Invitation

This has been a wretched excuse of a year. To celebrate our release from suffering on October 1st, I invite everyone to ring out the year in style, in Parachat. Let's fill the chatroom for the Sunday Oct. 1, 1:20 pm game against the Rockies, and toast the end to another fruitless season. Come in costume, come naked, come drunk, or with the lucid sobreity of a fan who has seen it all and wishes to see no more. Tell the bouncer at the door that you're a Friend of Trans, and he'll be sure to let you in. He'll ask you to check your sour mood at the door, but otherwise, anything goes!

Obviously, I haven't been around much, as I try to make a name for myself as a Responsible Professional Adult. (how boring.) But I hope to see you there.

exactly.

#1 of 2: By Transmission (September 27, 2006 01:20 PM) Obviously, I haven't been around much, as I try to make a name for myself as a Responsible Professional Adult. (how boring.) - Trans ain't gonna toot his own horn, but the reason he hasn't been around here too much lately is because he is now Dr. Transmission. And let me tell you, he does great work. I give him my highest recommendation. I got a complete rebuild, and now the vet runs great in all five speeds.

i saw him and adam dunn walking on water just the other day...i have blurry photographic proof.

Dr. Trans gets paid a lot more, for impersonating a Responsible Professional Adult. He's not sure that it's a very good impersonation, but so far, no one's caught on..... Glad to be of service, Phil

I will be coming as Rubby Perez, the better baseball player in the Perez family.

I'll be visiting Yankee Stadium for the first time (as well as NYC for that matter), but I'm sure you'll understand that it would make my day to let it all out and put it all behind me. Send my best wishes to the league's odds-on favorites for World Series MVP - Todd Walker, Phil Nevin and Neifi Perez. See you when the playoffs start. Will the Cardinals just be getting home like me? (That one sure feels good.)

I hope to make it, the Bears are on at night that's a big help. But with that knowledge my wife expects me to spend some quality time with her and the kids. Does anyone know any pumpkin patches with WIFI?

jacos: Does anyone know any pumpkin patches with WIFI? lol She just can't wait until the off-season? I vote you divorce her, but that's just me. :)

#10: Gotta stick around to make sure the kids don't grow up to be Sox fans or worse.

Worse? Than Sox Fans? My imagination fails.

They could split their loyalties between the Cardinals and Sox. Or not like baseball at all.

Can't make the chat, but I'll Tivo the game - strange things happen on the last day of the season. The Sosa departure flap, for example. And didn't Arne Harris pass away the night before the last game? I want to see if they can Baker before the game or wait till Monday.

What's Parachat?

John Boccabella: Worse? Than Sox Fans? My imagination fails. Atlanta Braves fans?

http://tinyurl.com/k2tgc Rusch is going to be on blood thinning medication for at least 6 months, possibly 12. He cannot play while he's on the medication. He's contemplating retirement as in his case it's been determined the clot is genetic.

http://tinyurl.com/h4pu3 Baker wants to know how much stuff he needs to move back to San Fran. No meeting set between him and Hendry so far. Speculation on Girardi, Ron Washington, Dave Righetti and Bud Black as possible successors.

oh god oh god PLEASE let it be Ron Washington, that would make me happy. Hell, I'd take any of the other three, as well, and call it a success.

"No meeting set between him and Hendry so far" Any thoughts, as incredibly stupid as they be, that Hendry might offer Dusty a "special assistant's job" or "consultant"?

You need an assistant to help you do nothing? I think Hendry pretty much has that covered on his own.

Jacos: "Any thoughts, as incredibly stupid as they be, that Hendry might offer Dusty a "special assistant's job" or "consultant"?" I am sure Baker wants to manage, not be a consultant. I think he will be talked about as a replacement for most openings this year and it would not surprise me at all if he is managing again by Opening Day somewhere. But I see no reason why Hendry would do that. But to me honest, I am a bit surprised Hendry has not even talked to Baker about a meeting or anything. Baker has made these similar type comments the last few days.

"But to me honest, I am a bit surprised Hendry has not even talked to Baker about a meeting or anything." -- I'm not surprised. Hendry is probably heartbroken that he has to end his love affair with Dusty (if he does indeed have to) and doesn't want to break it to him. Maybe Hendry will decide he doesn't want to go on without Dusty and resign.

Trib- Phil Rogers- "Where was MacPhail to help him defuse the Baker-Steve Stone mess down the stretch in 2004?" Rogers is alluding to what I thought, that McFail is the master puppeteer and Hendry his fat puppet. If Hendry is only to make deals with cost slashing teams and then needs to ask Andy-Dad to get more money to get Furcal and free agents, 2007 is going to be brutal. McFail needs to go.

I'm looking for the security video tape on Monday with Dusty locking Darin in his car seat and leaving in the first inning.

if rusch is forced into retirement for a medical reason, are the cubs liable for his salary? or, is there some sort of insurance carried against these sorts of situations? and are we sure that this post is not actually john hill wearing his dr. transmission costume???

"and are we sure that this post is not actually john hill wearing his dr. transmission costume" Let's check- Trans, when the Cubs are on the field with their mitts and gloves on they are playing_________ (fill in the blank)

if rusch is "nice" he'll just retire...no more money exchanges hands. more likely is a comprimise that will include a "buyout" where he walks with a little money. most likely is he goes on the "special" DL (say hello to jeff bagwell for us) and he collects a check while sipping on his special 12oz. blood thinners on his couch at home.

Re #29 "and are we sure that this post is not actually john hill wearing his dr. transmission costume" Let's check- Trans, when the Cubs are on the field with their mitts and gloves on they are playing_________ (fill in the blank) _______________________________________________ I believe the correct answer is "poorly"

DC, I can say with some certainty that all teams have insurance for players health.

CIN doesnt believe in insurance...not sure, but i think WAS doesnt do insurance either.

reds dont do insurance lately, that should be. dunno about the new regime, but since the griffey jr. struggles and bitching with insurance companies they swore it off. pissing contest over "90 days"... reds used to insure almost everyone they had signed for more than a year.

insurance is some interesting crap. pitchers are VERY expensive to insure...they're considered more of a risk than football players when it comes to what's paid out in premiums. guys like albert belle caused a lotta companies to drop insurance alltogether or shoot premiums through the roof. small time teams like CLE rarely hand out insurance, esp. for pitchers (they didnt insure sabitha cuz of the cost). even big time teams have problems with insurance when it comes to older guys with past injury problems. there's only like 2 companies left even offering insurance (and a few underwriters doing limited injury insurance)...Ace and some other company I cant remember.

Does it matter how much the Cubs pay Rusch? Pay him the whole contract to pitch batting practice next year. mannytrillo: But to me honest, I am a bit surprised Hendry has not even talked to Baker about a meeting or anything. Baker has made these similar type comments the last few days. I think it is possible that Hendry doesn't know what he's going to do yet about Dusty. The Pierre & Ramirez negotiations may have something to do with it. Pierre has already said that Dusty was the best manager he's played for (compared to who, McKeon? :) ) and Dusty's status will "weigh in on" his decision to come back.

#25: "Where was MacPhail to help him defuse the Baker-Steve Stone mess down the stretch in 2004?" This is probably as critical as we'll see the Tribune get, which is interesting, but I disagree with what Rogers seems to be saying with this and other similar comments. Rogers retroactively pines for MacPhail to have swooped in and reversed every bad decision Hendry made, and he proposes that the reason that didn't happen was because MacPhail was distracted or busy. I don't have the benefit of covering these people or interacting with them, but my guess is that even if MacPhail had nothing else to do but watch the leaves turn pretty colors, he wouldn't have prevented (or been able to prevent) the mess we have now. I particularly dispute the contention that the dithering over Baker led to 2006 being perceived as a "must-win" season rather than a "building" season. As Rogers in his standard flip-flop at the end of the article, most recent Cubs management regimes treat every season as a "must-win" season, and if they understand how to have a "building" season, they haven't shown it yet. Each management team seems to believe, with some justification I guess, that people in this town would have their hides if they didn't make at least a show of trying to win it all every year, to end the drought. (I am not in sympathy with the hide-having people, just saying management is probably accurate in thinking that they exist.) Hence the crummy player development; who's got time?

Ryno: "I think it is possible that Hendry doesn't know what he's going to do yet about Dusty." You really think so? I can't believe he needed the 2nd half to make a final decision. Either you want him to be the manager or not. If Baker hadn't seemed so unsure what was going on, I would almost think that they were working on an extenstion (thus no official set meeting after the season), but that does not seem to be the case or why would Baker keep asking a meeting. Whatever the case may be, as a Cub fan, I hope the manager situation is decided real quick, so Hendry can focus on the much bigger player personel problems (ARam, Pierre/leadoff/CF, getting some pitching, adding a big bat, etc.).

Ryno: "Pierre has already said that Dusty was the best manager he's played for (compared to who, McKeon? :)" Pierre played for Buddy Bell and Clint Hurdle in Colorado. And he played for Jeff Torborg and Jack McKeon in Florida.

wasn't there a big hub-bub during the last CBA that insurance companies wouldn't insure past 3 yrs of a contract anymore? I'm sure Rusch's contract is insured for next year ($3.25 mil) and somehow Rusch is going to get most of that.

I refuse to answer the question, on the grounds I might incriminate myself.

I think the best things about this season have been the Parachat sessions. Blackened Womack, the "Murton game", yeehaw, Super Mario III sex, the one-bedroom DFA Ranch... the list goes on.

anyone else notice the Reds are only 2.5 back of the Cards and they have the Marlins and Pirates the rest of the way. Cards have Padres and Brewers, plus a potential Giants makeup Astros have Pirates and Braves Carpenter pitched for the Cards last night meaning he can't go until Sunday, possibly Saturday again.

#36 of 43: By Ryno (September 27, 2006 05:02 PM) Does it matter how much the Cubs pay Rusch? the answer is "yes". if the cubs/tribune is on the hook for 3plus mil to rusch in 2007, that is money which clearly cannot be spent in a better fashion. if the insurance company is the one who writes the check, the club can do something else with that money. disclaimer: there is no precedent that hendry will do something brilliant with it, but hope springs eternal.

"anyone else notice the Reds are only 2.5 back of the Cards and they have the Marlins and Pirates the rest of the way." If the Cards cough it up, this would rival the 1964 Phillies. The Phillies were 6-1/2 games up with 12 to play ó they lost 10 straight and finished a game behind the Cardinals, who won the World Series.

Carlos? What happens in parachat, STAYS in parachat.

DyingCubFan: "If the Cards cough it up, this would rival the 1964 Phillies. The Phillies were 6-1/2 games up with 12 to play ó they lost 10 straight and finished a game behind the Cardinals, who won the World Series." This would be worse. The Cardinals were just up 8 1/2 games with 13 to play. And on Mike & Mike (ESPN Radio) this morning they said that no team in MLB hsitory has blown a bigger than 6 1/2 game lead in September. That is the whole month, not just teh last 2 weeks.

Not to engage in schadenfreude or anything, but wouldn't that be great?

I would love to see the Astros womack the Cardinals' asses.

If you take Hendry at his word, you really have to wonder why he doesn't have any plans to meet with Baker or Ramirez. I've got to believe that he knows exactly what direction he's going to go on Dusty. The Ramirez situation puzzles me. If Hendry didn't have some assurance, or at least a strong indication, that Ramirez was coming back next year, then Hendry really blew it by not trading him during the season. He's going to look like a complete fool if Ramirez walks and the Cubs end up getting nothing for him. As for the Trib article, I don't see it quite the same way as Phil Rogers. Hendry is the GM of the ball club. It's his job to build the team, hire the manager and coaches, and take care of the farm system. MacPhail is the President of the organization. It's not his job to step in every time Hendry hits a rough spot in the road. If MacPhail is going to have to pick up the slack for Hendry, then he needs to find another GM. I'm not a big MacPhail fan, but I don't blame him for not doing Hendry's job for him.

I missed where he said he didn't have plans to meet with Ramirez I heard preliminary talks between hendry and his agent so far

Rob G -- I was going based on memory. I thought a day or two ago it was reported that either Hendry or Ramirez' agent said that they did not have talks scheduled. Maybe someone can refresh my memory.

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

  • crunch (view)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

  • Charlie (view)

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.

The issue is the Cubs are 11-7 and have been on the road for 12 of those 18.  We should be at least 13-5, maybe 14-4. Jed isn't feeling any pressure to play anyone he doesn't see fit.
But Canario on the bench, Morel not at 3B for Madrigal and Wisdom in RF wasn't what I thought would happen in this series.
I was hoping for Morel at 3B, Canario in RF, Wisdom at DH and Madrigal as a pinch hitter or late replacement.
Maybe Madrigal starts 1 game against the three LHSP for Miami.
I'm thinking Canario goes back to Iowa on Sunday night for Mastrobuoni after the Miami LHers are gone.
Canario needs ABs in Iowa and not bench time in MLB.
With Seiya out for a while Wisdom is safe unless his SOs are just overwhelmingly bad.

My real issue with the lineup isn't Madrigal. I'm not a fan, but I've given up on that one.
It's Tauchman getting a large number of ABs as the de factor DH and everyday player.
I didn't realize that was going to be the case.
We need a better LH DH. PCA or ONKC need to force the issue in about a month.
But, even if they do so, Jed doesn't have to change anything if the Cubs stay a few over .500!!!

Totally depends on the team and the player involved. If your team’s philosophy is to pay huge dollars to bet on the future performance of past stars in order to win championships then, yes, all of the factors you mentioned are important.

If on the other hand, if the team’s primary focus is to identify and develop future stars in an effort to win a championship, and you’re a young player looking to establish yourself as a star, that’s a fit too. Otherwise your buried within your own organization.

Your comment about bringing up Canario for the purposes of sitting him illustrates perfectly the dangers of rewarding a non-performing, highly paid player over a hungry young prospect, like Canario, who is perpetually without a roster spot except as an insurance call up, but too good to trade. Totally disincentivizing the performance of the prospect and likely diminishing it.

Sticking it to your prospects and providing lousy baseball to your fans, the consumers and source of revenue for your sport, solely so that the next free agent gamble finds your team to be a comfortable landing spot even if he sucks? I suppose  that makes sense to some teams but it’s definitely not the way I want to see my team run.

Once again, DJL, our differences in philosophy emerge!
