In addition to the two games played between the Cubs and Giants minor leaguers on Fields 5 & 6 today, another squad of Cubs minor leaguers (mostly the players who will likely be left behind at Extended Spring Training) played Asian Breeze, the independent Japanese team that signed Trevor Bauer. The game was played on Field # 4 simultaneous with the other two games. Bauer did not pitch in the game (he last pitched at the Dodgers minor league camp last weekend, so he might pitch against the A's EXST group at Fitch Park tomorrow).

it's worth saying no scouts attended bauer's pitching performance vs the dodgers minor leaguers.

all the sex stuff aside, people need to remember he was traded twice during his career for less than he was worth solely because not only was he a guy with a toxic ego, he was spreading that toxicity to his teammates.  both ARZ and CLE traded him for less than his talent was valued...the CLE trade involved a toxic-for-toxic swap involving yasiel puig.

Scouting someone like Bauer is a waste of time because, among other reasons, trying to bring him back would be a PR nightmare. If you look at Addison Russell’s foreign league numbers and the fact he’s still only 30 he would certainly deserve another shot at the majors. But it would represent a media circus and huge public relations issues.

Players like this might not even WANT to come back. Being able to make decent, if not MLB money outside of the glare of the American media spotlight probably isn’t such a bad deal for these guys.

CRUNCH: I wasn't at the Asian Breeze game at Dodgers camp last weekend, but if "no scouts attended" that would be scouting malpractice. The scouts I know want to see EVERYTHING AND EVERYBODY and leave no stone left unturned, even if it was just to observe the Dodgers minor leaguers who were hitting against Bauer (unless for some reason scouts weren't allowed into the facility to see the game).

it was reported by The Athletic that no MLB scouts were in attendance for his performance.

i gotta imagine someone with the dodgers was paying attention to how their minor leaguers were faring vs a former cy young winner who still has stuff in his arm even if it wasn't a known MLB scout, though.

bauer is publicly offering his services for league minimum.  it's not the money keeping him from a contract.  he just wants his foot in the door again.

at this point i honestly believe the problem is him, not the public allegations that got dismissed or some of the other accusers that never materialized in charges.  it has to play a role in public perception and is the end of the line for some teams, but it's icing on the cake that is bauer.

even last year in japan it got to the point a teammate had to publicly call him out on Twitter for being disrespectful.  it's like he never learns.  dude is in his 30s and he's still the self-absorbed guy he was as a 21 year old in ARZ...his only year in ARZ after pissing off everyone he could and getting traded well below his value.

once social media became a thing beyond posting stuff on MySpace or Facebook, things only got worse for exposing his way of doing things beyond the clubhouse and field.  you can't contain the jerk-ass stuff from the public at large when he's out there showing his ass on every piece of media he can access.

i dunno if that's possible.  last year when he wasn't screaming at teammates over errors or storming off into the clubhouse to rage, he spent months trying to get the internet to have his "sword celebration" go viral in various social media posts and videos.  this is something he's been trying to go viral since his dodgers days.  he's really dedicated to it becoming a "thing."

the fans mostly liked him, but he is...a bit tiring.

there's a lot of non-baseball going on while he insists that everyone on the field with him be 100% dedicated to making his baseball performance look good.

his rage tantrums mixed with "hey, chill out, dudes" goes 1-way depending on which way benefits bauer.

Brewers closer Devin Williams out 3 months with two stress fractures in his back. Ouch. Joel Payamps is the next man up.

dodgers renew the contract of andrew toles ($0) so he can continue to have full insurance.  he's officially on the restricted list.

the dodgers have been taking care of this small part of his life for years and it's great they're still doing it.

Ian Happ is taking "live" BP right now on Field # 6, facing LHP Blake Weiman (so he is batting RH).

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?
