like he might be out of gas. Len Kasper surmised that this was probably the game's defining moment.

Then Ronny Cedeno stepped into the batter's box.

Ex-Cub Watch

A quick tour of some of the Cubs that have been recently vanquished by Jim Hendry and the Hendry-nots

Michael Wuertz -  He entered today with 7 scoreless innings, no walks and 9 K's plus a win and a hold. He was called upon today in a tie game with a runner on versus the Yanks and the runner got caught stealing but Wuertz's scoreless streak came to an end with back-to-back doubles followed by back-to-back singles to give the Yanks a two-run lead which the A's subsequently erased to get Wuertz off the hook for the loss.

Felix Pie - Playing left fied mostly for the Orioles with a few stints in center...he's sporting a 135/220/216 line so far with a a home run and 11 K's versus 4 BB's in 42 PA's.

Rich Hill -  Expected to begin a rehab assignment later this week that should last the full 30 days.

Luis Montanez - Just got called up by the Orioles to replace the DL'd Ryan Freel. Montanez had a 29-game streak of reaching base in the minors dating back to last year and an OPS at 1.000 so far this season. He went 1-for-5 with a double and a strikeout in his first game back.

Looking In On Corey Patterson

Former Cub Corey Patterson has come a long way, and not in the direction any player wants to see his career go. Since the Cubs traded Patterson to Baltimore in January, 2006, he's had seasons of .276 and .269, with OPS+ numbers of 94 and 80, OBPs of .314 and .304, and a combined 159 strikeouts and 42 walks. On Friday, Baseball Prospectus (subscription) pointed out that as recently as 2000, Baseball America had this to say about Eric

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.
