Mariners @ Cubs: Miley vs Arrieta (Game 103)

The Cubs (and the good Arrieta?) face another lefty. SEA (51-50): LHP Wade Miley (6-8, 5.23) CHC (62-40): RHP Jake Arrieta (12-4, 2.76) First pitch: 1:20pmCST Arrieta had a no-decision against the Sox on the Southside on Monday (6 IP, 4 ER, 6 K, 2 BB). He’s 0-2 with a 5.55 for the month. The Mariners are 14-69 (.203) against him. Cruz and his PEDs are 4-10 with a HR. Miley lost in Toronto his last time out (6 IP, 2 ER, 4 K, 2 BB), to complete a string of 6 straight losses. Youch. He’s 3-4 with a 5.46 on the road this year. The Cubs are 12-56 (.214) against him. Fowler is 6-17 with a HR. Hernandez (5-4, 3.45) versus Hendricks (9-7, 2.39), ruined by ESPN tomorrow at 7:08pmCST. Go Cubs!

IMO Jake is really the key to winning the World Series, but maybe I'm putting too much emphasis on one player.

He was a big key to the crazy start, a big key to the end of last year, a big key in not beating the Mets (although lots of help from a tired inexperienced team there), so although the team as a whole can get through a series with a good Jake it will be tough with a bad Jake. I don't think it's realistic to have the insanely great Jake again, but maybe it is. Seeing today's box score it appears maybe it is - but I haven't been able to tune in yet.

this game is f'n flying by. also, "Hernandez (5-4, 3.45) versus Hendricks (9-7, 2.39), ruined by ESPN tomorrow at 7:08pmCST." gets 1000 upvotes and a gold star.

Looking for Bryant to break up another no-no with a long fly ball in the sixth. But any hit will do.

It's the law of baseball -- if you score 10+ runs in a game, you must struggle to score in the next game. Particulalry against an inferior pitcher.

Miley thru six: no hits, no walks, 8 K's - one batter (Bryant) reached on a error by Seager (hard hit but clearly an error). At 71 pitches

Complete craziness bottom seven. Bottom line Cubs were fortunate to score a run And of course Arrieta walks the first two batters in the eighth (to be fair he was totally squeezed on Zunino's walk to start the inning)

That second walk he gave Up was awful though with no pitches even close to being a strike. He was trying to pitch around bunt and that almost never works. That said Rondon should have been brought in after the first walk and should have been left in to finish the inning because he was looking like he had good stuff.

First time I've ever seen a base running slump -- he's made some poor decisions recently, but I thought it was a great idea to try to score there -- it's not like Heyward was going to get a 2-out hit against a LHP. Sliding feet-first into home is probably the safe (ugh) way to go, but it's hard to get the foot on the plate.

Clearly the Cubs need to clear out the farm and trade for another closer Where's Ed Lynch when you need him?

Wow -- Chapman gives up a hit and everything completely caves in. I think the Cubs went into collective shock. Stolen base with the pitcher holding the ball, WP that should have been caught or blocked, then Russell with a 2-out error on a routine play. Cubs handed them 2 runs. Throw in a Fowler bobble and it was a mess. Hopefully, that is all out of their system now -- let's get a W tomorrow.

"Diamondbacks designated RHP Josh Collmenter for assignment." aww...he was my 2nd favorite crapballer. his control issues are rather severe at the moment.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

welcome back happ!  double off the wall 1st PA back.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
