Hendricks lost in Cincinnati (6 IP, 5 ER) on Wednesday. Even with that blemish, he’s 2-1 with a 1.69 in his last 5 starts. He had a no-decision in Colorado this year (4.1 IP, 5 ER) in a game the Cubs won 6-5 on a Fowler 9th inning 2-run homer. The Rockies are 14-43 (.326) against him. Blackmon and Morneau are both 3-6.

De La Rosa lost at home (6 IP, 6 ER) to the Rangers at home his last time out. He has some rocky mountain highs with his splits. He’s 4-2 with a 1.93 on the road and 2-2 with a 6.62 at home. The Cubs are 17-78 against him. Denorfia is 6-24.

Go Cubs!

"Gordon Wittenmyer @GDubCub Look for Beeler to start tomorrow" ...why the hell is wada starting tonight in iowa when beeler is eating a roster space in the bigs?

quick cut/paste from rotowurld... CHC:Pads have discussed Starlin Castro with Cubs (Source: Jon Morosi on Twitter) OAK:Mets acquire Tyler Clippard from Athletics LAA:Angels acquire Shane Victorino from Red Sox

OK, enough is enough. This is absolutely ridiculous. It looks like the Strop game was, in fact, the inflection point of the season -- one pitch away from being 10 over .500, never to reach that level again. EDIT: Baseball is one weird game, man.

Matt Spiegel ‏@MattSpiegel670 28m28 minutes ago Just heard from a very good source: Cubs in heavy talks to acquire James Shields from the Padres, for 1 MLB ready player and 2 prospects. Matt Spiegel ‏@MattSpiegel670 28m28 minutes ago Was told James Shields is "very close" to a done deal to become a Cub. He does not have a no-trade clause. Buster Olney ‏@Buster_ESPN 26m26 minutes ago The Cubs are not pursuing James Shields. ------ I purpose a dance off to see who's right.

addison russell...unf. his 2nd D is getting so much better. it helps that he's not ceding so much ground of coverage to castro and going full-on a whole lot more. still, i'm ready to see him at SS.

rondon for closer seems to be closer to reality every time motte goes out there. he's wild and pretty much just throwing his mid-90s fastball. last 2 games have been ugly. gwah...r.soriano in with men on 2nd/3rd, 0 outs...up by 2.

HOLY SHIT. yeah, COL leads in the 9th after the cubs go into it with a 2 run lead. i've seen this movie before.

I hate to say it but Montero is the one they miss the most. He was a difficult out at the plate, and experienced veteran. And he made the pitchers better.

No shit. I really do think Montero is the missing link right now. He was a very tough out, a great leader, and an experienced catcher. When they get him back Schwarbs goes to LF and we'll get a little stability. Im not saying we'll be great. But right now there's total void at times.

that was awesome. going into a series after being swept vs the worst team in the game...looking like crap into the 4th down by 4...get a lead...extend it by another run...lose it in the 9th...win in the 9th with 2 outs. a win is a win, but some are more stressful and fun than others.

I was on my way to the bathroom to throw up when I heard that wonderful sound a Bryant HR makes when it leaves the bat. But, yeah....Motte....he has been good until Friday, but when he couldn't put Descalso away, I had a bad feeling....

Cubs aren't winning many, but the last 3 have been doozies: Coming back from 5 down (Teagarden!), the Schwarber game, and Bryant's first walk-off HR. On a sour note -- watching Soler play RF is not encouraging. Big, fast, strong arm, but he seems to have no concept of how to get to the baseball. He turned a few doubles into triple over the weekend. Motte's time seems to be up -- if you only throw fastballs, they better be 100mph fastballs. 95/96 doesn't cut it any more.

Gotta be Rondon -- he has given up 1ER in his last 20 innings -- and that was when the Sox scored a run without a hit. He also has more than one pitch.

In the good news department, Baez, Lake and Olt have nice numbers at Iowa. Villanueva not bad ... Bad News dept. Alcantara has really struggled batting just .240 but he does have 11 HR. I could see a deal where Cubs trade Castro / Lake / Vogelbomb and maybe even Alcantara and or Olt for a decent pitcher and maybe a bat.

Someone was looking for a few days off for Rizzo/Bryant. Does not The Olt do that? Last 10 he's hitting .389 with a HR in each of last 3. Little better off the bench than Teagarter? Still K-ing 1/3 though.

Yeah, Olt is finally starting to hit at AAA. And he would provide some pop off the bench. Right now with 13 pitchers and 3 catchers, the pinch-hit options are terrible. If Schwarber doesn't start, he is good, and Denorfia/Coghlan (whoever doesn't start) usually provide good ABs, but otherwise Herrera, Ross, and Teagarden?  Ugh.

Ideally, I would option a pitcher to get to 12, and then try to option Teagarden too. You could then go with Schwarber/Ross for a couple of weeks until Montero is back, and then add 2 bench bats: Olt and Lake (who is also hitting well).

When Montero comes back, Lake can go down with Schwarber playing some OF and catching. In a perfect world, Baez replaces Herrera sooner rather than later.

cubs seem to not be linked to c.hamels going into this week, unlike last week and before. there's a lot more SD noise...i'm still putting my money on a.cashner coming back to the cubs.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

  • Dolorous Jon Lester (view)

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
