Jurica Slugs Giants to Victory at Indian School Park

Carter Jurica tripled and scored to key a two-run 1st inning, and blasted a solo HR leading off the bottom of the 6th to provide what proved to be the game-winning run, as the Giants edged the Cubs 3-2 in AZ Instructional League action this afternoon at Indian School Park Field #2 in Scottsdale.

The game was extended an extra half-inning so that Cubs LHRP Andrew McKirahan could get his pre-scheduled inning of work.

The Cubs offense sputtered once again, with heavy guns like Reggie Golden, Dustin Geiger, Javier Baez, Taiwan Easterling, and Rafael Lopez still out of the lineup with various injuries.

Zeke DeVoss was involved in both of the Cubs run-scoring innings, leading off the top of the 1st with a single back through the box, advancing to 2nd on a ground out (hit & run), and then scoring the first run of the game on a Micah Gibbs RBI single, and later driving-in Justin Marra from 3rd base with a single in the top of the 6th to tie the game (for a very short time) at 2-2.

The defensive gem of the day was turned-in by Cubs 3B Mark Malave, who came in at full tilt like the proverbial “bull in a china shop” (and the 16-year old Venezuelan is built like a bull, too!) to field a swinging bunt bare-handed, and then nailed the batter at 1st base by half a step for the third out of the inning with a strong off-balance throw that was right on the money. The Cub bench and the few spectators who were at the game whooped it up pretty good as Malave came off the field, and the kid was all-smiles.

Here is the abridged box score (Cubs players only):

Az Phil,
Has Luis Acosta played at all in Instructs?

Source: Right now no other Sox personnel going to Cubs with Theo
&
Talks on Theo compensation have not progressed according to source.

Cubs and Red Sox could fight over Sandberg as well.

she doesn't know who Cubs are offering or who Red Sox are asking but says "#Cubs Brett Jackson is not in the package".

if no B. Jackson and no major leaguers (cashner, castro, Garza, Soto), then do we care that much about anyone else (within some reason of course).

McNutt would hurt, but I'd get over it quick. I could see them liking Golden. They may like Flaherty's skillset. Cub Carpenter maybe...

Doesn't matter if it's Smaily Borges. People are gonna be pissed that we traded a uniform for a suit.

on a Boston Herald article...

...The Marlins tampered with Ozzie therefore over paid and gave up two garbage prospects. Being in the top 10 of a farm system that was stripped of any talent the year before ranking it 29th out of 30. Beane was head and shoulders at that time better than any other GM candidate with 6 years left on his deal not 1. Youkilis at that time was barely a top 100 (92) prospect in baseball. Jackson (who is left handed by the way not right handed) and McNutt are top 50 so no there is no precedent for giving up that kind of value...

I looked at that deal yesterday and I concur with the writer here. Jhan Marinez is not garbage, but he's a reliever, not a starter, and a rather wild one. A Cub comparison--a reliever, same age, same level, lots of strikeouts though not quite as many--would be Kevin Rhoderick, but Marinez is wilder. The other guy, Osvaldo Martinez, a middle infielder, does not look interesting. Plus, the Marlins got a minor-league pitcher in the deal.

Youkilis was a year older than Jackson while also being a year behind him: he had just split a season between high-A and AA. Youkilis's numbers were okay (if you like 8 home runs) but the one that really stuck out was walks.

of course, he was known as the Greek God of walks

He is the Greek god of bears.

What really sticks out to me is the .436 OBP following a year with a .504 OBP... What minor leaguers have numbers like that?

Sullivan tweets:

Breaking: Cubs bringing Ronnie Woo into compensation talks. Lucchino should cave after a couple hours of 'Theo, Woo, Theo, Woo..'

So Woo Woo isn't included in the deal?

can we pleeze put Sullivan into the trade package for Theo

How much additional cash would we have to kick in?

If they added Phil Rogers would that up the cash included?

Now you're just being greedy.

  • "Like the Chapman deal for Cubs from on-field POV, wish I didn't now have to feel lousy following an otherwise likable Cubs team." @jonahkeri

pretty much sums up my feelings

  • You mean Yankees?

  • Cards lose!

  • You do have a point. The TheoJed certainly would need to address this in a transparent way. Milton Bradley was no help to the team.

  • FWIW, the Cubs would get a compensation draft pick between the 1st & 2nd rounds (around #35) if they extend a Qualifying Offer to Chapman post-2016 (probably about $17M), Chapman declines, and then he signs with another MLB club before next year's draft.

  • This all assumes Chapman doesn't want to be a free agent and possibly sign a $20MM+/year deal. We all know free agents get overpaid, sometimes dramatically (Hello, JayHey!). Not sure why Chapman would agree to the extension. If i'm is agent, I would tell him I could get I'm a $100M deal as a FA.

  • I'll root for the uniform and imagine it's left-handed Rod Beck or Randy Myers out there I suppose.

  • Amen to this. I guess it's gonna happen and I'm gonna have to suck it up but I really despise domestic abusers with every bone in my body and cannot stand them on any team I root for.

  • I just prefer they don't  acquire players that choke their wives/girlfriends.

Rob G. 3 hours 28 min ago view
  • So you'd rather go with Blown Save guy, when you can trade a prospect who is blocked for one piece that could get you over the top to the Big Dance? That is pretty old thinking. This is not a move that they cannot recover from if it goes south. But the upside is potentially historic.

The E-Man 3 hours 37 min ago view
  • I'd prefer it not happen too.

  • it's a hell of a blockbuster, but it's for a guy who pitches 1/3rd of a season at an extreme premium considering the guy being traded and if the early extension $$$ rumors are true.

it's one of those things that is bringing a guy at the top his game, but something is nagging me that this trade piece could have been put to better use.

a huge part of me is all "hell yeah, top of the line producer"...another part of me is "hmm, that for that?"

  • Still don't want. Kinda hope they can't work out the extension.

Charlie 4 hours 19 min ago view
  • obviously not, and I'm sure they did their homework...just hope they have some better answers than the Yankees

Rob G. 4 hours 20 min ago view
  • Chapman 12+ Career WAR. Currently 4.7:1 k-BB. With Rondon/Chapman/Strop/Nathan/Montgomery/Wood...Its the best pen I can recall other than Sutter or Lee Smith handling things themselves.

Its gonna suck if he gets injured, and it appears he's not the greatest of characters.

But, he'll have another Cuban to hang out with on the team.

The E-Man 4 hours 41 min ago view
  • I agree with the names you mention but there are lots of names being tossed around still and there's that small matter of Chapman agreeing to the extension.
