Raley & Golden Shine at Fitch Park

Brooks Raley threw six innings of three-hit one-run ball and Reggie Golden belted a two-run double, as the Boise/Mesa Cubs (Extended Spring Training) edged the Iowa Cubs 2-1 in an intrasquad game this morning at Fitch Park Field #3 in Mesa, AZ.

The game was halted after 6-1/2 innings.

The Iowa Cubs are still in Mesa (and will be until Wednesday), because they open the season on Thursday night at Albuquerque, and will not be flying to Des Moines until the end of their road trip (Albuquerque & Round Rock).

Raley pitched for the Boise/Mesa squad so that he could face the AAA Iowa Cubs lineup, and the Boise/Mesa pitchers threw for the Iowa Cubs and faced the Boise/Mesa hitters. Dillon Maples was very impressive, throwing 2.1 IP of no-hit ball with three strikeouts.

Iowa Cubs catcher J. C. Boscan, who spent Spring Training as an extra catcher in big league camp with the Chicago Cubs, got four AB in today's intrasquad game, batting third for Boise/Mesa in each of the first four innings. He got two hits (both singles), and was Raley's catcher for all six innings. (Justin Marra was the catcher for the Boise//Mesa pitchers, so he played for Iowa).

Ian Stewart (on the Cubs 15-day DL with a quad injury) took a lengthy BP session after the intrasquad game and hit the ball very well. .

In Cubs minor league roster news, Kane County INF Wes Darvill has been promoted to AAA Iowa, to provide an extra back-up middle-infielder while Alberto Gonzalez is with the Cubs. Also, 2B Roni Torreyes has been demoted from Daytona to Extended Spring Training. He's not injured (he's been playing regularly throughout Minor League Camp, and he played the entire game today), so there must be some other issue involved.

Also, RHP Rob Whitenack has been Designated for Assignment to make room for INF Alberto Gonzalez on the Cubs MLB 40-man roster. Whitenack was added to the 40-man roster after last season, but he has struggled with his control and was unable to elevate the velocity on his fastball throughout Spring Training. If he clears waivers, I would expect him to be assigned to Extended Spring Training.

RHP Carlos Martinez pitched in relief today. Martinez had been absent from Minor League Camp for about ten days and I was unable to determine his roster status or whereabouts, but I can now report that he has been assigned to Extended Spring Training.

However, it would appear that IF-OF Bobby Buckner (Bill Buckner's son), OF James Hill (Billy Williams' grandson), and C-OF Rony Rodriguez (somebody's son, nephew, brother, and/or cousin) have been released, although that cannot be confirmed at this time.

Here is the box scores from the game:

Good news! And the Great One! That's a good day.

ESPN has evidently decided to leave the "strike zone" graphic up full time. this is a new era of annoying televised baseball. -edit- okay...into the middle of the bottom 3rd it seems they're done with that "experimental television" -edit- and it's back...i guess they're gonna do it for some ABs and not for others...for no real reason...whatever also, it's really weird seeing r.sandberg in a phillies uniform

11pm...watching games that count from the west coast...i still miss mark grace in ARZ's booth...and oddly d.sutton...and it's weird yet familiar hearing bob...

PHIL: Thanks for the eye-witness report. Nice to hear about Raley's nice work against the Jr. Circuit. Cubs need to hire him a personal "Yips Coach" as his pattern is soiling himself facing MLB players. Maybe he'll figure it out this year? He'll be 25 in June.

Raley had a quality start at home against Cincinnati last August, a win the following week at Cincinnati in which he gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs in 5.1 innings, and another five-inning stint on 8/25 in which he yielded 5 hits and 2 runs. That's three out of his five starts. Define yips.

You looked at ALL his starts? A WHIP of 1.80? BABIP of .321? OBP of .383, He's not missing any bats. He coupdn't get out of the 4th inning in one of the games with a 15.75 ERA. His first start. That would define the YIPS. Against the mighty Pads. 2nd game? 6 inn. 3 earned. Not bad. 3rd and 4th start were decent and he got his one win. The 5th start 10 hits and 7 runs. So, three out of 5 were decent. Still, Yips and blech. Hey, maybe he'll prove to be useful? The Cubs sure could use that!

masterboney is a luxury on a team that has multiple, capable options for 2nd, SS, and 3rd without him around.  i don't hate the guy, but if madrigal is sticking around then masterboney is expendable.

I THINK I agree with that decision. They committed to Wicks as a starter and, while he hasn’t been stellar I don’t think he’s been bad enough to undo that commitment.

That said, Wesneski’s performance last night dictates he be the next righty up.

Quite the dilemma. They have many good options, particularly in relief, but not many great ones. And complicating the situation is that the pitchers being paid the most are by and large performing the worst - or in Taillon’s case, at least to this point, not at all.

    Wesneski and Mastrobuoni to Iowa

    Taillon and Wisdom up

Wesneski can't pitch for a couple of days after the 4 IP from last night. But Jed picked Wicks over Wesneski.

also, wisdom and taillon are both in chicago.

Tonight’s game postponed. Split games on Saturday.

cubs getting crazy good at not having player moves leak.

taillon we 100% know is pitching tonight.  who he's replacing and any additional moves are unknown as far as i can tell.

p.wisdom was not in today's lineup in iowa (rained out) and he was removed from the game last night mid-game, but not for injury.  good bet he's with the team in the bigs, too.

A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!
