Non-Cubs Game Open Thread

Since the Cubs are snowed out, what say we congregate in Parachat and discuss the game airing on ESPN 2? Seattle's much-hyped pitching phenom Felix Hernandez faces the Red Sox, tonight. His counterpart on the Sox seems to be garnering a fair bit of attention, too. - update - King Felix has an Interesting Statistical Event going, through 7 IP.  come join us.

Comments

And he's starting for my roto team today. 5 BBs in a row, ended only by a HBP and an exit from the game.

King Felix stealing the Dice-K thunder...no hits through seven and looking absolutely nasty. They just mentioned on the broadcast that he's faced 50+ hitters this season and only four balls have reached the outfield.

And of course JD Drew takes the first pitch of the 8th up the middle for single. If only I could use my powers for good.

I love the euphemism, Transmission! What I find funny is that, of Seattle's 2 guys that have faced Dice before, the ballyhooed one went something like 0-3 on him and Johjima had 2 doubles.

Wasn't around my computer, but I watched every pitch of the Dice-K vs. King Felix bout. What a performance by the kid. I think it was during the 4th or 5th when I thought "This kid really can be un-hittable." That 1-to-5 slurve and 92-mph slider are just sick.

Cubs content: So, I looked at the standings today for the first time and whoa, wouldn't you know it--the Cubs are in last. And the Cards are in first. Yeah, I know it's only the second week.

And what do you know.. after the Cards got swept by the Mets, everybody said they were toast. Kinda like...I dunno... everybody says the Cubs are. The Cards still are not hitting, but they're pitching has been stupid good. That staff will come back out of the stratosphere if you just wait around a while. The Kip Wells experiment is bound to end up with an ERA in the high 4 area. He had those two nice years in Pittsburgh in 03 & 04 (3.58 & 3.28 respecitvely) but since, he's been north of 4 and a half every year. Braden Looper has never even thrown 100 innings in a single season, let alone 200. I have serious doubts about him once he hits late July. He's a walking recipe for dead arm. Nobody knows how long Carpenter is gone. 2 weeks is a best case. I think Cubster said 6-8 is a possibility. Throw in the question marks down in the bullpen and you've just rolled a Triple Yahtzee! There's no way their pitching stays good. Perhaps a product of the cold weather a little bit. Hard telling. The hitting might get a little better, but in the long run, it's going to have to get a lot better to overcome that staff. Strong now.. sure. Be patient. It'll come back around.

Good Gawd! FELIX PIE has scored 11 Runs in 22 AB's!!! The man has 10 hits and has scored 11 runs.....

And he still has no chance in hell of being on the Cubs in 2007. He is neither needed nor wanted.

"And he still has no chance in hell of being on the Cubs in 2007. He is neither needed nor wanted. " Finally, somebody here being honest. Cub Fan, my ass!@

GACK@! Mitch Atkins was pitching no hit baseball through four innings tonight for Daytona and then IT HAPPENED: Vero Beach Bottom 5th * Sergio Pedroza walks. * Patrick Cottrell hit by pitch. Sergio Pedroza to 2nd. * Christopher Cunningham hits a sacrifice bunt. Throwing error by pitcher Mitch Atkins. Sergio Pedroza scores. Patrick Cottrell to 3rd. Christopher Cunningham to 1st. * Christian Lopez singles on a ground ball to left fielder Jesus Valdez. Patrick Cottrell scores. Christopher Cunningham to 2nd. * Matthew Devins hits a sacrifice bunt. Fielding error by pitcher Mitch Atkins. Christopher Cunningham to 3rd. Christian Lopez to 2nd. Matthew Devins to 1st. * Hunter Vick strikes out swinging. * Jackson Brennan hits a grand slam (1) to left center field. Christopher Cunningham scores. Christian Lopez scores. Matthew Devins scores. * Pitcher Change: Scott Koerber replaces Mitch Atkins. 6 runs (1 earned, although Atkins made all the errors) on 2 hits and a walk plus 2 errors and a hit batter.

The big thing about Pie so far is he has only 2 K's in 22 AB's. If he can keep his ab/k ratio above 8 and and pair it with a .200+ Iso SLG for a month, I would officially give him my blessing as ready.

That's a nice start for the youngster. But again, you don't seem to understand a small sample size. Call me at 150 AB's. We'll see if he's still got an OPS over 1.200 then.

"MikeC — April 11, 2007 @ 11:42 pm And he still has no chance in hell of being on the Cubs in 2007. He is neither needed nor wanted." Not trying to go all exact words on you, but I will bet you anything that your statement is wrong. I will bet September 1st, Felix Pie will be on the big club. If not before that. The first DL stint for Floyd or any other outfielder (please not Soriano) he'll get a call up. But if you mean that he won't be with the big club permanently, I will agree.

pie's on the hot seat and probably the #1 guy to be brought up for any OF'r injury (unless hendry gets another case of buck coats fever). he's far from needed, though...club already has issues carrying 2 LF'rs who could be full-time starters...but its hard to complain cuz its a rare luxury to be able to keep one of those guys on the bench for use later. the only thing holding him back is the 25-man roster and the extra LF'r...but that's what sent pagan out of town and made theriot a RF'r too, it seems. supposedly there was word about giving murton time there, but i dunno what's gonna become of that.

Does anyone else fear when any ball is hit into left while Floyd is out there? I just assume that he won't catch any ball due to how slow he is.

re Ryan Harvey, April 10th Inside the Ivy:
A possible return to Class-A Daytona also seems unlikely for Fuld since Cubs outfield prospect Ryan Harvey is expected to head back to the Florida State League for a second stint there once he recovers from a hamstring injury.
I think he's still in AZ.

Steve:
Does anyone else fear when any ball is hit into left while Floyd is out there? I just assume that he won’t catch any ball due to how slow he is.
I can live with that. The Reds, Giants, and even the Cards live with it when Duncan is playing LF.

Maybe the Cubs should have KEPT JOSH HAMILTON????? Imagine, Soriano, Pie, & Hamilton roaming the outfield for the next 7 years - Damn Hendry Really sucks - he fails to put together a cohesive defensive team year in and year out. While never addressing the need for all the elements a WS team needs, ie: Left Handed Batters mixed with righties, speed, litle ball and defense.

*The Kip Wells experiment is bound to end up with an ERA in the high 4 area. He had those two nice years in Pittsburgh in 03 & 04 (3.58 & 3.28 respecitvely) but since, he’s been north of 4 and a half every year. Nobody knows how long Carpenter is gone. 2 weeks is a best case. I think Cubster said 6-8 is a possibility. Throw in the question marks down in the bullpen and you’ve just rolled a Triple Yahtzee!* Seems to me the Cards won the World Series last year with a team that had just as many question marks. Between Roid-holes and the greaseball, they'll do just fine this year, too.

no, No. I disagree. The rotation for them at this time last year had considerably fewer issues than they do right now. Guys got hurt, sure. And then things went downhill with Marquis and having to throw Weaver in there. But that was later. Everybody picked them to the divison and they did. There weren't very many question marks there. At that time, the Cards and the Mets were just abou everybody's picks to win the pennant. That actually happened. I'm not exactly sure who you are referring to when you refer to the "greaseball". I'm assuming Carpenter. He doesn't help you much on the shelf. If he's on the shelf for some time, they're really in trouble.

At the time the Cubs had Josh Hamilton, he was in the throes of drug addiction. Not much a team can do with that. The Reds have Narron's brother baby-sitting him almost full time. That tells you this guy could go off the rails any time. Look at Gooden, Strawberry and Howe. The team has to decide if a player is worth all the extra turmoil for his potential output. Hamilton is still shaky mentally.

"Mitch Atkins was pitching no hit baseball through four innings..." Four innings is not even half of the requisite 9. I don't get it. Why is this a big deal to you? 12 batters in a row were retired. And....? So he gets shelled. Like this has never happened before at this level (or any other)?

re: the redbirds...damn larussa can do no wrong [@ the ballpark] - night before last he pinches a guy w/ food poisoning in the ninth and he knocks in two to send it to extras-they win in ten-and last night he pinches for a guy having a perfect night-taguchi-and rolls a game-winning homer w/ duncan!

At the time the Cubs had Josh Hamilton, he was in the throes of drug addiction. What? The Cubs drafted Hamilton this off season in the Rule 5 draft, and then immediately traded him to the Reds. He has been sober for 18 months. As has been pointed out numerous times, Hamilton was never on the Cubs radar. They drafted him with the sole purpose of trading him to the reds.

So he gets shelled. Like this has never happened before at this level (or any other)? Again, excuse me for mentioning something of interest to CUB FANS with an IQ above a hotdog on this blog. I know you think this isn't the right place. And, Atkins did NOT get shelled. He managed to give up 6 runs on 2 hits and a walk--- which is pretty amazing in and of itself.

"Again, excuse me for mentioning something of interest to CUB FANS..." Yes you certainly are a great CUBS FAN and Florida Marlins FAN. There certainly was terrific interest in your terrifically researched information you shared with us. Now, I am sure most of the FANS with a high IQ herein feel much more enlightened with your great observations and sharing of useless and meaningless information. Now you may bag the groceries for the next customer.

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!

Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!

That’s just kinda how it works though, for every team. No team plays their best guys all the time. No team is comprising of their best 26 even removing injuries.

When baseball became a business, like REALLY a business, it became important to keep some of the vets happy, which in turn keeps agents happy and keeps the team with a good reputation among players and agents. No one wants to play for a team that has a bad reputation in the same way no one wants to work for a company that has a bad rep.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate it too. But there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

On that topic, I find it silly the Cubs brought up Canario to sit as much as he has. He’s going to get Velazquez’d, and it’s a shame.

Of course, McKinstry runs circles around $25 million man Javier Baez on that Tigers team. Guess who gets more playing time?

    But I digress…

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Seems like Jed was trying to corner the market on mediocre infielders with last names starting with "M" in acquiring Madrigal, Mastroboney and Zach McKinstry.

At least he hasn't given any of them a Bote-esque extension.

  • Childersb3 (view)

    AZ Phil:
Rookie ball (ACL) starts on May 4th. Do yo think Ramon and Rosario (maybe Delgado) stay in Mesa for the month of May, then go to MB if all goes "solid"?

  • crunch (view)

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.
