Pitching & Timely Hitting Key to Cub Success at Salt River Fields

Dong-Yub Kim and Brandon May smacked back-to-back two out RBI doubles to key a two-run 1st inning that propelled one squad of EXST Cubs to a 5-2 victory over one squad of EXST Rockies on Red Mountain Field, while Yao-Lin Wang, Jin-Young Kim, and Starling Peralta combined to throw a three-hit shutout as the other squad of Cubs blanked the other squad of Rockies 3-0 on Dust Storm Field, in Cactus League Extended Spring Training doubleheader action at Salt River Fields at the Talking Stick Resort east of Scottsdale this morning.

The games were played simultaneously, and both games were seven-inning affairs.

Tennessee OF Ty Wright (sprained ankle) and Iowa SS Augie Ojeda (back) continued their injury rehab assignments in today’s game on Red Mountain Field, with Wright playing LF for six innings and going 1-2 with a single, a HBP, a stolen base, and two runs scored, and Ojeda playing SS for five innings and going 0-3 (4-3, K, 4-3).

Only one pair of umpires showed up, so the game on Red Mountain Field was umpired by Rockies and Cubs coaches.

Here are the abridged box scores from today’s games (Cubs players only)

Az Phil,
How much longer will the Cubs keep Loosen at Fitch? Thanks.

And it keeps getting better...

Garza to miss Sunday's start with elbow tightness and will see a Dr. in Chicago. Russell or Shark-Face could start.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking...

"Sunday's plans are up in the air, though Quade said it will likely be a bullpen day, and James Russell is the "prohibitive favorite" to start, after pitching three scoreless innings against Boston on Friday."

So they plan on bringing a guy back on one day's rest and hope he gives them 3 ip or more? The management of this team is ridiculous. Don't we have anyone in the minors that is scheduled to start Sunday to bring up for one game?

Randy Wells is scheduled to start Sunday for Iowa. I don't know who's scheduled for Tennessee. They have said Wells would make 1 start at Iowa and then return for next weekend, wouldn't be better to send down Maine and bring Wells up for this start? Or send down Main (or someone else) and bring up someone else to plug in?

The Cubs 'brainiacs' on the field and at Clark & Addison are making this a very tough team to root for (or want to spend money watching).

Project .400

Fox Saurday baseball can kiss my ass a 2nd week in a row.

$200+ a year for MLB EI and they add yet another blackout date to their schedule. Thanks AGAIN for yet ANOTHER Yankees game. neat.

That's B.S. They advertise that plan as "watch every game."

BTW, Cubs and Red Sox wearing 1918 throw back jerseys tonight.

MLB and Fox can both go eat a bag of dicks for taking 3 games and any games that fall into their broadcast period on both Sat and Sun to blackout.

Crunch, I just sent you a message/email? Not sure which, it went to whatever your contact info is on TCR.

got it...thanks.

Quade said he thought about calling up Wells for tomorrow's start but said 'he's not ready'. I understand not rushing a guy back from an injury, but if he's considered healthy enough to pitch 5 innings for Iowa I don't really see why he's not healthy enough to pitch 5 innings up here.

But still, there's NOBODY else available?

just j.r. mathes...he kinda sucks, though...goes tonight for Iowa.

Yeah I think his ERA is around 9 or so this year.

PAUL N: For some reason Tennessee LHP Chris Rusin was scratched from his scheduled start tonight, and RHP Rob Whitenack is scheduled to make his next start for Tennessee tomorrow, so I guess either of them could be possibilities to make Matt Garza's start tomorrow.

BTW, if Whitenack is brought up to pitch at Fenway tomorrow and then gets optioned back to the minors (even if he is brought up to make just the one start), he would get a 4th minor league option year, as long as it is used prior to 2015.

Thanks AZ.

Muskat says that after the game Quade confirmed Russell will start Sunday.

DeWitt starting in LF.

1st inning, 1st batter, catcher interference by Koyie Hill.

and Z isn't happy about it.

he actually backed up pedroia with that 1st establishing inside pitch. damn.

"how do you sell those things? how do you sell a plain white hat? no, really...it's a red sox hat."

ha. marketing fail.

And it's probably $40 on MLB.com.

oh shit...

marlon byrd hit in head by pitch...down hard.

in the face

well, we get colvin back in the bigs now =p

probably see a lot of reed johnson in CF, though.

Eye socket is what he reacted like, replay wasn't clear, but that's about where it hit him.

If he fractured his eye socket his career could be over. A lot of guys were done after that. Dickie Thon (did return later but never had full vision), Steve Kemp...

they got him off the field REAL fast...he was in crazy pain.

Juan Encarnacion, Tony Conigliaro, Luis Salazar this spring...

That's about the worst goddamn thing that can happen, other than a death. F#ck. I just hope Marlon is going to be able to see alright, forget baseball.

Looked like it caught all eye socket.

"gash" under the eye is all that is being reported so far, and that he stayed at the hospital over night.

And that they couldn't say if he had vision problems or any fractures until they ran more tests.

That's two batters hit. It's time for Z to do what he does.

Looked a-w-f-u-l.

I love watching the outfielders run with their pants up high, it looks like old time highlights.

announcers are way too busy filling the broadcast with 90%+ redsox talk to discuss m.byrd or talk about/around the situation.

this broadcast is an embarrassment. they seem to only know or have direction to talk about 1 team.

almost all the cubs talk is about carlos pena, too. go figure.

Join the fun in Parachat...well me and crunch.

The Cubs might opt to place Marlon Byrd on the new 7-day DL that MLB clubs can use for players who suffer a concussion.

Cubbery is contagious!

Reuters-The owners of the Boston Red Sox have contacted the Center of Disease Control and Prevention and had the visiting clubhouse burned to the ground.

And further preventive measures they had Cubs team shipped to an island off of Cape Cod to remain until further tests could be completed.

WICKED HAHDCORE!!

Nice minor-league streak for Cubs: twelve wins in three days.

A few interesting numbers--

Peoria: Eric Jokisch has been finishing games for Hayden Simpson all season. Simpson doesn't ever quite get to five innings, so he's 0-1, while Jokisch is 6-0.

Daytona: Junior Lake has 16 stolen bases.

Tennessee: Matt Spencer has ten home runs. Flaherty has 43 RBI.

Byrd being kept in hospital overnight, Cubs said they can't say if has a fracture or vision problems until more tests are run on Sunday. I would take that as he has some swelling and probably some vision problems now, but they can't determine yet to the extent until the swelling starts to go down. I doubt they wouldn't be able to say anything if he were just sore.

story on Garza

http://www.suntimes.com/sports/baseball/cubs/...

says he's felt it on and off over the last 2 starts and if it was a postseason game, he'd be pitching. Says he's felt it before but it's gone away.

Cubs looking to call up someone for the pen tomorrow.

A fresh arm would be nice. AZ Phil said Rusin was scratched from tonight's start, maybe he's the guy.

This is what I mean by portfolio risk...

The Cubs are only 20-24?! It feels more like 10-24.

as i was saying before the computer twitched...even in victory the cubs look so bad; witness the keystone cub baserunning in that wacky, little leaguish 8th last night...i shall go to the wells this afternoon & see what i can see...

John Kruk said he talked to Marlon who said his eye was completely swollen shut, but he is expected to be released today.

http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/breaking...

Police arrested who they think is one of the two guys who beat a Giants fan half to death at Dodgers stadium...

http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/la-me-brya...

Which would explain why they can't do tests on his vision...

Yes, and it would hopefully mean there are no fractures.

  • Billy McKinney had season-ending knee surgery last August and came to Minor League Camp this year somewhat restricted. (He was used mostly as a DH in Cactus League Minor League Camp games), and I'm not sure he's 100% right now (he's repeating AA, and his XBH numbers are way down, like he's not getting good rotation in his lowev half). That might have been part of the reason why the trade wasn't completed right away.

  • Rashad Crawford was a basketball star in HS (he was known as "Baby Jordan", and baseball was only his second sport) and he has plus-speed and athleticism, so when the Cubs drafted him (Keith Lockhart was the scout)  he was seen as a long-term project.

I was at Fitch Park the day that Rashad Crawford became a LH hitter, He waa never a switch-hitter, He went directly from being a RH hitter to a LH hitter, which I had never seen before.

  • I'm with Rob G and Johann here. It's not about Chapman as a pitcher. I just don't want to have to block out a real problem (the domestic violence) in order to try to enjoy the frivolous ball and stick game.

Charlie 18 min 30 sec ago view
  • ROB G & BOB R: You're right. The QO can only be extended if the player spends the entire previous season with one club, so only the Yankees could have offered one to Chapman (if he wasn't traded). If an Article XX-B FA is traded during the season, the new club can't offer a QO. .

  • i was going off what AZPhil said above...they keep talking about tweaking the rules, i didn't know if that had been changed or not. my winter/spring was way too hectic aside from a couple weeks vacation in janurary and i missed a lot of stuff.

if not, this is one hell of an expensive trade for what looks to be 30-40 innings of play...including the playoffs. damn.

crunch 30 min 36 sec ago view
  • Did the QO rules change?

    unless there's a TARDIS involved, I dont believe that's a possibility

Rob G. 34 min 41 sec ago view
  • I didn't think you could offer a QO to a player who was traded during the season? For example, Lester was not offered a QO when the Cubs signed him.

Rob Richardson 36 min 6 sec ago view
  • I think the assumption is that make him a Qualify Offer and he signs elsewhere next year.

billybucks 39 min 9 sec ago view
  • cubs QO, chapman declines, cubs get a draft pick, brewers sign him for 6/90m, brewers win world series in a sweep as chapman strikes out g.torres in game 4 vs the yanks.

crunch 39 min 40 sec ago view
  • Sorry, how are the Cubs getting a pick out of this?

Rob G. 56 min 39 sec ago view
  • Besides what he adds to the Cubs bullpen, getting Aroldis Chapman means the Giants and Nationals (and Indians) can't get him, and that could be important come the post-season.

When the opponent knows Chapman is out there ready to pitch in the 9th, it can cause the other team to alter their strategy and play things differently than they otherwise might prefer to play things in the 6th, 7th, and 8th innings.

Arizona Phil 58 min 29 sec ago view
  • thats a lot for 2-3 months....beyond Torres it's a lot of organizational depth, but hate to use your best prospect for a rental.

Rob G. 1 hour 44 sec ago view
  • chap's a FA after this season. 2-3 months of chapman and a sandwich pick after the 1st round (stay healthy chap) seems to be the "worst" outcome, but damn they're giving up a hell of a piece in torres.

i don't care that torres is blocked...i just think something more valuable/controlled can come from trading away a guy like him.

crunch 1 hour 13 min ago view
  • "According to USA Today's Bob Nightengale, the Cubs will not have a contract extension in place with Aroldis Chapman when their trade for the closer becomes official."

    hmmm.

crunch 1 hour 20 min ago view
  • Per Patrick Mooney, it's SS Gleyber Torres, RHP Adam Warren, RF Billy McKinney, and CF Rashad Crawford for Aroldis Chapman

Arizona Phil 1 hour 32 min ago view
  • That is a hell of a lot if they don't get an extention done. I'm assuming Chapman is going to be the closer with Rondon in the 8th and Strop in the 7th. That sounds great but Rondon #s aren't as good in non-save situations so we'll see how he responds to being the setup man.
