The Cardinals are using my last Cub brain cell as a punching bag.

It's just that time of year, I guess.
When I'm forced to watch guys in red hats run around on a baseball diamond laughing and hugging each other.
Celebrating another victory.
I'm tired of looking at their organization and thinking man, those guys sure know how to run things.
But... helpless, you know?
At least for now.
Or another year.
Or so.
Whatever man.
I don't know aobut you but I'm all about the Oakland Athletics now and hoping Billy Beane can get that ring.

Go A's!

And Bears.

Comments

I hope you saw my post of a couple days ago regarding these same red scourge baseball players. Nicely done, and a very sad, last cell at that.

Don't be too shocked if the Bears lose, CBlue. It isn't going to take much longer for teams to figure out that all they have to do to beat them is protect the ball. Well, N.O. figured it last week. The Giants may tonight. Teams are moving the ball up and down the field pretty easily so far. Please let me be wrong. It does help to see Jeffery emerge as a playmaker. If Martellus Bennet (sp?) could get healthy and Marshall is on all cylinders, and they Faulk Forte and Cutler doesn't have a turnoverpalooza, they could keep up. Damn, that's a lot of IFs.

As we discussed and agreed - without a pass rush, we need to temper our overall enthusiasm (unless they outscore their opponents with defenses similar to theirs). It would be nice for Shame on you Shane to make one tackle - other than piling on a pile after a runner is down already. To date, this draft pick is equaling Angelo's 1st round turds.

Yeah, but Long has been so magnificent it sort of makes up for it, and Jeffry from last year's draft has been nice and still has lots of upside. I assume you're referring to Shea Mcwhatever, which really was a head scratcher at the time, and yup, he's done nothing. Basically, last night sort of proved us right - NYG couldn't protect the ball, and they lost. Moved the ball up and down at will, like everyone else is doing. I wasn't able to watch every down last night and couldn't really watch closely but I DVRed and will watch tonight, but I'm assuming Peppers is still not looking great. I really hope he's just hurt a bit and not just feeling the effects of age. They miss Melton, too, dammit. I am not as high on Melton as some are, but he's still a force in there and they haven't plugged the hole.

Yes - Shea Mc Whatever. He finally got his 1st or 2nd tackle this year - in 6 games. So - I suppose that trading the Boise Flash is too late this year. Maybe they can put something together during the bye. To get deep into the post-season, they are really doing to need a DT. I hope Peppers has something going on that we don't know about. But I fear it is your latter concern - he too old/worn now. He does get held on every play, but don't most of them?

[ ]

In reply to by The E-Man

Yeah, he gets held but he's always been held and worked through it. Now they've lost Williams, a not dominant linebacker but still yet another starter on defense going down. Bostic is going to have to prove his draftworthiness very quickly. No matter, though, Green Bay is going to score on every drive in the next game.

Almora went 2-5 including a 3 rbi riple Solar Sox top 9th: Matt Skole walks. Max Muncy singles on a soft line drive to center fielder James Ramsey. Matt Skole to 2nd. David Freitas singles on a line drive to center fielder James Ramsey. Matt Skole to 3rd. Max Muncy to 2nd. Albert Almora triples (1) on a line drive to center fielder James Ramsey. Matt Skole scores. Max Muncy scores. David Freitas scores.

chuckle...
They are a church casserole made out of cream of mushroom soup and Minute Rice.

pretty much feels like must-win games for the Bears the next 2 weeks with the rest of the schedule

Giants, @ Redskins then bye week

then

@ Packers, vs. Lions, vs. Ravens, @ Rams, @ Vikings, vs. Cowboys, @ Browns, @ Eagles, vs. Packers

hopefully go 5-4 in that stretch and 10-6 on the season.

mark derosa's been doing a bit of work on he MLB Network the past few days...very well. he's really fluid, fast, speaks well, etc...he's cut out for doing mic work.

GOD DAMN Does This Bears D-Line SUCK ASS!!!! "Cover 2" is WITHOUT COVERAGE WHEN ITS MINUS A FUCKING PASS RUSH!!

"FOX Sports reports that the Mariners recently contacted Lou Pinella regarding their managerial opening, but the 70-year-old told them he wasn't interested." he's doing it wrong...first you take the job, then you decide you're not interested part of the way through it. lou's losing his edge.

LAD (216m) vs STL (116m) BOS (159m) vs DET (149m) dat loot... CHC 104m, btw...of which 10m-ish was shed via trade. glad/amazed they shifted s.harriston...and "giving" away dejesus saved a little loot + 1.5m owed on a buyout next year.

"J.C. Boscan has elected free agency." catcher need gets a little greater...though nothing of value was lost.

Informal fan poll: 1. Which prospect in the Cubs system are you most excited about? 2. From most exciting prospect to least exciting, rank Almora, Baez, Bryant, and Soler.

[ ]

In reply to by John Beasley

1. Bryant. Almora is close, but Bryant's skill set is pretty unique, and he sure feels like an MLB regular in his absolute floor. I know he hasn't done it in the upper levels yet, but the progression just since June has been amazing. 2. Bryant, Almora, Baez, Soler

[ ]

In reply to by John Beasley

1. Baez is the obvious choice. Bat speed, position scarcity, and track record in the minors. That said, Bryant is pretty exciting, and I like the idea of what Soler brings to the table. 2. Baez, Bryant, Soler, Almora. I'm probably low on Almora, and things might be different if I watched him play. Right now I see an extremely aggressive hitter who lives on contact and doesn't bring elite speed or power with him. That would make him a young Reed Johnson or something along those lines. Of course, I'm probably wrong--all the scouts and bloggers seem to love him.

In reply to by John Beasley

1- bryant 2- bryant, baez, almora, soler...though i believe there's a bit of a drop between bryant and baez. i view bryant as a potential all-star...a strong one. baez has exciting power, but i'm not sold on his D or his avg/ob% outlook. i like almora and think he'll march through the system, but once he lands in the bigs i don't see him as a very exciting player even though he'll probably be a solid and consistent contributor. i don't know what to think of soler at this point, though i do believe he could be a more important contributor than almora if he keeps his pace and his power improves.

In reply to by crunch

btw...i think when lists come out this year baez will rank above bryant...both for the fact he's doing it at AA along with the fact he's showing power at SS. i just don't know if baez will be able to stick at SS...too early to tell, but he took a step backwards this past season. i think bryant will be knocking on the door of taking over 3rd for the big club in 2015...and i liken him to e.longoria...which may be a bit generous, but i don't believe it to be too far off.

Carlos Marmol added to the Dodger NLCS roster. Ex-Cub factor comes into play St.L: Zero ex-cubs LA: 2 (if you count Nolasco as an ex-cub) Cardinals playing it smart. Yeech.

"Kyle McClellan has elected free agency." ...countdown til he's a cub begins.../rumor /speculation

either the crowd mics are turned down or this is one hell of a mostly-quiet STL crowd tonight.

R/L matchups are neat and all...but using n.punto as your PH choice with men on 1st/2nd and 2 outs is kinda...wut. besides, s.van slyke hits righties and lefties rather equally, if not spectacularly...and is at least capable of a scoring a man from 2nd. hell, why wasn't punto used as a pinch runner on 3rd after m.ellis tripled with 1 out? meh...

So, let’s do a little war gaming. Taillon is back for tonight’s game. He pitched two rehab games, just a few innings each, and not especially sharp. Let’s face it, he hasn’t been lights out since the Cubs gave him the big contract. In other words, as flat out bad as Hendricks has been, the chances of Taillon being the savior don’t look exactly promising.

If Taillon is equally ineffective or perhaps even worse, what’s the next move? Winning teams can often find a way to work around a dud fifth starter - kinda. Two dud starters make things much more difficult.

I believe the biggest reason for the recent bullpen moves was dissatisfaction with the recent blowing of big leads and the recognition that the bullpen wasn’t all it was thought to be. In other words, they are exploring alternate options and configurations. If similar juggling becomes necessary (even more so than it already is), what kind of reasonable maneuvering do we think could be explored?

Cubdom needs to prepare themselves for Wicks to be sent to Iowa for Taillon to come up.
Ben Brown has 4 appearances. Wicks has 4 appearances.
Ben has 16.1 IP.  Wicks has 17 IP
Ben was a 1.1 WHIP.  Wicks has a 1.7 WHIP. Wicks does have significantly more SOs.
    Ben has been better, though.
I love Wicks. I think he's a fighter and his stuff has improved.
But, Jed isn't ditching Hendricks just yet. He should. But he won't.
Hendricks should go to the IL and Taillon-Imanaga-Assad-Wicks-Brown should be the rotation.
    Wont' happen though.

    AZ Phil,
Did you agree with the demotion of Luke Little? He'd been pretty good up until the AZ/wild pitch appearance. I know that can't jettison Smyly (just yet) so they didn't need another LHRP. Especially with Leiter effectively being a LHRP. I still thought he deserved to stay. It's not permanent. He'll be back. Lots of moves to come with Taillon, Steele and other guys coming and going.

Also, do you see Hodge being able to "control/command" his stuff to get a chance this year?
Is Arias better than Hodge?   Thanks

just waiting to hear patrick wisdom and masterboney are spotted at the airport going in opposite directions...

aj puk going for the marlins (lefty)...gotta imagine we'll see wisdom in the lineup.

someone has to make room for taillon, too.

  • crunch (view)

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

  • Eric S (view)

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

  • Eric S (view)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

  • crunch (view)

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.
