Cubs @ Dodgers: Arrieta vs. Wood (Game 129)

Put away the razor blades. Jake to the rescue!

CHC (73-55): RHP Jake Arrieta (16-6, 2.22)
LAD (72-56): LHP Alex Wood (9-8, 3.70)
First pitch: 7:08pmCT

Arrieta finally gets what he deserves (other than a raise): a national audience. He was passed over as an All-star and has spent the last couple of months making everyone responsible look like fools. We’re running out of superlatives to talk about Arrieta’s season and the run he’s been on, so we might have to start using other languages. ¡Increíble!

He beat the Giants (6 IP, 0 ER) on Tuesday for his fifth win in as many starts. He missed the Dodgers during their four-game swing through Wrigley last month. They are 14-53 (.264) against him. Crawford is 5-11 with a HR.

Wood is 2-2 with a 4.34 ERA since being acquired by the Dodgers from the Braves. He won in Cinci (5.2, 1 ER) his last time out. The Cubs are 10-24 against him. Coghlan is 4-5.

A 2-4 road trip would not be disastrous, and we have the Reds teed up for the return to Wrigley. The Cubs are 9-4 against them so far this year. For the series, we’ll see Holmberg vs. Hendricks, DeScalfani vs. Haren, and Iglesias vs. Hammel.

According to reports, Javy Baez will be up when rosters expand on Tuesday.

Go Cubs!

Oh hell yes first career no hitter for Arrieta. He had such nasty breaking stuff today and was locating it perfectly. 2 and 6 on the road trip, imo, while not ideal is completely fine with the cushion we had. This though is the perfect ending to this. edit/ 2 and 4! Even better lol

!!!!

Shazzam! Man, this season has been really fun. -and they're not even 'good' yet!

when a guy like baez is considered "oh yeah, he's nice when we can find room for him" and m.olt might as well not exist you know you're packed at the top of the MLB-ready food chain. now the system needs pitchers...starters and relievers...and keep the talent pipeline moving from the bottom up.

Amen. It'll be fascinating to see how Theo/Jed maneuver this winter to get some consistency off the mound. Optimism. Feels so odd. God I hope no asteroids hit the earth in the next 12-14 months.

Awesome! Now, get the hell out of California and back to where we get hits with RISP.

Jake is cold blooded no reaction after no hitter Guy becoming a legend

Congrats, Jake. Castro's AB in the 7th was a comforting moment of certainty in an otherwise stressful evening.

Had to love his press conference in PJs. I agree with those above -- 2-4 on a trip facing MadBum and Kershaw is OK. We seem to always have trouble in LA. It would be good to pick up another game or two on SF while we play CIN and they face Greinke & Kershaw. SF's brutal stretch ends Wednesday -- their schedule gets a lot easier after that, while we have a lot of PIT and Cards in Sept. C'mon Javy - we need some thunder against LHP.

from rotowurld... "Arrieta has been unbelievable since mid-June, compiling a 1.07 ERA, 0.76 WHIP and 101/23 K/BB ratio over 101 innings in his last 14 starts."

ESPN critters were talking about his workout regimen. Really paying off late in the season. I'm assuming he will get the start in the one game playoff. It seems he's always got a no hitter going til the 5th or so anyway, often longer. Maybe he can do it in the one gamer.

More Arrieta no-hitters! And more ex-softball player commentators! Less Kruk.

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
