Beeler, the Cubs 26th man, went 0-2 in 2 starts last season (11 IP, 4 R, 10 H, 7 BBs). The chances he makes it through the third inning are pretty slim.

This is Cooney’s third start in the bigs and his first on the road. He gave up 3 ER in 2.1 innings against PHI in April and went 6 innings (2 ER) against SD last Thursday.

AZ Phil: I just read that German Gonzalez was claimed by COL after he was DFA and there doesn't seem to be any compensation... Why is it that sometimes players are traded after DFA (Like Rafeal Lopez or when Cubs acquired Jacob Turner last year) and some are just flat out claimed for free??

CUBBIES 4 EVER: When a player is Designated for Assignment, the player's club has ten days to either trade the player to another MLB club (trade assignment), send the player outright to the minors (outright assignment), or give the player his Unconditional Release.

NOTE: During Spring Training and during the MLB regular season, a designated player can be returned to the 40-man roster and optioned to the minors (optional assignment) if the player was not replaced on the club's MLB 40-man roster by another player while he was Designated for Assignment. This happens when a club needs to secure Optional Assignment Waivers before a player can be optioned to the minors, and since it takes two days to get a player through waivers, the player is Designated for Assignment and then placed on Optional Assignment Waivers (which are revocvable if a claim is made the first time a player is placed on Optional Assignment Waivers in a given waiver peruiod), and then the player can be returned to the 40-man roster and optioned to the minors once Optional Assignment Waivers are secured.  

But neither Germen nor Lopez were Designated for Assignment so that they could be optioned to the minors (both were already on Optional Assignment to the minors when they were Designated for Assignment). 

The Cubs placed Gonzalez Germen on Outright Assignment Waivers after he was Designated for Assignment because they wanted to send Germen outright to the minors. (Germen was removed from the Cubs MLB 40-man roster by means of DFA last week to make room on the 40 for Taylor Teagarden). However, the Rockies put in a claim, and since Outright Assignment Waivers are always irrevocable, the Cubs could not withdraw the waiver request after the Rockies were awarded the claim.

But  the Rockies did NOT get Germen for free. The Rockies had to send $20,000 to the Cubs ($20,000 being the waiver price for most players, with $50,000 being the waiver price for Rule 5 draft picks and for Draft-Excluded players).

Rafael Lopez was Designated for Assignment to open up a slot on the 40-man roster for Donn Roach, and the Cubs almost certainly intended to outright Lopez to the minors if Outright Assignment Waivers could be secured (or if Lopez was claimed by another club, the Cubs would get $20,000 from the claiming club, as happened with Germen). 

But Lopez was traded before he was placed on Outright Assignment Waivers.

I would guess that the Angels probably contacted the Cubs after Lopez was Designated for Assignment, and told the Cubs that they would be be making a claim once Lopez was placed on Outright Assignment Waivers, but that they would prefer to acquire Lopez in a trade so that another club with a higher waiver claim priority could not put in a claim.  

Knowing that they were sure to lose Lopez off waivers anyway (to the Angels or to another club), the Cubs agreed to trade Lopez to the Angels.

The Cubs were clearly looking to acquire International Signing Bonus Pool (ISBP) Signing Bonus Values (SBV) from one or more clubs to help reduce their 2015-16 ISBP tax liability, and the Angels were willing to include one of their 2015-16 SBV slots in the trade for Lopez. The  Cubs also picked up LHP Manny Rondon (the Angels top 2014 DSL pitching prospect) in the deal, and apparently the Angels SBV slot plus Rondon had more value to the Cubs than the $20,000 waiver price.

Outfielders ?? The cubs are looking for left handed outfielders,I sure hope they look for one who can play center Dexter Fowler has not impressed me to much this year plus I do believe he will be a free agent. Internally A.Alcantaara could play center,Bryant ? Szuier maybe . Is Alcaantarra a possibility going forward or is there a possible trade.

Left-handed is Alcantara's weak side. My first choice is still Josh Reddick, who cannot play center, but I'd also be interested in seeing the Cubs go after Kevin Kiermaier now with Tampa swooning toward the periphery of the race. He hits righties well and plays brilliant defense. FWIW Cubs were linked to Will Venable and Gerardo Parra yesterday in an article.

Who was it we saw recently that was so good? I forgot but maybe it was Pederson in LA? Dude was under the ball before even the ball knew where it was going. Fowler doesn't track like that at all. Actually, not many do. I had high hopes for Fowler early but he's been a bit disappointing. He was never that great a fielder but i was hoping for a better bat. I wonder what would happen if he tried only hitting from the right side. Or is it too hard for these guys to make the adjustment mid stream?

Yes it was Pederson and man did you get it right -- he is a rare bird in the field. His instincts are ridiculous and so his break on the ball is a huge advantage. Fowler is okay, but if he doesn't light it up in the 2nd half maybe it's a good thing that we don't sign him and found this out now. Maddon thinks he's gonna be good, but that's his job to think that. Fowler apparently was almost an ivy leaguer and works hard. We'll see. AlsI Fowler had a couple huge HR early in the season from the left side if I remember correctly (Colorado game winner?). Anyway I'm not sold either. I hope they go another direction. That said if they keep him I wouldn't complain too much. He's serviceable.

Through his first 40 games Fowler had a line of 265/358/445 (803 OPS), with 7 2B, 5 HR, 31 R, and 10 SB. He was on pace for 40 SB, 20 HR, and 120 Runs. We all were happy with that. 

In the 41 games since then he has a line of 197/257/306 (563 OPS), with 6 2B, 3 HR, 21 RS, and 2 SB.

Interestingly, the percentage of his hits that have gone for extra bases has stayed almost exactly the same. But he's striking out a bit more (43 to 35), walking a bit less (14 to 20) and his BABIP is lower (.248 vs. .310) and of course he is running much less, partially attributed to the ankle injury in late June. So a bit of it is probably bad luck, but he just doesn't seem to be seeing the ball as well or opposing pitchers are exploiting a weakness now that they weren't earlier in the season.

CF seems to the the big question for next year. Might have to figure out where to play Javy (a good problem), I assume/hope they give Schwarber some time in LF at Iowa because he's not going to catch next year (Soler-Rizzo-Bryant-Schwarber...oh my), and another starting pitcher would be nice. But, they don't an internal solution in CF -- I know Almora was Theo's first #1 pick and he is supposed to be a great CF, but his offense hasn't developed yet -- so if they can get Fowler on a 3-year deal, it might be the way to go.

Well Fowler is majorly underperforming his career slash line so I'm going with slump he's going to pull out of and his defense to me has her perfectly acceptable and a lot better than people had been saying it was going to be. But yeah looking at career stats I don't see any reason to expect him not to hit better.

You would think the 'greatest fans in baseball' would be above blaming an umpire for their beloved Cardinals losing a game. I hate St. Louis, their mouth-breathing, inbreeding fans, wish them the worst life has to offer, and couldn't care less if they never win another game in baseball history. Grow up 90 miles from that cesspool a Cubs fan and you'll fully understand.

    Things I've been wrong about:

    -Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

    -I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

    -Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

    -I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

    -Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

    Things I got right so far:

    -Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

    -Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

    -Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

    -Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

    -Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

    It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

    The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

    cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

    oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

    i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

    he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

    CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately. 

    You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.  

    Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.
