Angels Pummel Cubs as Brett Jackson Completes Rehab

J. C. Rodriguez knocked-in six runs with an RBI single, a two-run double, and a three-run home run, leading the EXST Angels to a 10-2 thrashing of the EXST Cubs in Cactus League Extended Spring Training action this morning at Diablo Park Field #3 in Tempe, AZ.

The game was extended an extra couple of innings so that all of the pitchers who were due to throw today could get their scheduled work.

OF Brett Jackson (on Tennessee Smokies DL with finger injury) completed his rehab assignment today in Tempe, playing six innings in CF and going 1-4.at the plate. The Cubs #1 position player prospect hit everything to the opposite field today, roping a line-drive RBI single over the shortstop’s head in his first AB, flying out to LF his next time up, getting called out on strikes (frozen by a slow curve) in his 3rd plate appearance, and grounding out to the shortstop in his final AB.

Over his two rehab games (eight PA) at EXST, Jackson hit 375/375/625 (1B, 4-3, K, 3B, 1B, F-7, K, 6-3). He will be rejoining the Tennessee Smokies on Monday.

irod...with less than 170 hits from 3000 hits...has let Nats management know he doesn't want to be traded since the SF-needing-catcher rumors have swirled his name.

odd. he'd see so many more ABs with someone who doesn't have a hotshot prospect C stealing starts from him.

he already knows he's HOF bound, i guess...or he's too tired to start everyday...who knows.

Seems strange on the surface, he's always shown a desire to play everyday and kept talking about playing another 2 years to get to 3,000 hits.

Reed Johnson's back is flaring up and he might go on DL.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball...

per Rotoworld (with the Astros coming to town on Memorial Day):

Wandy Rodriguez was scratched from his scheduled Saturday start on Friday, and will be replaced in the rotation by top Astros prospect Jordan Lyles, who will make his first career start on Tuesday at Wrigley Field.
---
Cubs vs pitcher they've never seen: I see "L" flags

and a blast from the past (again, per Rotoworld)...

Rich Harden (shoulder) had a successful 15-pitch bullpen session Saturday.
The next step is to throw to hitters, but that hasn't been scheduled yet.

---
15 pitches gets him "deep" into the first inning, about the second hitter in the lineup

Reed Johnson to the DL with a weak back (ta da boom).

muskat tweets a Brad Snyder sighting at Wrigley.

Soto activated, koyie hill status remains useless but now less visible and w castillo gets to play with Iowa.

No Colvin?

Something to keep in mind about Brad Snyder is that he is out of minor league options, and because he has been outrighted previously in his career he has the right to be a free-agent if he is outrighted back to the minors.

This won't matter if Snyder comes up and sucks, but if he were to do well, like maybe if he hits a couple of HR and plays well in RF (he has one of the top OF arms in the organization), Tony Campana (with three minor league options available) and Lou Montanez (who has two minor league options left) would probably get sent down before Snyder, even if all three are playing well.

Per muskat...

Fuku, barney, castro, aram, pena, bozo, campana, hill and dempster

(not sure if that was before soto got activated, or if his flit is delayed)

crap, scrap, Castro, crap, crap, Bozo, scrap, crap, Dempster

I like Campana hitting 7th where he can get on base for Hill and Dempster to drive in. And if they don't, Fuku with his 3 rbi's will surely get him home.

Q-Ball: I guess Q wants to see what if he can "stir something up" at the end of the order.

Someone needs to tell him Geo is back and the new guy, Snyder, can play all three positions in the outfield.

snyder in CF would be funny as all hell...well, if he played for the other team.

he's a little ways and a few years removed from the 210-220 he used to weigh.

This just in from Q-Ball:“Snyder gives us some help in center field and helps keep us balanced with left- and right-handed bats. He’s been playing like a son of a gun at Triple-A.”

i havent seen him this year, but if he's in CF shape that'd be neat. dunno why he'd drop weight after hitting for power (finally) last year, though.

my rant was based on his size the last couple seasons, but hey...if he's still mobile enough for CF, whatever.

big week for snyder; been on stand-by for the birth of a child; #1 i think...

BTW, weather is crap in Chicago again, raining, dark, gloomy, and more rain on the radar.

http://www.accuweather.com/us/radar/re/il_/ra...

It's pouring at Wrigley.

Whoah! and noisy! Thunder.

Why is Clint Hurdle red as a beet? I just saw a clip of Hill throwing out Garret Jones (Hill was trying to throw the ball into RF but Castro ran over and caught it while tagging Jones before he got to 2nd). Hurdle came out to argue the call and looked like the Red Hulk.

http://mlb.mlb.com/video/play.jsp?content_id=...

I was thinking he looked like Hell Boy.

He does! He needs a cigar.

That looks like someone Photoshopped the video. Nobody knows what that's all about? A quick Google search (nothing extensive) turns up nothing.

It was not photoshopped. I saw it live (on TV).

I kept expecting Len & Bob to say something about a medical condition he had. But they made no mention of it while I was watching - I didn't see the whole game.

Yeah, I didn't think it actually had been Photoshopped -- it being on MLB video highlights that way -- it just looked so extreme, as if someone had done that as a prank or something.

Game update:

Cubs say it will not start on time, no time given, but they hope to get the game in. Storm is moving due East towards Wrigley, and I'm 30 miles from Chicago and it's not raining here, just looks like the aftermath of Armageddon. Maybe they'll get a window or two to play most of the game in.

Crap, no excuse not to mow my lawn, then.

Dave VanDyke tweet: Latest Wrigley downpour created waterfall off roof behind home plate. Warning track under water. May need ark soon.

Len just popped on TV and said, "Hopefully once this (rain) passes, we'll be ready to go in a couple of hours."

Radar has the rain moving through, but Len's probably right, at least another hour or longer, then the time to get the field ready, maybe start after 4?

http://www.accuweather.com/us/radar/re/il_/ra...

I didn't hear a start time but Len just implied they would start in maybe 30 mins or less, 3:45 ish. Tarp is off the field and grounds crew is cleaning up.

neat...first i thought i'd miss the whole game...then just a few hours...now i might get to see all of this amazing team do their thing.

GAME ON.

...in a few minutes ;p

Bucs averaging 5.6 runs vs Cubs this season. We have 2.8 avg vs Bucs in 5 games.

2 out, top 1st.

walk, walk, double, 2 runs score.

awesome.

can we quit pretending castro is a #3 hitter yet? maybe when he's 23+ or something =p

...and how much longer can d.barney coast on those singles? even his "mini-slumps" are starting to erode his overall numbers. hell of a RBI return on those singles out of the 2 slot, though.

Q does need to get Castro out of the 3 hole, he doesn't have the power to hit there yet. Barney's run production on mostly singles is amazing, but that kind of thing likely can't last either.

Somewhere yesterday they speculated Jeff Baker would be a good bench fit with Boston.

i like barney...i think he's superior bench and a great guy to weather an injury to a starter being a replacement.

i don't mind him playing now. he's hot now and supposedly j.baker is banged up a bit.

i don't think he's the future, though. i don't think he can sustain respectable production long-term at the plate.

Not sure I get it... he and Soriano are the only guys slugging over .400 - do you want Soriano in there? If so, where do you hit Castro.

aram/pena/castro/soriano/soto 3-7 is where i'd go at this point with the team...or move castro back to the #2 slot and make that a 2-6 list.

Someone must have slipped me a Mickey, did ARam just hr?

about time...

also, wow...the ivy has really grown and filled in really fast.

holy crap pena is one of the slowest human beings on the planet.

He seems to be a time out diva at the plate too.

PED's! (Plant Enhancing Drugs)

now that the Mariners are in 2nd and back to .500, they might have some use for Fukudome and the Silva money back for a prospect.

Campana's speed is a nice addition, sure makes more sense to lead him off though. Snyder (and probably Colvin shortly) can hold down RF and I'd surely be less depressed about watching someone who will be gone next year.

2-2, thanks to Campana's speed.

Agree and agree.

len/bob bleacher broadcast Monday game, WGN.

C-Pat with another huge day crushing the WSux today and a 14th inning winning HR yesterday. He's over .300 with 24 rbi.

I'm glad to see him get some success especially over the Comisculars.

"Sources tell the Chicago Tribune that the Cubs will call up infielder D.J. LeMahieu on Monday to replace Jeff Baker (groin)."

Trib link: http://www.chicagobreakingsports.com/sports/c...

No mention of who's getting bumped from the 40 man roster to make room.

Bruce Miles and Bruce Levine also have the story.

Cashner was moved to the 60 day dl, either earlier today or yesterday, I forget which. That should free up the spot. Snyder was already on the 40 man, wasn't he?

I think the Cashner move opened up a 40 man slot for Snyder, so someone is getting DFA'd.

Fernando Perez is my guess, and they keep passing him up for other OF's (Campana, Montanez, Snyder, and likely later on, Colvin). Although Stevens or Caridad could be the one.

If the Cubs do in fact bring up D. J. LeMahieu and then option him back to the minors once Jeff Baker returns from the DL, LeMahieu would get a 4th minor league option year, as long as it is used prior to 2015.

LeMahieu probably is the eventual heir to the Jeff Baker Roster Slot, just as Ryan Flaherty will very likely eventually fill the Blake DeWitt Roster Slot, and Steve Clevenger will take-over the Koyie Hill Roster Slot.

A Flaherty/LeMahieu platoon at 3B in 2012 is a possibility, since I doubt that the Cubs will go outside the organization to replace Aramis Ramirez, especially if they put all of their available cash into the Prince Fielder Free-Agent Fund. Even if Josh Vitters does develop into an MLB everyday 3B, I doubt that he will be ready anytime before 2013.

Jeff Stevens has been DFA.

Lord Voldemort Quade sucked the life out of Stevens arm in that 89 pitch 3.1 IP relief outing on April 22nd vs LA, but whatever...

Speedy Fernando dodges a bullet. Maybe he can have a Fernando cape day too.

The Cubs should call up Fernando and have all kinds of bizarre promotions, like Lex Luthor day, Kriptonite day, Abba day, etc.

Quade to DJ:
Welcome to Chicago, kid. Now grab some wood. You might see the field in a week or so. Just ask Castillo, who sat for Hill. You're behind Barney, and he's a stud regular now. You'll be the second PH behind DeWitt for now.

Seriously, that's where he probably belongs at this point.

d.barney and t.campana agree

dunno why k.hill is getting almost every start, though...quade doesn't seem to have a youth problem.

Cubs pitching prospect Rob Whitenack has a strained elbow, according to a couple of Cubs people. That never sounds good, but the Cubs said they had no plans to bring Whitenack to Chicago to get looked at. That might be a good sign because they’re generally very cautious on these things. It’s something to keep an eye on, though.

Muskat tweets:

Matt Garza making progress. Threw flat ground today, could do side on Wed

Wow. All MLB teams are wearing commemorative Memorial Day hats, which are butt ugly. They look like 1970's foam truckers hats. Red and white. Awful. The old ones they wore before with the regular hats with team logo in stars and stripes looked far better.

Rodrigo Lopez isn't very impressive so far. Throwing a lot of 81-82mph hanging sliders, and the occasional 88-89mph fastball.

He looked better in the 2nd. Hopefully he can at least eat some innings this year until we hopefully get a better option.

Hmm..Lopez...4 2/3 ip....6ER.....yep..he fits right into the 5th slot...ugh. He seems to be throwing slop.....

And...what better option may there be?

Shawon Dunston? :)

Ok...so we went out and spent the minimum, for an older Casey Coleman? That's better? I mean, hey, Lopez did lead the Majors in losses last season....

Soriano hurt his leg running out a groundball in the first inning and was replaced by Blake DeWitt. Cubs announced it is a left quad strain.

Is that going to clear a spot for Colvin to return?

I thought the injuries to Johnson, Byrd, and Baker cleared a spot for Colvin. It looks like the Cubs have given up on him. DeWitt just pulled a Soriano in LF. Now would be a perfect time to get Colvin up as he can get some playing time now.

F-18 fly overs top 4th get Astros swinging at anything, Lopez goes 1-2-3...Let's invite the Air Force over for every game!

That's Navy.

  • Hmmm, my math might be fuzzy but if he retired 3 batters with 3 pitches, how did he get a 1/1 GO/AO ratio?

  • Pls DFA Peralta when Richard comes back. Richard 1 IP, O R, O ER, 0 BB, 2 Ks in first rehab appearance. We really need to trade for a LHRP.

  • The thing with Heyward is its not just free agency. He is way under performing his career #s. He's making the same % of contact but his soft contact is much higher and hard contact much lower than all his previous years so there is something very specifically going on this year causing the issues. Chances are he will eventually get back to his previous #s and it's better to get the slump now and get that hot run later but I wish I knew what is different about this year. He's either just not seeing the ball as well or a swing change is causing it.

  • Only 3 pitches for Leathersich. Not much of a rehab outing.

    Thanks for the reporting Phil.

  • He's the nastiest pitcher I've seen in awhile. I'm gonna give them all a mulligan on this one.

Coghlan's strike out was more disappointing. He was fighting off a lot of pitches and not swinging at crap, and on the last pitch, he swung at stuff he was laying off, and struck out.

And Heyward, too. I don't blame Heyward - I blame free agency. I hate it. You almost never get a valid return on the investment.

I look forward to the day when ball players own the teams. The current economics are not sustainable.

  • Oh, I'm sure you're right. He's not 27-27 in saves for nothing. But, man, I hope they learned last night that he didn't throw a single pitch in the zone to KB, Contreras or Baez, and they all just kept swinging.

  • I'm pretty sure it looks like a sweet pitch on the way in. How many sinkers like that are there at 98 mph? I agree that they should just do a Lackey and stand their with their bat on their shoulders until he throws a strike next time, but I can see how that's hard to do.

The bullpen, on the other hand, is a mess, and Heyward is starting to piss me off.

billybucks 17 hours 33 min ago view
  • Wow, did they blow this game. Stupid plays by the kids in the 7th -- Almora throwing to 3rd instead of 2nd to keep the DP in order (when a DP probably wins the game) and Baez throwing to 3rd (to a backpedalling KB) instead of getting the easy 2nd out at first - cost them the game. Also, Contreras almost throws the ball into RF on a nonexistent pick-off play. And Maddon, for using Peralta in the first place. Did they do a bunch of shots in the dugout before the 7th? Unbelievably bad baseball. I thought Almora had a high baseball IQ?
