Game 30 Thread - Dempster vs. Delgado

Ryan Dempster, he of a 0.95 ERA on the season, goes tonight in search of his first win in his last 13 starts. That win was versus the Nationals last year on August 11th. It's his 5th start of this season and he hasn't given up an earned run in 14.1 straight innings.

No real news in Cubsland today. Cardenas is getting the start at second base and we're seeing Barney's playing time dwindling as of late. We'll see if the trend continues. Epstein had a little chat with the media today and is pleased with the Cubs play of late and of course of Bryan LaHair's.

"The results are probably not going to always be this 'Ruthian,' so to speak," he said. "But I think the quality of at-bats will remain consistent, and it's not a fluke. He's doing things the right way. He's recognizing pitches out of the pitcher's hand really early. He's letting the ball travel and get deep, and he's really short and compact to the ball.... He's going to go through slumps, but it's really encouraging, not just what he's doing, but how he's accomplishing it.

Another quote said the team has narrowed it's first round selection in the June draft to 10 players.

Wind blowing out to right as the Cubs go for three in a row tonight.

Jesus, enough of Kerry Freaking Wood. WTF? He wants to be an organizational mascot, fine, put him in the radio booth or something. But the dude is finished. Dear Dale--mopup duty only for #34. Thanks.

I'm not defending KW but it's only 6 outings. Games 1-2 were maximally ugly for both Wood and Marmol. Then he had 2 successful outings. Then he went on the DL for 2 weeks. So the last two outings were bad but his game vs the Dodgers was actually a win even though he gave up 2 runs. Tonight was bad but it's not enough to say he's done. My take is Sveum should have had someone else warming up when Wood came into the game tonight after a leadoff single to Bourne. Sveum didn't start warming up Camp until the damage was done by Uggla. I'd just have a quicker hook when Wood starts walking hitters like he did tonight and on opening day. Until he shows more consistency I don't think just letting him have the 8th inning without the option to go to quick backup is going to keep leading to pain. ======================= Here's the game by game for KW in 2012: Game 1: Opening Day, blown save for Dempster. Came in with 2 outs in the 8th and a 1-0 lead. 0.1 IP, 3 walks. Left game with a 1-1 score. Game 2: Took the loss, came in with a 4-2 lead to start the 8th. GO, K, HR (Espinosa), Single, Single. Then Marmol came in to torch the game. End result 5 run 8th and a 7-4 loss. Game 6: Dempster's lone loss of the season 2-1 to Brewers, Dempster had given up 2 run HR to Kottaras in the 7th. Wood's one really good outing. Pitched the 8th with 3 K's. Game 8: This was the Samardzija 9-0 lead that dissipated to 9-5. KW only pitched to one batter, bottom 8th after Russell got 2 outs around a double. (Got Furcal to GO 3U). Then 2 week DL stint Game 26: Comes in with a 5-2 lead in the 8th. Gives up 2 runs to the Dodgers in the 1st game of the series (Won 5-4). (GO, BB, Triple, SF, F9. Tonight: Enters game 1-1 in the 8th. 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 1K. (Single, BB, FC, BB, 2 run single, P02, Pickoff at 2nd).

Meh. Wood is hardly a big problem. I'll give him some more time before I start calling for his retirement. Don't see any reason he can't be as useful as anyone else currently in the bullpen right now.

I hope Cards management and their fans treat Willson with respect going forward. I'd be happy to still have him as a Cub. Heck, he'd even be our best DH option at this point.

    Hi Arizona Phil!

Exciting to see Naz Mule in box scores a few times. What's his stuff like now after the TJS?

    Mastrobuoni can't come back, yet

Wisdom does have an option left. He can hide in Iowa if Jed DFA's someone else

Does Brennan Davis get shown the door? I know it's too early for that, but these injuries are crunching the roster of a 12-7 team playoff demands and BDavis isn't going to help anytime soon.

Someone has to go to add Peralta. And Canario isn't going to get to play everyday regardless of RHers or LHers. Neither is Tauchman. Also don't see PCA getting a chance over Peralta.

    If Jed does those moves:

4 OF: Belli, Peralta, Canny, Tauch

    2 C: Gomes and Amaya

    2 DH: Cooper and Mervis

5 INF: Busch, Nico, Dansby, Morel, Madrigal

Little short on OF depth but two injuries will do that

I have had the pleasure of watching some of the young A's pitchers lately (first Joe Boyle the last day of Minor League Spring Training in March, and more recently Luis Morales last week and Steven Echavarria yesterday at Extended Spring Training), and it reminds me of the Miami Marlins a couple of years ago. A really nice collection of young pitchers. It will be interesting to see what the A's will get for two years of ex-Cub Paul Blackburn at the Trade Deadline (there should be a robust market for Blackburn).

    Good deal

    MB needs some talent infusion!

    Childersb3: Very possible. Suriel, too.

DJL: if a pitcher is recalled to be the 27th man for a doubleheader and then is optioned back to the minors the next day, the 15-day "clock" does NOT reset. The one day call-up for the doubleheader is treated like it never happened with respect to a pitcher having to spend at least 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled.

Probably the only reason David Peralta is still in the organization (he is at AAA Iowa) is to be available in case anything bad were to happen to Ian Happ (which it just did). So if Happ needs to go on the IL, the Cubs can select Peralta to play LF, DFA Wisdom (and hope he and what remains of his $2.725M salary gets claimed off waivers), and recall Mervis to platoon at DH with Cooper (with Canario / Tauchman sharing RF), at least until Suzuki and Happ are back...

i'd just like to take a moment to express to the world i'm still pissed willson contreras is not a cub when the pricetag was 5/87m (17.5m/yr).

it would be nice to have a legacy-type player to stick around, especially one with his leadership and the respect he gets from his peers.  cubs fans deserved more than 1 season of contreras + morel...that was gold.

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.
