Cubs @ Reds: Hendricks vs Reed (Game 77)

How about a grand salami with a side of extra innings?CHC (50-26): RHP Kyle Hendricks (5-6, 2.76)
CIN (29-49): LHP Cody Reed (0-1, 6.75)
First pitch: 11:35amCST

Hendricks, who managed to stay out of last night’s game, had a no-decision in Miami on Friday (5 IP, 0 ER, 5 K, 4 BB). That game also featured a first-inning error by Russell, which lead to Bour’s grand slam. Hendricks has missed the Reds so far this year. They are 12-47 (.255) against him. Votto is 3-5 with 2 HR.

This is the rookie Reed’s third start. He was acquired in the Cueto deal last year--along with Lamb and Finnegan. Reed lost to the Padres his last time out (5 IP, 5 ER, 6 K, 2 BB). He also gave up 4 ER in 7 innings in Houston for his MLB debut. None of the Cubs have faced him.

Lackey (7-4, 3.29) versus Matz (7-3, 3.29) in New York tomorrow at 6:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

After last night, an inside-the-park HR seems kind of run-of-the-mill somehow. Sounds bad for Hamilton. Hope he's okay--listening on the radio.

It looked like Hamilton got screened by Duvall and that Duvall just barely deflected the ball off of his glove--redirecting it slightly without taking away much of its momentum. At least it didn't turn into a Schwarber/Fowler situation. Hamilton and Duvall are both pretty important youngish players for the Reds.

it's not like this CIN team is lost-cause horrible, but aside from defense and power this is a truly horrible team. kinda crazy arrieta lost to them and yesterday's game had to go 15 innings for the cubs win.

I believe Willson now has more CS than MIggy. The kid has an arm. Also, Russell is amazingly good on those plays at 2nd.

Interesting choices when guys get healthy. LaStella, Fowler & Soler replace Coghlan, Almora and Sczcur? I assume they don't want Almora to sit. Despite MIggy's demise, I assume they keep him around to mentor Contreras?

Not certain why the site has been slowed. Worked much of Wednesday on it and will continue today. Sorry for the inconvenience. I will probably take it offline for a while, but it will be up before the game against the Mets.

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.

sure am ready for p.wisdom and m.masterboney to swap roster spots.

The fifth inning has not been kind to Wicks this season. Giving up leadoff doubles to Tucker Barnhart is also not good for business. IIRC, the Cubs are on the hook for the majority of Barnhart’s salary this season to add insult to injury (could definitely be wrong here).

Kris Bryant to IL with low back strain. He’s keeping the Rockies docs busy.
