Game 30 Thread - Dempster vs. Delgado

Ryan Dempster, he of a 0.95 ERA on the season, goes tonight in search of his first win in his last 13 starts. That win was versus the Nationals last year on August 11th. It's his 5th start of this season and he hasn't given up an earned run in 14.1 straight innings.

No real news in Cubsland today. Cardenas is getting the start at second base and we're seeing Barney's playing time dwindling as of late. We'll see if the trend continues. Epstein had a little chat with the media today and is pleased with the Cubs play of late and of course of Bryan LaHair's.

"The results are probably not going to always be this 'Ruthian,' so to speak," he said. "But I think the quality of at-bats will remain consistent, and it's not a fluke. He's doing things the right way. He's recognizing pitches out of the pitcher's hand really early. He's letting the ball travel and get deep, and he's really short and compact to the ball.... He's going to go through slumps, but it's really encouraging, not just what he's doing, but how he's accomplishing it.

Another quote said the team has narrowed it's first round selection in the June draft to 10 players.

Wind blowing out to right as the Cubs go for three in a row tonight.

@BruceMiles2112 Theo: Draft prep is "probably the most important thing we're doing right now, to be honest."

I'll be in parachat until around 8:30pm CST.

dumpster saves himself a broken arm/rib...nice glove.

Former Cub Josh Hamilton with 4 dongs tonite

Not being malicious here, but can we stop with calling Hamilton "former Cub?"

Im just glad reds are dumber than Cubs

tie in the 6th!

...and then kerry wood showed up.

3-1 ATL going to the middle 8th.

Nice pick-off of McCann though ... Good
execution with Castro

Anytime Kerry wants to make an announcement

second time in a cubs uniform he's thrown his glove into the stands...been a while since the last time, though.

Can theo accept as retirement? Or does he have to text front office?

Woody is a great dude. Terrific with raising money for worthwhile charities. A regular guy who drives a Toyota (literally).

I have enjoyed his career.

But - its time.

I wish i could beat the Josh Hamilton dead horse some more.

castro with a nice glove flip...awesome.

I-Cubs ahead, 9-1 in the 5th.

BJax, triple, 2 walks, 3 runs scored
Vitters, 3 run double
Rizzo, 3 run HR
Chris Rusin, cruisin'

Jesus, enough of Kerry Freaking Wood. WTF? He wants to be an organizational mascot, fine, put him in the radio booth or something. But the dude is finished. Dear Dale--mopup duty only for #34. Thanks.

So he's having some control issues and he's finished?

How's his stuff? His velocity? I didn't see the inning he pitched last night, so someone enlighten me.

Stuff and velocity were both good. He was topping out at 96 mph on his four-seam fastball and he had a couple of really nice-breaking 12-to-6 curve balls, one for a strike to Chipper, one for a ball to Jason Hayward. His big problem was his control, not his "stuff".

I agree - he did not remind me of a broken down Joe Borowski or Mark Prior. I think (much) better outings will be coming, hopefully soon.

I'm not defending KW but it's only 6 outings. Games 1-2 were maximally ugly for both Wood and Marmol. Then he had 2 successful outings. Then he went on the DL for 2 weeks. So the last two outings were bad but his game vs the Dodgers was actually a win even though he gave up 2 runs. Tonight was bad but it's not enough to say he's done. My take is Sveum should have had someone else warming up when Wood came into the game tonight after a leadoff single to Bourne. Sveum didn't start warming up Camp until the damage was done by Uggla. I'd just have a quicker hook when Wood starts walking hitters like he did tonight and on opening day. Until he shows more consistency I don't think just letting him have the 8th inning without the option to go to quick backup is going to keep leading to pain.
=======================
Here's the game by game for KW in 2012:

Game 1: Opening Day, blown save for Dempster. Came in with 2 outs in the 8th and a 1-0 lead. 0.1 IP, 3 walks. Left game with a 1-1 score.

Game 2: Took the loss, came in with a 4-2 lead to start the 8th. GO, K, HR (Espinosa), Single, Single. Then Marmol came in to torch the game. End result 5 run 8th and a 7-4 loss.

Game 6: Dempster's lone loss of the season 2-1 to Brewers, Dempster had given up 2 run HR to Kottaras in the 7th. Wood's one really good outing. Pitched the 8th with 3 K's.

Game 8: This was the Samardzija 9-0 lead that dissipated to 9-5. KW only pitched to one batter, bottom 8th after Russell got 2 outs around a double. (Got Furcal to GO 3U).

Then 2 week DL stint

Game 26: Comes in with a 5-2 lead in the 8th. Gives up 2 runs to the Dodgers in the 1st game of the series (Won 5-4). (GO, BB, Triple, SF, F9.

Tonight: Enters game 1-1 in the 8th. 2 hits, 2 runs, 2 walks, 1K. (Single, BB, FC, BB, 2 run single, P02, Pickoff at 2nd).

Meh. Wood is hardly a big problem. I'll give him some more time before I start calling for his retirement. Don't see any reason he can't be as useful as anyone else currently in the bullpen right now.

Now it's Iowa 13-1.

4 run 6th.

Rizzo 3 run HR. Vitters solo HR.

Rusin still in. Thru 5 IP, 3 hits, 1 HR, 1 run, 2 BB, 4K's.

Rizzo is so ready for the show. Time to show Fonzie the door and move LaHair out there to LF.

Rizzo hit two hr last night, start the Sori/lehair platoon

/by platoon I mean when lahair is tired play sori

  • Very nice. I saw him in Lansing in May. I'm still stunned that he hit a 400-foot foul ball onto Larch Street ... which is going the other way for a right-handed batter. It was perhaps the most amazing swing I've ever seen a minor league player take. I should also mention that it was about 40 degrees out at the time. Not that it's evidence of anything per se, but I feel his plate approach is way more advanced than Soler was at this stage in his development and that the comparisons aren't really fair to Jimenez. 50/50 chance I'll go to Midland tonight for the low-A debut of Oscar de la Cruz.

  • Eloy Jimenez grand slam tonight. Hoping Soler power returns and gets hot but future looks bright in the outfield regardless.

Finished the night 4-5, with two doubles - 32(!) on the season - along with the grand slam. Sick

  • Meanwhile, out West:

SF is 2-11 since the break, lead over LA is down to one game, and they are running out Cain and Peavy this weekend against the Nats. Challenging times by the Bay.

  • Thanks for the updates Phil. Too bad about Frazier.

  • The Cubs have released RHRP Scott Frazier (2013 7th round dfraft pick - Pepperdine).

A Cubs pitching coach told me in Spring Training 2014 that he thought Frazier had the best pure stuff in the organization. Absolutely electric fastball & breaking ball combo. Other pitchers would gather behind the screen just to watch him throw "live" BP. That's how amazing he was.

  • Got a chance to see Diamondbacks RHSP Zack Greinke (15-day DL - strained oblique) throw a rehab start at Sloan Park Friday night. Four of the first seven AZL Cubs hitters singled and the Cubs did score an unearned run in the bottom of the 1st inning, but then Greinke got serious and struck out five in a row.

    ZACK GREINKE: 3.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB, 5 K, 4/0 GO/AO, 49 pitches (34 strikes)

  • Have fun - It may be good for Arrieta to be facing a team that doesn't know him as well as the NL teams. A nice shutout would do wonders for his confidence. He is confident in public but baseball is hard and he could use a boost, I'm sure.

  • Me too. I'll be at the game tomorrow and would love to see Good Arrieta.

  • Last few games have been the April version of the Cubs that disappeared completely the past two months.
    Hope they can sustain it.

Looks like Mother Nature is trying to call this fight.

  • The key for Heyward's offense: get early leads. Heard a stat on Mike & Mike on the way to work that his avg/power much better this year when the Cubs have the lead. And true to form he gets the two run dinger with Cubs winning 3-0 ...

  • I'm sorry - I was probably not looking at the correct line, or spot, or...who knows!

I could blame it on the weed, but I stopped smoking many years ago.

Fortunately, I can rely on the rest of you sober and astute folks to bring the correct info forth.

  • Agreed. I was not including Fowler or Heyward.

I'm just not a fan of 2016 Coghlan.....
