It Just Takes One...

...lunkhead to ruin it for everybody.

So as I and many others guessed a few weeks back, there was going to be somebody that was going to throw all semblance of logic and reason out the window and not vote for Greg Maddux. And while there may be others, Ken Gurnick was the first vote identified as leaving Maddux off their ballot. In and of itself, this is hardly a big deal, I mean there are plenty of worthy Hall of Famers on this year's ballot and while I may question your sanity and lucidness for putting others ahead of Greg Maddux, with a limit of just 10 choices, maybe, just maybe you just ran out of room and figured Maddux will have 14 more years to get in.

Nah, Ken Gurnick isn't voting for Greg Maddux because, "those who played during the period of PED use, I won't vote for any of them."

He only put one name on his ballot and that's Jack Morris.

/Facepalm.

There are plenty of more talented writers that have already dissected Gurnick's one paragraph explanation of his vote. And the one major flaw in Gurnick's "reasoning" is that he has apparently cracked the code of exactly when the PED era began and ended and whatever that code is, it means despite the careers of Maddux and Morris overlapping over 9 seasons, one is clean and one is tainted.

By what I've gathered on Twitter so far, Gurnick seems like a good enough guy from other reporters that know him and in the end, Maddux will still get in this year and possibly still have the highest vote total of all-time. Unfortunately Gurnick will still get to vote next year and while there's an argument to be made that it's just one man's opinion, an opinion on the Hall of Fame with the gift of an actual ballot should be based on some facts, and it's hard to see which ones he used in this case.

No one is putting him on any All-Star teams, but he had a .222 BABIP last year that led to a 54 wRC+ and a 0.4 WAR. If he can get back to a normal BABIP, you're probably talking about a 1 to 1.5 WAR improvement which is definitely significant.

Well yes, and the ivy will be green by then, too. The pressure is on TheoCorp now, and after the Super 2 deadline, anyone who looks remotely ready gets their shot. The most likely candidate, as long as he doesn't bomb in Iowa, is Alcantara, and heylook!, there's no one within 100 miles blocking him there right now. The last few winters, it's been cheap sign-and-flip veterans. This winter, it's Jose Vera and a whole lot of open space to plant some kids.

I predict underwhelming improvement for the Chicago Cubs next year. No, Barney is not going to have some amazing regression to the mean. There are reasons, other than statistics, that Barney and Castro had put up weak numbers last season- That is, Barney is a mediocre player and Castro swings at shitty pitches. It's not all about the numbers. I realize I sound a bit like an old grumpy Cubs fan here, but I am excited about the next few years. I think the investment in the farm system will begin to percolate. It will be very interesting to see what comes out of it.

the article on Maddux you'll want to read today...

http://www.washingtonpost.com/sports/nationals/greg-maddux-a-hall-of-fa…

First, Maddux was convinced no hitter could tell the speed of a pitch with any meaningful accuracy.

~snip~

“You just can’t do it,” he said. Sometimes hitters can pick up differences in spin. They can identify pitches if there are different releases points or if a curveball starts with an upward hump as it leaves the pitcher’s hand. But if a pitcher can change speeds, every hitter is helpless, limited by human vision.

“Except,” Maddux said, “for that [expletive] Tony Gwynn.”

"“Greg was the only pitcher I’ve ever seen who never practiced from the wind-up between starts — only from the stretch,” Kasten said. “He said, ‘From the wind-up, I only try to keep the ball in the park. I’m good at that. But the only time I have to really pitch is from the stretch with men on base. So that’s all I practice.’” Kasten wondered, “Why hasn’t anyone else thought of that?”" Word.

These blog/rumor-era reporters like Ken Gurnick- I don't trust any of them.

I'm not sure if that was brilliant satire mocking Gurnick for blanketing everyone from 1995-2004 under one umbrella, and in turn blanketing him under all reporters that don't work for a "serious" news outlet or that you don't know that Gurnick has been around for a very long time, certainly preceding the "blog/rumor-era", which seems as nebulous as the "Steroid Era".

jeff kent at 15.2% is kinda a joke...it's not like the HOF is loaded with 2nd basemen. sure he wasn't a defensive superstar, but he was good enough to play there. it's not like he was the mike piazza of 2nd basemen.

rumor be that Tanaka has set up shop in Los Angeles, interested parties will have to fly to him.

dan le batard (the dude who "sold" his HOF vote to Deadspin) got his HOF vote taken away and banned from BBWAA for a year

[ ]

In reply to by JoePepitone

gregg doyel summed up the whole experiment well... "So in the end, what did Le Batard hurt? Himself, even if it doesn't take any imagination to envision some in the younger crowd -- meaning, people younger than me -- celebrating his vote as a victory for ironical hipsters and dimwitted bro's. Anarchy, bro. LOL!" ...mostly based upon Deadspin readers actually (shockingly, imo) putting together a rather respectable and non-controversial ballot in his name...Greg Maddux, Frank Thomas, Tom Glavine, Mike Piazza, Craig Biggio, Edgar Martinez, Jeff Bagwell, Roger Clemens, Barry Bonds and Curt Schilling. bonds is the only "really?" guy, but far from stunningly controversial.

Derrek Holland hurts knee in home accident, surgery will put him out until mid-season.

Could spur a few extra bucks for Tanaka...

In reply to by jacos

my favorite is jeff kent breaking his wrist while washing his truck. he had plenty of time to think of something good...and that's what he came up with. i guess it's better than "i broke my wrist doing wheelies on a highway with my motorcycle" though...which is what really happened.

"Bob Nightengale of USA Today reports that arbitrator Fredric Horowitz has ruled that Alex Rodriguez receive a 162-game suspension." ...and arod's gonna "fight in federal court" the decision.

[ ]

In reply to by crunch

arod has also stated he plans on showing up for and playing in spring training (allowed under the CBA, even if suspended in-season). that should be an interesting media circus if he insists on showing up. yanks have his loot off the books next year, but they owe him 3/61 after that (plus incentives...which he's 6HR away from starting). ken rosenthall on MLB Network says he's "talked to some lawyers" about the whole taking-it-up-in-court thing and he says no one believes it can go anywhere because the MLBPA + MLB both agreed to this process and that the arbitrator's decision is final.

Dylan Hernandez reporting that Yankees, Angels, and Dodgers are the finalists on Tanaka. Ho hum.

In reply to by Old and Blue

the cubs need to free up 40-60m from the payroll to build new non-pedestrian bridges filled with ads and paying lawyer fees for fighting the neighborhood and lobbying the city. they are counting so much on the youth movement bats. for the sake of the fans...and 2015...i hope this gamble works out. i don't see the cubs getting involved with h.ramirez, p.sandoval, or c.headley...which is about all that's worth mentioning in next year's FA bat class as impact players...and that's a kinda thin class to begin with.

[ ]

In reply to by crunch

Cause of course overspending in years and money on overpriced FAs isn't a gamble... You simultaneously repeatedly bash their plan and here admit the FAs out there suck. Instead of yet another sarcastic comment about their payroll how about you tell us how the Cubs should have spent their money in the past several years that would have allowed them to win a World Series.

[ ]

In reply to by johann

it's a joke about it with a legit comment afterwards on where it's going. some people don't buy into "you gotta spend it on something"...some do. this team hasn't cleared up a little loot...they've cleared up a ton of loot. jeff passan weighs in (from friday)...in a much harsher manner... http://sports.yahoo.com/news/no--29-cubs--cheap-club-looks-like-it-s-on… ...if you check twitter or some other blogs you'll see others besides the (seemingly) minority here who think that this team acting like vagrants and putting all their eggs in one basket with these kids is one hell of a risky gamble that is going to play itself out regardless of whether the cubs spend some the 30+ million they have free or not...one has nothing to do with the other. ...and this is a conservative 30+m...this is a market that could afford much more of a payroll commitment. it's double-"really?" when the hottest off-season news has revolved around fighting the city/neighborhood and all the renovations/advertising they're trying to add to the park rather than players. it should neither be shocking or upsetting at this point. this is yet another off-season where the fans know to expect failure before spring training has even begun. the 2015 FA bats are a very thin crop...if it doesn't come in-house for 2015 with the bats it's gonna take trades or yet another punt year. also, on a me-to-you point...how many times do we go through this? you've made the "you say all the FAs suck" (which isn't true)..."make me a list of World Series players to sign"..."your sarcasm/criticism-of-the-plan sucks"...statements many times and i've stated what i've written above many times. what's written above is what i'm trying to say...seriously...there is no list i'm hiding...or an alternate plan. I'M FINE WITH WHAT'S GOING ON WITH THE KIDS...SERIOUSLY...I UNDERSTAND IT...I "GET" IT. that said...we're near the end-game of the plan coming of age and there's money to spend...there's even more money to spend if the team wants to start acting like they're a team playing in chicago. spending money on a a couple guys when you have 30+m free'd up and could spend more when needed (and when that "tv money" comes in) doesn't mean all the kids and what they're doing suddenly goes in the toilet. what the kids are doing is nearly totally independent of what's being done with money. besides that, if LA/BOS/MIA/TOR/etc has taught up anything lately there's ways around being "stuck" with a contract unless the guy sucks, is injured, or has a no/limited-trade. ...also, btw...i still believe the cubs are in strong on tanaka and are going to throw serious loot at him whether he accepts it or not. i just hope tanaka is strong on chicago and/or the cubs don't get outbid. i don't think he'll make/break the club, especially in 2014, but well...gotta spend the loot on something.

1). Basically every team wanting to truly win it all gambles. Yes waiting for young players is a gamble. So is giving players long contracts, especially pitchers. Yankees gambled repeatedly with huge payrolls and expensive contracts and it hasn't paid off in years. Baseball is gambling and either play big or go home IMO. 2). We don't know their financial situation or if they're as flush with money as you say 3). If we assume they do have lots of money, you keep saying they have to spend it on something (as if it just goes away if they don't. It doesn't and can be spend in the future). Yet you never say who they should spend it on. You dismiss a lot of free agents but aren't ever willing to say "sign this guy." Who is out there you would have spent money on? If you buy into the plan, who out there would have made you excited to watch but wouldn't have crippled us years and money wise. There is no one I have seen to sign that would have made us a contender that wasn't commanding way too many years for way too much money and this team was far beyond one big contract to become successful. 4). This team has spent money and not just on ads. It spent it on revamping the minor league facilities, on those international players. Things that will help us be good long term but don't show up in major league payroll. I personally hope they are stockpiling money so they overspend on FAs in a year or two. I don't want to see a couple feel good signings that won't actually accomplish anything but waste some money when it's pointless to spend.

In reply to by johann

"Yet you never say who they should spend it on." this doesn't matter... sign choo. sign cano. sign ellsbury. sign tanaka. sign whoever. act like billionaire owners and sign cano and choo....then sign tanaka on top of that. will any of them be a good deal? no. are FA signings of impact players ever a good deal? very rarely. you don't look for deals there. you look for deals on support, short reclamation projects, locking up youth in-house early, etc. the youth movement is supposed to be damn close. it's supposed to be peeking in next year and trickling in steady 2015+. you want to gamble one way. i want to gamble another way. big deal. it shouldn't upset you that someone wants to go about this in a more diverse way...especially when spending money on a free agent has pretty much 0 impact on developing youth unless losing for draft picks is something you find desirable as an on-going "solution" even though we're about to get the 4th year in a row of mega-low draft picks...and it's shaping up to add a 5th. the core is there...now work it. they've sunk 13m into a wasted e.jackson year...and there's looking to be another wasted 13m e.jackson year this coming year. it's not like they're totally opposed to spending money when it's available even if it means sucking up a little bit now for benefit later. it's looking a lot like they're sinking 26m into 2 wasted years of e.jackson hoping for some upside on the last 2 years and 26m when (f'n hopefully) they're done playing small market team. "I personally hope they are stockpiling money so they overspend on FAs in a year or two." ...yeah, that's what the "next year's FA bats are lacking" part of my post above talked about...and the "hope the youth bats they're counting on deliver" part is about. if they're looking to overspend on FA's next year then they better need only pitching because there's plenty of it...not much in the way of bats except some 3rd basemen and h.ramirez 3rd/SS. there's a lot...a whole lot...riding on the crop of bats they've collected being ready to deliver. also, while hoping they're stockpiling money is neat to hope for...myself...i seriously doubt we're seeing mid-season shaving of double-digit millions and low payrolls in preparation for fun time spending on instant 150+ million payrolls.

In reply to by johann

That's the problem, right? The free agency system has become absolutely absurd. Tanaka hasn't even pitched one day in the majors and he's about to sign a contract for $100 million+ and God knows how many years. I'm glad the Cubs were in on that, but that could also end up being a disaster for the Dodgers (I'm kinda assuming he's going to L.A). Shin-Soo Choo is going to be 38 by the end of his contract, and he's not a power guy. In four years we're going to be reading about how Texas is trying to dump his contract. As a Cubs fan I find all of this very frustrating because I want the Cubs to sign a free agent to steady the ship a bit, but who? This team could really use a veteran clubhouse leader, and they're just not going to get it. I'd like TheoCorp to hurry the hell up, somehow (but don't ask me how), and it does bother me some now that some in the press are now starting to ask "IF" the Cubs will compete in 2015. In my mind, Theo is paid big bucks to figure all this impossible stuff out, and not competing in 2015 seems pretty unacceptable to me. Having said that, it's kind of hard to criticize their approach. It's the only viable one there is. But it's maddening to think we have to watch another crap team next year. But, fuck it, maybe Rizzo and Castro will turn it around and they'll be at least slightly watchable, and maybe Baez will force their hand, too.

[ ]

In reply to by Old and Blue

honestly, especially given what theo's done in BOS with spending money...i don't think him or jed are the problem...nor do i think they're saving up in some piggy bank for some breakout reason to spend loot. they gave e.jackson 4/52 knowing the team wasn't going to be 2013 ready or (as it now seems) 2014 ready. the cubs have billionaire owners and no issues with revenue or profits on the team level..

jeremy guthrie...team player... "The Royals have reworked their contract with Jeremy Guthrie, adding a $10 million mutual option for 2016. Guthrie will make $8 million in 2014 rather than $11 million and his new mutual option will include a $3.2 million buyout. It's the same amount of guaranteed money as the originally-agreed-to deal and clears some room in the Royals' budget to make more upgrades this winter." also, from the department of same-as-it-ever-was... "Patrick Mooney of CSN Chicago reports that the Cubs and Jeff Samardzija are still very far apart on a potential contract extension."

@DavidWaldstein

Consensus in Japan right now is that Yankees and Dodgers are favorites on Tanaka and word is his wife prefers to be on West Coast.

"The Cubs say the mascot will not be on top of the dugout between innings, tossing T-shirts or hot dogs into the stands, and it won't disrupt the game. Instead, Clark will greet fans as they enter Wrigley Field, and also stop by the ballpark's "First Timers Booth" to welcome new guests. On family Sundays, the mascot will help kids run the bases after the game." ...at least that's a positive. i was not looking forward to seeing a costumed version of that running around the park.

slow news day obviously because the Internet is just piling on the Cubs now...

There was something that it would be at the ballpark, but I presume tucked away under the grandstands for kids to visit. For the most part it'll probably just being visiting sick kids in the hospital, so don't see the reason for the angst.

Could put some pants on it though...

based on the backlash from rolling out "clark"...teams from here on out should wait to unveil a new mascot in a year where there's actually things going on in your team's offseason other than plans for more ad space in/around the park, mega screen television scoreboards, fighting with the neighborhood/city, and a $4m low-tier closer is your team's #1 addition when there's less than a month before pitchers/catchers report. it's getting a little silly/rage/hopelessness out there on the innerwebs. warning, stay away from twitter searches on the subject...or venture into it if you can ignore the rage/hopelessness and enjoy the jokes. an otherwise non-newsworthy/non-issue thing has blown up. deadspin already has 2 articles about it...including a contest to "do something horrible" to the new mascot. teams roll out lame mascots all the time (some teams have multiple mascots, many of which their own fans don't find out until way later) and stuff like this doesn't happen.

ex-Cub, Thomas Neal signs with the Reds, to a minor league deal with a spring invite. He was my all time favorite Cub. Well, maybe not all time. Well, maybe not favorite.

Interesting comment posted over on the Cubs Den about how the sale of the Cubs by Zell to the Ricketts is restricting the Cubs' spending. Basically, Zell was trying to avoid taxes by retaining a 5% share in the Cubs and requiring the Ricketts' purchase to be financed by debt. I've heard bits and pieces of this before, but this guy lays out some specifics in a much more understandable manner than I've heard so far. Here's the comment: "The payroll had to come down to comply with the CBA debt service rules. The tax-avoiding leveraged partnership Zell insisted on left the team with over $700 million in debt according to The Tribune Company's audited financial statements. The team's debt can not exceed 8 times EBITDA (earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation & amortization). Since the Ricketts family took over, the Cubs have had turn a profit of at least $87.5 million each and every year to comply with the CBA. The Cubs payroll was not constrained by debt concerns prior to the "sale" to the Ricketts family. It should be a surprise to no one that payroll would have to significantly decline to meet the CBA requirement, especially with new revenue streams still on hold. The leveraged partnership has to run at least 7 years for Zell's tax-avoidance scheme to have any chance of succeeding in tax court, as the IRS has already began auditing Zell's Cubs & Newsday transactions. That would take us until Oct. 27, 2016 when the debt could be paid down/off without generating a taxable event for The Tribune Company. I believe we need to wait until the Ricketts family has complete autonomy while running the team before we can fairly judge them with regards to being cheap." A later comment adds: "When Zell took over The Tribune Company and tried to make it a not-for-profit entity in form, if not by name, by turning it into a S-Corporation owned entirely by its ESOP, MLB had little say in how Zell constructed the deal structure of The Tribune Company's divestiture of the Cubs. MLB would have a say in the potential new owners, but if Zell was determined to construct the "sale" in a manner which would avoid the Built-In-Gains Tax resulting from the conversion to a S-Corporation, how could MLB make him structure the deal in any other way. I really think Sam Zell did more to hurt the Cubs in less two years than anyone realizes. The financial statements for The Tribune Company can be found at: http://www.tribune.com/media/pdf/2012%20Consolidated%20Financial%20Stat… Look closely at Note 5 and Note 9 to truly get verification of my assertions. I have no inside information as to figures for the current operation of the Cubs, but I think it can be reasonably concluded that the current financial restraint can be attributed to the leveraged partnership deal structure." The comments are by a guy whose handle is "rdacpa" and about a third of the page down on the article on this page: http://www.chicagonow.com/cubs-den/2014/01/thoughts-on-passans-article-…

In reply to by JoePepitone

So basically, the bottom line on all of this is that the Ricketts family's hands are tied by the terms of the sale to the Tribune Co. until Oct. 27, 2016. Until then, they have carry a large amount of debt financing and they will need additional revenue streams if they wish to spend more as a ratio to that debt. After Oct. 27, 2016, they can pay off that debt if they wish and be much more free to spend money on major league payroll, etc. (because they would no longer need to offset the high debt with higher profits, per the CBA debt rules).

New term? Clarkery. from todays Sun Times:
Clark still was trying to figure out how to respond to his ‘‘fans’’ via social media. “Still figryuing out how 2 tyype with these big pawz. Will gett lessons for @Cubs. Come back soon!!” Clark tweeted. ‘‘Just find the L key,” tweeted @LarryVonKurtze.
http://www.suntimes.com/sports/24941766-573/cub-or-flub-meet-teams-firs…

I hope the Cubs sign Nyjer Morgan to a one year deal. If this team is going to suck balls, at least give me a guy with a split personality to watch.

He's the guy that used to play 3rd for the Yankees, right? Seriously, the death threats thing, if true, is pretty f'king serious. I hope they get to the bottom of that and put somebody in jail for it if it's true. Also, number 8 is very interesting and says something important about how us silly humans try to justify our actions- no matter how wrong they are.

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.

There are two clear "logjams" in the Cubs minor league pipeline at the present time, namely AA outfielders (K. Alcantara, C. Franklin, Roederer, Pagan, Pinango, Beesley, and Nwogu) and Hi-A infielders (J. Rojas, P. Ramirez, Howard, R. Morel, Pertuz, R. Garcia, and Spence, although Morel has been getting a lot of reps in the outfield in addition to infield). So it is possible that you might see a trade involving one of the extra outfielders at AA and/or one of the extra infielders at Hi-A in the next few days.

18-year old SS Jefferson Rojas almost made the AA Tennessee Opening Day roster, and he is a legit shortstop, so I would expect him to be an MLB Top 100 prospect by mid-season.

Among the relievers in the system, I expect RHRP Hunter Bigge at AAA Iowa and RHRP Ty Johnson at South Bend to have breakout seasons on 2024, and among the starters I see LHP Drew Gray and RHP Will Sanders at South Bend and RHP Naz Mule at ACL Cubs as the guys who will make the biggest splash. Also, Jaxon Wiggins is throwing bullpen sides, so once he is ready for game action he could be making an impact at Myrtle Beach by June.

I expect OF Christian Franklin to have a breakout season at AA Tennessee in 2024. In another organization that doesn't have PCA, Caissie, K. Alcantara, and Canario in their system, C. Franklin would be a Top 10 prospect.
