After writing how the Pirates haven't been using Craig Wilson enough, we'll see him tonight in place of Sean Casey, who will be out 6-8 weeks with two fractures in his lower back after a collision with John Mabry last night. Yeowch. In other Pirate (and ex-Cub) injury news, Jody Gerut has been placed on the Restricted List after electing to have knee surgery against the wishes of the team. The Cubs made a roster move too, sending Michael Wuertz to AAA where he blongs and recalling the 100% valley-fever-free Roberto Novoa. Todd Walker gets four hits last night and sits tonight. Get used to it, Cubs fans. Jerome Williams makes his first start of the season tonight. As Kerry Wood, Wade Miller and Mark Prior inch closer to returning (Wood threw to hitters today and both Miller and Prior had 40-pitch sessions yesterday), Williams needs to establish himself if he hopes to stay in the rotation past May. Then again, he could always take Glendon Rusch's spot.

Comments

both Miller and Prior had 40-pitch sessions **sigh** No they didn't, ruz.

I hope Walker is banged up or something and it hasn't come out yet or there is no great reason Hairston is in today for Walker at 2B. I think Williams is mainly a GB pitcher, but Walker just had 2 days off against LHP's, no need to sit him down against a RHP. His defense isn't that great, but come on. I hate platoons, for this exact reason. I think I liked it better when Hairston was in Baker's doghouse, instead of Walker being in Hendry's doghouse.

Is the rational for sitting Walker that Williams is a ground ball pitcher? Walker is the third best offensive weapon we have, and we have JHJ hitting in the two-hole...

Ruz, Duke is a southpaw. Manny, JHJ is in their cause Duke is left-handed and Jwill is a groundball pitcher. It is the best match-up just like he said said he was going to use.

lefty on the mound...ground ball...hairston is faster and better D...that's no macias they marched out there. so are they sitting the hot man or is the days off he had what led to a refreshed walker getting the day he had last night? no one knows...just like no one knows how walker would do if he started tonite. the team has 2 good 2nd basemen. hurrah and junk.

It is VERY IMPORTANT for a manager to sit hot hitting 2b because other wise the team might succeed if the player is talented and gets in a rhythm. Either that or Baker is, oh, NUTS.

Crunch how much do you get paid to spread this crap around? Yes Dusty is a genius by resting Walker more he gets more hits. We should rest him all season and save him for important games and he is guaranteed to get 4 or 5 hits.

I think this is a bit of nitpicking... I am along with everybody who thinks Walker is a central piece to this lineup and club but to me is not a big of a deal to see Hairston in there today with a lefthander pitcher and Cubs groundball pitcher. If Walker plays against the righthanders he will get plenty of at-bats and if Hairston doesn't produce against lefthanders then we hope that Walker gets more playingtime against lefties. But the fact that Hairston is a shot in the circumstances explained above is fine to me. Dusty made me sick last year, but so far his decisiones as not as clear-cut arguable as before. Historically their numbers vs. lefthanders are comparable anyway. Luis

actually if it is a lefty on the mound I take back my smart ass comments. Seriously.

superj...once again i come with rational. once again you come with pure bullshit. look...walker sits for 2 days sans a popout and he comes back to hit 4. now, you wanna go on and on about the virtue of rest leading to walker's hot bat? no, cuz that's as pure b/s as saying 1 game equals a hot bat. and once again, if you dont like something i say you should stop acting like a 12 year old ya damn crybaby. whine whine whine. yes, im paid by the cubs cuz my opinion differs from yours and you're the only rational person here. anyone who deviates from you opinon must be insane or paid off or whatever conspiracy theory you wanna dream up this time.

> both Miller and Prior had 40-pitch sessions They had them yesterday, not today. That wasn't clear in what I wrote, so I fixed it. And, my bad for not having Duke listed as a lefty, which mitigates (a bit) Walker sitting.

Anyone get mlb.tv to play on Mac OS X? I'm having trouble after just signing up this year. Worked two years ago, not so for me now...

Jordan: "and we have JHJ hitting in the two-hole..." Where would hairston bat??? Here is his and Walkers numbers over the past 3 years: Walker: .287/.345/.452 Hairston: .277/.354/.379 So actually hairston gets on base more than Walker, just has less power, thus why he should be batting 2nd. I did not know we were facing a LHp today, that is why hariston is starting, makes much more sense.

Chifan: "JHJ is in their cause Duke is left-handed" Thanks, for some reason I thought a RHP was starting tonight...makes much more sense.

Weurtz sent down...Novoa brought up. Just mentioned on TV broadcast. Good idea...since Weurtz has been shelled and has lost 7-10 MPH on his fastball. Get him down there to try and fix things.

Jordan--i have mlb.tv on my Mac and it works well...is there anyway to get the game on full screen? It sucks watching it on an ipod sized screen.

Red Sox called up Van Buren today after throwing Boomer on the DL...It'll be interesting to see how he fairs with the Sox.

Shame on all of you for not knowing that Duke was a lefty.

And Jordan, MLB.tv works fine for me on Mac OSX. Email me if you would like to discuss...

Isn't it nice having Burnitz on the opposing team? Btw, any of you find it ironic that Novoa had a hell of an illness *during* Spring Training and is already ready for action and they were claiming that Prior was behind because of a week or two in the hospital during the winter? I am tired of these towel/flat mound/simulated game crap routines of Rothschild... seems like everytime an important pitcher says they hurt somewhere you already know they will miss at least a month a half with these crap routines. I remember Fergy's comments about never doing any towel drill and stuff like that. Luis

I have it working with Flip4Mac and opening in a quicktime window. I can make it bigger, but it is much lower quality than I was hoping. I had to set my screen to millions of colors instead of thousands to get it to display correctly...

Actually, what I was getting at is Miller had a 60 pitch session. Prior had a 40. Wood (pitching simulated game today of 3 innings) Miller (about to pitch simulated games) Prior (scheduled to throw 45 pitches Monday)

Baby Z? Jerome looking loco, and I ain't talkin beads.

Actually, what I was getting at is Miller had a 60 pitch session. Prior had a 40. The Cubs.com article said they both threw 40: "Wade Miller, who had similar arthroscopic surgery on his right shoulder as Wood, but one month later, also threw 40 pitches on Friday in Arizona. He did two 20-pitch sessions, resting in-between, and is making good progress, Rothschild said." http://tinyurl.com/em6g2

Hairston to RF, Walker to 2B! Do it Dusty!!!!!!

"Actually, what I was getting at is Miller had a 60 pitch session. Prior had a 40." okay..its time to cut prior. ive heard rumors of his lax offseason programs, but it is 100% inexcusable to sit around drinking 40s while miller is throwing.

LOL @ Crunch. Whatever Dusty, you have Walker rotting away, we're down 1-0, put in Bynum, whatever. What's your excuse Manny?

Yikes! Bynum must be playing for his bat, because it sure isn't his glove. Just yikes. Even Mabry...

he deserves a nickname after Bynum took his sweet time in RF to retrieve Craig Wilson's double that he turned into a triple...and eventually scored on a sac fly: freddy the freeloafer?

Ramirez loafing too...sheesh why not watch a deep flyball for a minute or two.

WPZ: "What's your excuse Manny?" Go FUCK yourself...

Hey, good start by JWill today. Definately earns anotehr few starts. Kept us in game. Cedeno error looks very costly right now. Still got a shot only down 2-1 going into 8th.

I don't know which end of the pipe Carrie Muskrat is smoking, Christian. But she ought to read her own articles because she's contradicting herself. Unless his arm just fell off, Miller is ahead of Prior. It makes no sense for Miller to throw only 40 pitches Friday and, in fact, Kiley over at the Suntimes reported he threw 60. There's also these previous reports: Cubs | Miller throwing more from mound Sun, 9 Apr 2006 23:08:47 -0700 The Chicago Tribune reports Chicago Cubs SP Wade Miller (shoulder), who had offseason shoulder surgery, is throwing more than 50 pitches from a mound and is on target for an April or May return to the lineup. Cubs | Miller throws off the mound Fri, 7 Apr 2006 10:08:12 -0700 Carrie Muskat, of Cubs.MLB.com, reports Chicago Cubs SP Wade Miller (shoulder) threw three sets of 15 pitches off the mound Wednesday, April 5. No timeline was given on his return but he underwent the same surgery procedure Thursday, September 29, 2005, as Cubs SP Kerry Wood (shoulder) did one month earlier.

CUBS LOSE!!! FIRE DUSTY!!! ha ha Poor 9th inning. 4 pitches...Neifi and Cedeno swing at first pitch. When will Cedeno get his forst BB?? At least Jwill pitched well. Hope Rusch can put down the doughnuts for one day and pitch well tomorrow. UGH..........

Andy Sisco comes in with bases loaded, gives up all 3 inhereited runs and his ERA drops to 12.60 from 15.00...NICE!!

williams pitches well cedeno, bynum lay eggs sad news from pittsburgh

Cubs are last in the MLB in BB. What is the deal? Dusty is nuts or Walker is injured. I of course think Dusty is nuts. Crunch is on the payroll (crunch what is logical about the fact that Walker resting led to his 4 hits and so you should rest him more? That is NUTSO!) . Pierre is batting .214. J Will's performance was pretty good.

Cedneo now has 3 errors and two of them were very costly, including todays. I think it is fair to start getting worried a little about his throws. His glove seems to be good, but he also had like 5-7 balls thrown into the dirt that Lee had to pick out. He is batting .351 so far, so that is making up for his defense, but that will come down and with him swinging at everything and having ZERO walks so far, I hope he starts to calm down some and know he is the everyday SS and relax.

sj? evidently you didnt read my posts cuz i pose a question/situation twice about his "hot bat"... i'll rehash it... a 1 game hot streak after 2 days where he saw 1ab and popped out. now...is the question...why sit a guy on a 1-game hot streak? or...is the questions...would more rest for walker give him more days like yesterday? i find both scenerios believable, explainable, and totally f'n retarded.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

  • Childersb3 (view)

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

Teheran minor league deal is done, per MLB.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Based on Phil’s sound analysis it sounds like a no brainer for Almonte to be placed on waivers as today’s roster move. We shall see.

  • Arizona Phil (view)

I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."

Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Totally agree. The 26 man roster very rarely consists of the 13 best position players and 13 best pitchers.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
-give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

-Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

  • Childersb3 (view)

Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.
