Cubs Late Rally Tops Angels at Diablo

Dan Vogelbach, Danny Lockhart, and Xavier Batista drove-in the runs, as the Cubs rallied for two in the 8th and two more in the 9th to defeat the Angels 5-3 in Extended Spring Training action this morning at Diablo Park Field #3 in Tempe, AZ.

Cub pitchers threw 6.1 IP of no-hit ball before the Angels were able to register a safety, but the Angels did score a run without the benefit of a hit in both the bottom of the 3rd and the bottom of the 5th, thanks to six walks (including four consecutive two-out walks by Su-Min Jung in the 5th), two stolen bases, and a passed ball.

Cubs Player of the Game was Shawon Dunston Jr, who reached base three times on a triple, a single, and a walk, laid-down a picture perfect sacrifice bunt, and made an outstanding diving catch in LF for the first out in the bottom of the 8th after the Cubs had taken a 3-2 lead in the top of the frame.

Here is the abridged box score from the game (Cubs players only):

Reggie Golden suffered a leg injury (hammy?) in Appleton last night. Any guesses on who will replace him?

Fri, 04/13/2012 - 6:11am — tim815 Reggie Golden suffered a leg injury (hammy?) in Appleton last night. Any guesses on who will replace him ========================================== TIM: I would say probably Xavier Batista. He was the last cut from the Peoria squad at Minor League Camp prior to Opening Day. Yasiel Balaguert is the other possibility.

Anyone know what happened to Abner Abreu? Haven't seen his name this spring...

The Cubs have 2 wins in the 2 games Clevenger started. Maybe we should blame Soto for the 5 losses. Or Maybe Soto takes 5 mph off everyones fastball. Michael Barrett approved this message.

RF DeJesus 2B Barney SS Castro LF Soriano 3B Stewart 1B LaHair C Soto CF Bryd P Sveum seems to be settling on a standard line up.

adam wainright...u suuuuuuuuck today. 4-0, 1 out top 1st...i.stewart hits his 1st homer on a hanging slider in the middle of the plate (1st since aug. 23 2010 in the bigs).

Samardzija may have gotten hit a bit there at the end of his outing, but in the early going it looks like JedStein's biggest offseason achievement was the development of the body switching technology that swapped the real Ninja and Soriano for players that can throw strikes and catch fly ball, respectively.

I think the Bulls have kind of shown what a focused, efficient, confident team can do - without having stars dominating any aspect of the team. If anything they play better without Rose right now. Looking forward to having him back though. But all this is to say that the awesome feeling of watching LaHair and Stewart pound the Cardinals while Ninja hangs in there, and our backup catcher the Double Machine yesterday etc etc. what a breath of Fresh Air these guys are after the bloated stars and managers of recent years. They might suck cellar air and lose 100 games like many of you say. But I'll stick with my 78+ win prediction and I'm already having more fun than at any point in the last two years. Plus i-Cubs are fun to check in on.

Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error?

Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.

    Things I've been wrong about:

-Tauchman is fine as a 4th OF. I knew that. I just want a better LH DH option and he was really the DH for us until Seiya got hurt. I'm glad Mervis is getting a chance at it. Caissie is coming for that job for sure. But Tauchman continues to be highly useful as a 4th OF with Seiya being hurt

-I wanted Yency to go to get guys at Iowa a chance. Guys like Palencia and Sanders or RileyT. Maybe even Hodge! But Yency has been better the last two plus weeks. He did hit 96 the other day. He was 93 in Texas to open the season.

-Leiter has his split working enough. It just needs to stay there

-I was surprised Jed picked Wisdom over Cooper. I wonder if this happens if Seiya wasn't hurt. Wisdom has more power. Cooper is the better hitter. Jed picked Wisdom and Wisdom had an option left as well.

-Palencia just doesn't miss enough bats. Similar to ManRod, just two yrs younger. ManRod is killing AAA for TB right now!

Things I got right so far:

-Hendricks. Sorry Kyle. You got paid though!

    Jed, you missed there.

-Smyly. If Jed could've traded him before or during ST, then he should have and saved some cash.

-Mastro.  Not a LH DH. Pinch runner. Defensive utility. Maybe he's better than Madrigal but didn't get a legit chance to prove it.

-Luke Little is good. He's had one bad outing. That's it. Needs to get better entering with guys on base. But he needs to stay in MLB.

-Oh yeah....Morel is doing fine at 3B! He'll get better as well!!

    bellinger "right rib contusion"

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.
