GAME 8 REVIEW
REDS 8 CUBS 3
Recap | Box Score | Play-by-play | Game Chart | Photos
W: Eric Milton (2-0) L: Carlos Zambrano (0-1)

The first piece of good news is we don't face the Reds again until the end of May. The second piece of good news is we're off to play the Pirates next and they've struggled mightily out of the gate. The third piece of good news is Matt Murton broke out of his mini-slump with 2 RBI's, 2 Hits and a Home Run. The final piece of good news is I saved a bunch of money on my car insurance.

What I really took from this game was the importance of on-field leadership. Without Henry Blanco catching and Neifi manning the hot corner, we could really see the calming influence they both had on Carlos Zambrano as he really settled down after gettting into some tough jams early. Oh wait, no he didn't, he tried to pick off Eric Milton from first for no apparent good reason and then he tried to pick off Eric Milton later in the game from third base for no apparent good reason. And I believe at one point I actually saw steam coming from his ears. At least Barrett's all well and rested. Hopefully his bat won't cool off with the rest.

What's there to say? The Cubs stunk up the joint today, Baker should of forgotten about getting the scrubs some starts today and put some better bats in the lineup, waiting until we were a bit closer to full strength (or at least until Aramis came back). Walker hits lefties just fine and Milton just fine as well, same goes for Barrett. Off for a nine game road trip from Pittsburgh to LA to St. Louis. Let's get them tomorrow Sean Marshall!!!

you just know the botched pick-off attempt allowed our fearless ace to ruffle himSELF once again leading to the plunking, assuming it was accidental, and even if it wasnt, its still due to his being frazzled by his own blunder. and that attempt to pick milton off 3rd? why? like, why try to steal 3rd w/ barrett up? just stupid. the 10M arm and the 10 cent head is right boy.

oh, and did i mention that body-condom wearing pinch-whiffer bynum sucks? thats the one cub i dont like so far. he just waves at shit! how does he even manage to foul stuff off? talk about a wasted roster spot.

Jody Gerut has been put on the minor league restricted list (no pay) after undergoing knee surgery that the Pirates felt was unnecessary....

I just put this on the last thread about Eddie Munster's piece today: "Matt Morris, A.J. Burnett, Kevin Millwood, Jarrod Washburn, Jeff Weaver and angry old man Kenny Rogers, none of whom would have won the Cy Young Award but any of whom would have helped." Lets look at these guys: Matt Morris- Hates the Cubs would not come here. AJ Burnett- While I love his stuff he is to big of an injurry risk to pay 10 mil for. Kevin Millwood- See AJ Burnett with less upside. Jarrod Washburn- Rusch - 50 pounds Jeff Weaver- I like him, but everbody else on this board did not want to touch him with a 10 foot pole. So those you said that and now want him are hippocrits. Kenny Rogers- Rusch- 20 pounds + temper of a madman. So all in all not good options. The best thing would have been for JH to not give Florida Dontrelle 2.0 and give them one-pitch Hill instead.

Who's Dontrelle 2.0? It's impossible that Zambrano can stink up the joint with Henry Blanco catching. Henry Blanco never calls for 'Gopher Ball' like Michael Barrett does. Maybe they should let whoever is catching Maddux catch some more, since he is the only catcher who seems to realize BB's and HR's are bad.

Chifan, 'What is the one off-season move you wish the Cubs made? (Be specific) [The Real Neal] Jeff Weaver' TCR 4/2 - And several times throughout the off-season.

Real neal, The answer would be Nolasco. Yes its probably a little over the top to compare him to the D-train, but I always thought of him as our best pitching prospect. I just hope Pierre starts hitting so we didnt give him for nothing. Also hope if he does we re-up him so we dont lose him for a one-year rental.

Another interesting outing for LHP Luke Hagerty tonight at Daytona: 1.1 IP 1 H 3 R 1 ER 4 BB 2 K 2 HBP Left game with bases loaded and one out in the 2nd, but Chris Shaver (who will probably soon be replacing Hagerty in the Daytona Cubs rotation) pitched 4.2 IP of no-hit no-run ball, with 8 K. On a positive note, Hagerty's ERA went down (was 21.60, now is 15.00).

Rob G.: "Baker should of forgotten about getting the scrubs some starts today and put some better bats in the lineup," It's funny many White Sox fans said the same thing last year about Ozzie resting starters. I think they did ok last year.

Real Neal, I know you wanted Weaver. But we were the only that did my comments about Weaver were directed at guys who didn't want Weaver and then after they see Rusch's outings are lambasting Hendry for not signing him.

Chi fan, Milwood was either 1 or 2 in the AL in ERA last year, sounds like upside to me

There were a couple other starters floating around that could have been had. at one point, the white sox had too many starters and I believe they got rid of el duque There was also the dude who used to be on the Dbacks but got traded somewhere back east. Sorry, horrible with names and its late.

Can we please trade for Adam Dunn? I don't care where he plays or who we'd have to give up to get him. I'm just sick of watching him destroy Cub pitching. How many HRs has he hit against the Cubs in the past say, 3 seasons? Anyone? The guy is just sick.

HIGHLIGHTS & LOWLIGHTS FROM DOWN ON THE FARM THURSDAY: Besides Luke Hagerty's wild night at Daytona (see previous post), LHP Carlos Perez (one of the two players the Cubs got from BAL for C-Pat) got racked up again (also at Daytona), and Mike Billek (the Cubs 2005 Rule 4 Draft compensation pick for losing Matt Clement to BOS) got hit hard again at Peoria. On the bright side, LHP Chris Shaver threw 4.2 innings of perfect relief, striking out 8. Look for Shaver to replace Hagerty in Daytona's starting rotation, and don't be surprised if the Cubs just go ahead and release Luke Hagerty, and Carlos Perez may not be far behind. Shaver is a big dude (6'7 235), and is one of many former and current Cubs prospects signed by Virginia-area scout Billy Swope. Some of you may have noticed the disproportionate number of players from Virginia the Cubs have signed in recent years, like Sean Marshall, Jason Dubois, Brendan Harris, Justin Jones, Nic Jackson, Clay Rapada, Matt Craig, Mike Mallory, Matt Avery, Scott Taylor, and Peter Farina, just to name a few. Well, that's all thanks to Mr. Swope. Back to the Daytona game... Ryan Harvey hit two HR and threw out two baserunners (one at 3B and one at home) from RF. He also struck out twice and grounded into a DP. A prototypical Ryan Harvey night of extremes. In other games, starters LHP Raul Valdes (Iowa) and RHP Randy Wells (West Tenn) each had their second strong outing in a row. -- BATTING (ALL LEVELS): IOWA: Felix Pie, CF: 1-4, K (.344 BA & .389 OBP, 1 HR & 11 RBI, 3 for 3 SB, 3 BB & 5 K in 32 PA) Ryan Theriot, 2B: 1-4, R (.355 & .404 OBP) Casey McGehee, 3B: 0-3 (.231) Geovany Soto, C: 1-1 (.304) Michael Restovich, RF: 3-4, RBI, 3B (.259) Brandon Sing 0-4, 1B: K (.192, 0 HR & 0 RBI, 2 BB & 8 K in 28 PA) Jamal Strong, LF: 0-4, 2 K (.133) Augie Ojeda, SS: 2-3, 2B (.500) Casey Kopitzke, C: 0-2, BB, GIDP, OCS (.000) Jeff Deardorff, PH-3B: 2-2, PH-2B, SOLO HR (.263) WEST TENN: Chris Walker, CF: 1-3, BB, SB, CS (.303 BA & .344 OBP, 3 SB & 1 CS) Eric Patterson, 2B: 0-4, 2 K (.258 BA & .314 OBP, 5 for 5 SB) Scott Moore, 3B: 1-4 (.233, 0 HR & 0 RBI) Richard Lewis, 1B: 0-3, R, BB, 2 K (.296) Micah Hoffpauir, LF: 1-4, SOLO HR, GIDP (.222) Adam Greenberg, RF: 1-3, R (.192 BA & .222 OBP) Tony Richie, C: 1-3, 2 RBI, OSB (.273) Carlos Rojas, SS: 0-3, 2 K (.100) Gary Cates, PH: 0-1 (.154) DAYTONA: Jemel Spearman, 3B: 2-4, R, 2B, SB, HBP, PICKED-OFF, E (.206) Sam Fuld, CF: 2-5, SB (.242) Ryan Harvey, RF: 2-5, TWO HR (3 RBI), 2 K, GIDP, THREW OUT TWO BASERUNNERS (.318, 2 HR & RBI, 10 K in 23 PA) Nic Jackson, DH: 1-5, 2 K, SB (.206) Jake Fox, C: 1-3, R, 2B, BB, HBP (.250, 0 HR & 0 RBI) Matt Craig, 1B: 1-4, RBI, 2 K (.148 Jeff Culpepper, LF: 1-4 (.111) Joe Simokaitis, SS: 0-2, BB, HBP, E (.304) Nate Spears, 2B: 0-3 (.143) Issmael Salas, 2B: 0-1 (.333) PEORIA: Robinson Chirinos, 2B: 0-4, R, BB, 2 K Dylan Johnston, SS: 1-4, R, 2B, BB, 2 K, E Brandon Taylor, 3B: 1-4, 2 R, RBI, BB Ryan Norwood, 1B: 1-3, BB, K Jesus Valdez, RF: 1-4, RBI Alberto Garcia, DH: 0-4, 3 K Johnny Defendis, LF: 1-3, BB, E Mark Reed, C: 1-4, 2 K, 2 OSB, 1 OCS Davy Gregg, CF: 1-4, K -- PITCHING (ALL LEVELS): IOWA: Raul Valdes: 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 2 K - 95 pitches Brandon Emanuel: 1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K Mark Watson: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K Roberto Novoa: 2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 0 K (W 1-0) TO Raul Valdes: 10 IP, 11 H, 1 R (1 ER), 3 BB, 5 K (1-0 0.90 ERA) Roberto Novoa: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 2 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 3 K (1-0 2.70 ERA) WEST TENN: Randy Wells: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 1 R (1 ER), 2 BB, 4 K (W 1-1) Clay Rapada: .2 IP, 0 H 0 R, 3 BB, 1 K Thomas Atlee: 1.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K (SV 1) TO Randy Wells: 11.2 IP, 9 H, 2 R (2 ER), 3 BB, 9 K (1-1 1.54 ERA) Clay Rapada: 6.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 4 BB, 6 K (0-1 0.00 ERA 4 SV) DAYTONA: Luke Hagerty: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 3 R (1 ER), 4 BB, 2 K, 2 HBP (L 0-2) Chris Shaver: 4.2 IP, 0 H, 0 R 0 BB, 8 K Carlos Perez: 2 IP, 7 H, 4 R (4 ER), 2 BB, 1 K Carlos Vasquez: 1 IP, 0 H 0 R, 0 BB, 2 K TO Luke Hagerty: 3 IP, 4 H, 7 R (5 ER), 9 BB, 4 K (0-2 15.00 ERA) Chris Shaver: 8.2 IP, 4 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 10 K (0-0 0.00 ERA) Carlos Perez: 3 IP, 12 H, 11 R (11 ER), 6 BB, 3 K (0-0 33.00 ERA) PEORIA: Mike Billek: 4.2 IP, 7 H, 5 R (0 ER), 1 BB, 0 K, 1 HR, HBP (L 0-2) Matt Avery: 2.1 IP, 3 H, 2 R (2 ER), 2 BB, 0 K, 1 HR Jesse Estrada: 1 IP, 5 H, 3 R (3 ER), 1 BB, 0 K HBP TO Mike Billek: 8.2 IP, 14 H, 11 R (5 ER), 2 BB, 6 K (0-2 5.19)

AZ Phil never count out a Ball State Cardinal...oh wait Bullington hasn't worked out very well either...but Brad Snyder will be the real deal!

I thought split squad games were for March. Oh, well. How did we do in our oth---WHA? That was our starting lineup today? Eegads! Hey, if you were to tell me we'd be 8 games into the season, with Wood, Prior, and Miller on the DL and Ramirez and Jones hurt and out the last two games, i'd take 3-5 and be happy, much less 5-3. Then again, if you told me Barrett was leading the league in RBI's, Cedeno was hitting for average, Murton had porgressed enough to move into the cleanup spot already... i'd expect at least 5-3... All in all, if we take this series from the Bucs we're in good shape. 7-4 heading into week 3 with the injuries we've been dealt is a good place to be (please stop me if this is sounding like 2K4 or 2K5...)

Can we please trade for Adam Dunn? I don't care where he plays or who we'd have to give up to get him. I'm just sick of watching him destroy Cub pitching. How many HRs has he hit against the Cubs in the past say, 3 seasons? Anyone? The guy is just sick. Dunn has hit 25 HRs in 72 games vs the Cubs in about 4.5 years.

We should not be assuming the Cubbies will be taking the series from the Bucs. They'll be facing Santos, Duke, and Snell. Despite rough starts for all 3 of them, they are all very good pitchers and capable of getting it done. Check out this post from yesterday: Fred Garver: Uh-Oh. on closer look at the Bucs starters for the series, Santos, Duke, and Snell: Santos is 3-3 with a 2.74 ERA in eight career starts against the Cubs. In two starts last season against the Cubs, Duke was 2-0 with a 0.56 ERA. In eight innings of relief against the Cubs in 2005, Snell gave up just one run. Exactly. The Pirates are not all that impressive, but the thing that's failed them this year has been pitching and they do have good pitching. Santos pitched a Reds/Pirates game and held the Cincinatti Cub Killers to 2 runs into the 6th inning.

Local vibe is pretty down on Pirate's pitching as very, very crumbly. Youth, inexperience, etc as Ron Cook says, there is no shortage of excuses but they still suck. http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/06104/682092-87.stm Of course, jumping on that "Lets Shell Them" bandwagon is a good way to jinx this series and end up with some pitching gems (but don't bet on it)

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS
    FB: 90-92
    SL: 83-85
    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...

AZ Phil, speaking of Jordan Wicks having better command when he tires a bit, I remember reading about Dennis Lamp 40 years ago and his sinker that was better after 3 or 4 innings when he would tire a bit and get more sink with a little less speed on the pitch.  The key for Lamp was getting to the 4th inning.
