Who have you been most impressed with as far as pitchers go? Pugliese's line is phenomenal. ================================= IGGY: Other than Rob Whitenack (who was here on a rehab after undergoiing TJS last June), James Pugliese and Jose Arias have been the two most-impressive pitching prospects I've seen so far. Pugliese throws with an over-the-top delivery like Josh Collmenter of the D'backs, except Pugliese throws harder. Pugliese's fastball normally sits in the low 90's but he has touched 94-95 MPH a few times when working out of the pen (Collmenter throws in the upper 80's) and his breaking ball and change-up are looking good, too. Pugliese has been used as both a starter and as a late-inning reliever at EXST, so there is some flexibility there with him as he moves forward. Arias throws 92-94 and has a plus-breaking ball, but his change-up needs refinement (he tips it by slowing down his motion), so he sometimes has trouble with LH hitters. He is a big dude (6'5 225) and should have the stamina to remain a starting pitcher as he moves up the pipeline. He threw 73-pitches in his last outing on Tuesday (intrasquad game), and most of the younger pitchers down here can't do that. One other pitcher I'll mention is RHP Arturo Maltos-Garcia, the Cubs 2011 30th round draft pick out of Lamar CC in Colorado. AMG blew out his elbow in a JUCO tournament game a year ago and had TJS, but the Cubs drafted him and signed him anyway. He is just now seeing game action, and in his last outing (intrasquad game in Thursday) he finally showed off his "hammer-curve," and it is nasty. It drops like a rock. He will be a pitcher to watch next season.

Although the stats don't count, the EXST Cubs played intrasquad games on Thursday and Friday. The position players have apparently been split into "Boise" and "AZL Cubs" squads, probably still subject to change. There did not appear to be any significance as far as which pitchers pitched for which squad. 2B Gioakar Amaya (who would have played for the Boise squad) can hit but can't run (although he is expected back in the lineup next week), so he and player-coach David Macias hit against RHP Justin Berg (September 2011 TJS rehab) in a 30-pitch "live" BP session on Field #2 on Friday while the others were playing in the intrasquad game on Field #3. Amaya then ran some home-to-1st sprints and looked fine. As the result of Amaya not being available for game action, Brian Inoa and Danny Lockhart played 2B for the Boise squad (Inoa on Thursday and Lockhart on Friday), although they both appear to be with the AZL Cubs squad. As for the games... Wilson Contreras blasted a two-run HR, an RBI triple, and two singles, walked and drove-in four runs, and Xavier Batista had five hits and knocked-in two runs over the course of the two games for the Boise squad, while Shawon Dunston Jr singled, doubled, tripled, and walked, stole a base, scored two runs, and drove-in another run in a losing effort with the AZL Cubs on Friday after going 0-3 on Thursday. If Dunston indeed has been assigned to the AZL Cubs rather than to Boise, it can only be because the Cubs want both Dunston and Trey Martin to get regular playing time in CF, and Martin is the more-polished defender and base-runner of the two. The Cubs need to get a good read on Burke because he is eligible to be an MLB Rule 55 FA (so-called "six-year minor league free-agent") post-2012, and so he can walk away (and the Cubs get nothig in return) if he is not added to the 40-man roster by 5 PM on the 5th day following the conclusion of the World Series. Lefties like Burke don't grow on trees, so unless he suffers some sort of major catastrophic injury between now & then, it is hard to imagine the Cubs not adding him to their 40-man roster by the post-WS deadline. Getting added to the MLB 40-man roster means he would automatcially go to Spring Training with the big club next season, and at that point anything can happen. But all things being equal, I would expect him to be at AA Tennessee this time next year, pitching in front of his friends & family.

As for Kyler Burke, he would not be eligible for a 4th minor league option if he is added to the MLB 40-man roster post-2012. A player can only get a 4th minor league option if he has not completed five "full seasons" by the time he has used up his first three options. For the purposes of determining eligibility to receive a 4th minor league option, a "full season" is defined as spending at least 90 days on the Active List of an MLB and/or minor league team(s) in a given season, or at least 60 days on the Active List(s) followed by a DL assignment where the combination of the two equals at least 90 days. Burke accrued five "full seasons" 2007-11, so he is already ineligible for a 4th minor league option (not that he would actually ever have been eligible, because the earliest he would have needed a 4th option would have been the 2016 season). An example of a player who is (presently) eligible for a 4th minor league option is Rafael Dolis. Here's how & why: Dolis expended minor league options in 2010 and 2011 and he will use a third one this year, presuming he spends at least 20 days on Optional Assignment (he'll hit 20 days on June 16th). So ordinarily Dolis would be out of options come next season, but he will get a 4th minor league option because he will have accrued only four "full seasons" through the 2012 season. History: Dolis was signed by the Cubs as a 16-year old shortstop during the International Signing Period in August 2004, and he was "Signed for Future Service" (meaning he signed a 2005 contract) and so he was not active in 2004. Therefore he did not accrue a"full season" in 2004. He was converted to RHP at Extended Spring Training April-June and then spent the 2005 season on the AZL Cubs 60-day DL with a sore shoulder, so he did not accrue a "full season" that year, either. He spent the 2006 season at Extended Spring Training at Fitch Park April-June and then was on the AZL Cubs Active List June-August, but because time spent at Extended Spring Training doesn't count and because the AZL season only runs 60 days, he did not accrue a "full season" in 2006. He began the 2007 season at Peoria, but was placed on the DL with a sore elbow in May (before he had accrued 60 days) and then underwent TJS in July, so he did not accrue a "full season" in 2007. He spent the 2008 season on the Peoria 60-day DL rehabbing from the TJS at Fitch Park, so he did not accrue a "full season" in 2008. His first "full season" was in 2009 at Daytona, and he also accrued "full seasons" in 2010 and 2011, and he will in 2012, too. So that's only four "full seasons" through the 2012 season, meaningb he will get a 4th minor league option in 2013. However, if he is recalled prior to spending 20 days on Optional Asignment in 2012 and then is not sent back to the minors again this season, he will have used up only two minor league options through the 2012 season, and he would probably accrue five "full seasons" before he will get a chance to use his 4th minoir league option (in 2014). Or, if he is not recalled prior to June 16th and does use his third option this season, and then he accrues a "full season" in 2013 without using his 4th option (by spending the 2013 season on the Cubs 25-man roster), he loses the 4th option in 2014 because he will have accrued five "full seasons" through the 2013 season without yet having used his 4th minor league option. That exact same thing happened with Angel Guzman a few years ago. Like Dolis, Guzman spent several seasons in short-season leagues and/or on the DL with an asortment of elbow & shoulder surgeries, and it looked like he would get a 4th minor league option, but he accrued five "full seasons" prior to getting a chance to use it. Two others presently on the Cubs 40-man roster (OF Matt Szczur and LHP Gerardo Concepcion) are eligible for a 4th minor league option (as things stand now), presuming they do not accrue five "full seasons" prior to using the 4th option. BTW, there was a change in the 4th option rule that corresponded with the new CBA, but I don't know what that change is. It probably has to do with the new rule that requires clubs to sign first-year players to minor league contracts, where (perhaps) if a club adds such a player to its MLB 40-man roster prior to eligibility for the Rule 5 Draft (let's say), the player is not eligible for a 4th minor league option.

Iowa Cubs tee-ing off against Nashville this afternoon. BJax and Apodaca each have homered and Rizzo has 2 on the day to bring him up to 20 HRs on the not even halfway over season. 14-2 Iowa in the top of the 9th right now with MacDougal trying to end this one.

What's up? ================================ JUSTIN: Matt Spencer was converted to LHP at AZ Instructs last fall, and he was throwing 98 MPH gas at that time, altough he also had zero command and no secondary stuff. Right now he is throwing more strikes but still not enough to avoid issuing a lot of walks. He is virtualy unhittable at times, however, and his breaking ball is getting better, so I don't think the Cubs will release him anytime soon. I suspect the Cubs will move him quickly through the system (he might even skip Boise and go directly to Peoria) to see how he performs at the higher levels. If he can get it together, his future would be as a LOOGY. BTW, Spencer is eligible to be a 6Y minor league FA post-2013.

    A good rule of thumb is that if you trade a near-ready high ceiling prospect, you should get at least two far-away high ceiling prospects in return.  Like all rules-of-thumb, it depends upon the specific circumstances, but certainly, we weren't going to get Busch for either prospect alone.

    Right on schedule, just read an article in Baseball America entitled "10 MLB Prospects Outside The Top 100 Who Have Our Attention".  Zyhir Hope was one of the prospects featured. It stated that he's "one of the biggest arrow-up sleeper prospects in the lower levels right now."

     

    Not sharing to be negative about the trade, getting a top 100 prospect who is MLB ready should carry a heavy prospect cost.  But man, Dodger sure are good at identifying and developing young talent. Andrew Friedman seems to have successfully merged Ray's development with Yankees financial might to create a juggernaut of an organization.

    I suspect Brown will spend some time in the bullpen due to inning restrictions.  Pitched only 93 innings last year and career high is 104 innings in 2022.  I would expect them to be cautious with a young player with his injury history.

    I wanted Almonte gone last week, but that was before Merryweather went down and Little got demoted. Almonte in his last 5 appearances has gone 4.1 IP with no ER or Runs. NO hits, 3 BBs and 8 SO. He did hit 96 with his 2S FB in AZ on Tues.
    I don't see Jed waiving him when we have injuries all over and guys with options that can be sent down.
    I probably won't like the move Jed makes, but he can't play the "let's hope no one wants his 1.7mil remaining deal and we can hide him in Iowa" card.
    That's why I think the current Bullpen stays as is and Wicks goes to Iowa.
    I don't like that, but that's the fix I see.
    We'll find out soon enough!!!

    I suspect Counsell/Hottovy will use the piggy-back extensively, with Taillon and Hendricks pitching as the "pig" (and with a very short leash) and some combo of Wicks, Brown, and Wesneski (whichever two do not start) as the "backers."  

    Keep in mind that Keegan Thompson has a minor league option available, and if Yency Almonte is not outrighted by 4/26 he cannot be sent to the minors without his consent after that date. Almonte is out of minor league options, so I am talking about him getting outrighted to the minors if he is not claimed off waivers, and if he is claimed off waivers, the Cubs save the pro-rated portion of his $1.9M salary, which helps lower the Cubs 2024 AAV.

    Based on what Jed has done in the past, I’d say the plan is to

    -give Hendricks another few starts
    -give Taillon some runway ot get his season underway

    -Mix and match in the bullpen and see what sticks

    Jed usually doesn’t do a whole lot of waiver wire plays in-season, at least early in the season. He only reallly did that after he blew up the rosters in 21 and 22 because they needed bodies (guys like Schwindel, Fargas, etc).

    I think he’s a little handcuffed by a full 40 man in that he can’t really maneuver much with giving anyone showing ability at AAA (R Thompson/ Sanders/ Edwards etc). Brewer has the most tenuous grip there, and we will see what kind of chance he gets. Other than his spot, there isn’t a ton of 40 man wiggle room.

    I’m very curious to see what happens with Brown now that Taillon returns. Bullpen? Wicks to Iowa?

    Pro teams have to play their "big money" guys if they are healthy and not "locker room" issues.
    The Cubs wanted to deal JHey off well before they bought him out. They just didn't want to pay him to play for someone else for that long. Jed did give him 20+mil to play for LAD last yr.
    Jed might also let Kyle walk at some point this year. Similar scenario to JHey, except Jed thought Kyle was going to be good/solid in '24!!
    You'd think Smyly is in the same book as well. Same with Neris (he's a 1yr vet RP, so he's not really in this convo too much).
    That's ~35mil between those three and those three are going to get opportunities until at least late June) over younger guys even if their performance is "iffy".
    But, Jed is going to play Taillon a lot. They have to try and justify that contract and hope a veteran works out.
    So, Taillon, Imanaga, and Hendricks are locks for the rest of April and probably May.
    Assad, Brown and Wicks handle the last spots until Steele is ready.
    Now, you're question has real merit when Steele comes back. That will interesting if Brown is still good and Hendricks is still bad. But Taillon is entirely safe as long as he's healthy.

    And the bullpen moves were "money" based as well. Smyly has actually been okay. But he hasn't been clearly better than Little. Little had one bad outing. But Smyly makes 9mil. If they needed another RHRP and one of Little and Smyly had to go, it was going to Little. But that doesn't mean Smyly is one of the best 13 arms for the team.
