Game 11 Thread - Dempster vs. Johnson

Always wise to bat three lefties in a row for the later innings. ~shrug~

great article. it's a bit sweeping, though not much. there is a scrutiny of the pen that's missing in some respects. to keep it recent...brian wilson. sergio romo, by virtue of numbers and effectiveness, should be the 100% no-doubt defacto closer, but the guy's arm is a lot more fragile that people might suspect. him going 2-3 in a row too often is something SF is looking to avoid because they think his arm would fall off. it's kinda similar to how k.wood wasn't being considered to full-time close when there was a c.marmol scare in spring. overall it's right on...imo, people should be looking for the $5-$7m type closers rather than the $10m+ ones...even if you're a big spending team. there's plenty of guys who can fill that role effectively while $10m contracts are still being shelled out.

Iowa puts up a 3 spot to start, with a lineup of: Campana 7, Jackson 8, Valbuena 6, Rizzo 3, Cardenas 4, Lalli 2, Sappelt 9, Vitters 5, Rusin 1. Rusin already has given 2 back and the first isn't over vs. Albuquerque Daytona down 7-5 in 7th vs. Dunedin, nothing new to report. Peoria down 5-2 in 5th to Cedar Rapids, Francescon goes 3.2 IP, 2 ER, 3 BB, 1 K. Pin-Chieh Chen with a triple.

this FLA feed is killing me (HD feed on EI)...it's been a 1 hour commercial inviting people to come out to the ballpark fighting with a 1 hour hour commercial for Fox Sports personalities + social media. in between it all they're occasionally talking about the game.

FS Marlins annouce crew. you can tell this program direction is coming from "someone" in the booth guiding the direction. they're doing tons of social media stuff, pimping the park, interviews with workers, interviews with their own FS staff, reading tweets about fluff...they've missed a few ABs while "reporters" were doing stories on things like the Fox Sports Girls at the park and the team shop. the "guest" is the vice president of something or other from the team who was one of the people who helped design the stadium (not kidding). supposedly a fan wanted more info on this important cog of the 2012 marlins.

bounces into a productive out...seemed more luck than purposeful. 2nd/3rd with 0 outs and bounces a 3-2 pitch to the second baseman to score a run and advance Castro to 3rd.

paid off today... Dempster throws away one for the marlins first run, Josh Johnson running. 1-1 in the 5th

DeJesus shows off his arm with a weak ass throw that can't nail the pitcher trying to score from 2nd. Do get Bonifacio in a rundown to end inning though. 2-1 Marlins after 5.

Well, to be fair, that was just bad luck. The ball hit the dirt and kicked away and you are taught to take off on those. The chances of the catcher recovering and throwing you out, especially if you go right away when you see the pitch headed for the dirt are very low. 19 times out of 20 Dejesus is safe. This one hit someones foot or something and bounced straight up the in air and Buck caught it standing up all ready to throw. Lucky bounce is all.

it's like a team of Ryan Theriot's. LaHair almost picked off, then tries to steal before Johnson even lifts his leg and he just steps off and throws him out.

know it's a night game but is marlyn wearing his shades @ the plate? he should change his name to ray Charles or Stevie wonder... 059 ain't bad for a blind man!

Ugh stupid error. I guess though as bad as this is to watch I never had great expectations for this season and support the rebuild so I've been able to find more positives than some people. We got some very good starting pitching, good hitting at spots and what looks like some good hitting coming up to take over spots where we need help. Bullpen help can be found, imo, easier than a lot of other stuff so as bad as it is for us it doesn't seem like a long time worry if we do well at other places.

I have to disagree. They got not just A triple A stud but THE AAA stud of the entire PCL for a position player who hadn’t played above the AZL level and a pitcher who was rather mediocre in his first taste of pro ball at low A. I’m not saying the guys they traded haven’t shown great promise but they have a very long way to go and a whole lot to prove before they make the bigs. Especially since Busch nearly filled a defined need (whether it had been at third or first) I take this trade any day of the week and don’t bother looking back.

    matt shaw (AA) has a .381/.552/.905 line through 7 games...3 homers and a triple.  6 games at 3rd, 1 game DH (5 PO, 7 A, 0 E).

    that's somewhat fun news.

i was blown away confused/pissed when it was announced the cubs were trading for y.almonte.

i was thrilled when m.busch was announced as part of the trade.

it's really weird to have the "you gotta take this payroll guy, too" (1.9m) part of the trade leak before the main piece.

the cubs didn't get a deal given what they gave up, but i was very happy to have a guy like busch in the fold with so much club control.

Have to admit I was initially disappointed the Cubs traded away the upside of Jackson Ferris but Busch is making a believer out of me.  If I still lived in midwest guessing we would have invented some drink special named a Busch Bomb at the local drinking establishment to celebrate his homers.

per Tribune: Suzuki MRI results pending from yesterday so we should get a timetable for return later today.

suzuki says he injured his oblique running to 1st, not swinging.  okay.  it's gonna be that kind of 2024 cubs year, huh?

i would say that's good news compared to screwing it up swinging, but i'm not familiar with the recovery time of people screwing up their oblique by running.

right side is at least different from his left side oblique injury last year.

A bit more Jewish take on one of my favorite Cubs, Kenny Holtzman. His 9-0 season while serving in the National Guard and being available to pitch on weekends was one of my coolest teen recollections.

Suzuki out with oblique strain. Canario indeed is called up. No word on Morel so that might be a red herring (or a red digit).

AZ lineup is posted but Counsell is always late to post his lineup.
