2010 Rule 4 Draft Deadline Update

The deadline for signing HS, JC, and college players (other than seniors) selected in this past June's Rule 4 Draft has past, as the Cubs announced the signing of four draft picks (RHP Ben Wells, RHP Kevin Rhoderick, LHP Casey Harman, and LHP Brian Smith) prior to the midnight deadline on Monday.

In total, the Cubs signed 29 of their 50 draft picks, just about the usual number they sign each year. In addition, the Cubs signed four Non-Drafted Free-Agents (NDFA) to provide depth at Mesa and Boise.

Here are the 2010 draft picks and Non-Drafted Free-Agents (NDFA) who were signed by the Cubs, and those who the Cubs were not able to sign. The highest draft pick to get away was 6th round pick OF Ivan DeJesus, who will be attending UAB.

Welcome back Az. Phil.

We get 3 pitching prospects for DLee.

via CM

3 prospects to #cubs are robinson lopez, tyrelle harris and jeffrey lorrick for d-lee

...not a bad little haul

Lopez 19, A level is a question mark.
Harris 23, AA and Lorrick 22, A+ both look like legitimate prospects.

Not bad at all.

I wish him well, he was a nice player for us for a long time. Now we need to figure out a long term 1b.

Agree 1000%

CarrieMuskat: 3 prospects to #cubs are robinson lopez, tyrelle harris and jeffrey lorrick for d-lee

vial paul "champagne corks and spellcheck" sullivan:

Cubs smallest home crowd of the year: 33,267. Starting to look a lot like end of 2006, when school and Bears led to atendance plunging.

I'm sure they sold that many tickets. All those season ticket holders. But it looked like there were about 10,000 unoccupied seats today.

And the people who were there sure left early. Like maybe they got the tickets from a friend for free.

At any rate, a beautiful mid-August day and the bleachers were empty. Apparently it's no longer the place to see and be seen.

Per rotoworld...

Hoffpauir called up

And regarding the prospects...

Harris turns 24 this winter and isn't widely regarded as a quality pitching prospect, but he's thrown up a 1.46 ERA and 11 strikeouts in 12 1/3 innings this season since being promoted to the Double-A level. With some work, he could turn himself into a solid late reliever.

Glad your back, AZ Phil.

You add a whole lot of class to this place.

AZ Phil-

I keep noticing in the Peoria Chiefs box scores that Nick Struck keeps not starting, but still doing all of the pitching heavy loading. Can you explain what they are doing? Also, it seems like Marcus Hatley keeps starting games, pitching two innings, then being pulled in favor of someone like Struck who ends up pitching 5-6 innings after him. Can you explain that as well?

Thanks

==================================

W FLAG: Marcus Hatley had Tommy John surgery about a year ago and he is still in rehab mode, although he is not on a "rehab assignment" per se. He starts the game so that he can take as much time as he needs to get warmed-up, and then Struck "piggy-backs" behind Hatley (which is Struck's day to pitch), essentially throwing starter's innings, but just not as the starting pitcher.

The Cubs (and other organizations) piggy-back pitchers at the lower levels (DSL, R, SS-A, and Lo-A) where pitch counts are sometimes too low to go with the conventional five starters and seven relievers you see at A+, AA, AAA, and MLB.

Ah. That makes perfect sense. I knew about the piggy backing thing but I had no idea about Hatley's TJ surgery so now the whole situation makes sense. I assume that means that Struck's arm is much more live and easy to get warmed than Hatley's which would make a move out of the 'pen for Struck more sensible. Thanks for the heads up

Sczeru... ah hell, that guy. Az Phil, do the Cubs have some sort of insurance and/or out clause if he hurts himself badly (broken bones, significant ligament damage) while playing NCAA FB?

And although I think I know the answer, most importantly is there any way to recoup the pick used on him in the same scenario??

=================================

Tony S: Yes. The Cubs gave Matt Szczur $100K to play minor league baseball for a month and they also gave him permission to play football for Villanova this fall. But if he wants the balance of the $600K signing bonus (which is equivalent to "2nd round money"), Szczur has to choose baseball over football prior to the NFL Combine next February, and put in it writing, and then he also has to pass a physical.

If Szczur decides he wants to go to the NFL Combine and is unwilling to choose baseball over football at that time, he keeps the $100K, but does not get the balance of the signing bonus ($500K), while the Cubs keep him under club control for at least seven minor league seasons in case things don't work out for him in the NFL and he decides he wants to play baseball after-all.

So the Cubs are gambling $100K that Szczur will ultimately choose baseball over football, and if he does so prior to the NFL Combine, it will cost the Cubs another $500K, which can be spread over several years because Szczur is a two-sport athlete.

All good words, thanks so much as always!

AZ Phil, I was wondering what was going on with "Sir" Reginald Golden. I saw a few box scores where he was played as the DH, but I haven't seen a blip about him in about 2 weekds. Did he get hurt? I was also wondering if you thought that Hayden Simpson has a chance to go to the AFL this year, since he was unable to participate at all this season. A bevy of late-signing 1st rounders last year made their debuts in the AFL, including Mike Minor, Mike Leake, Dustin Ackley, etc., which made me think it was a possibility for Simpson. Obviously his health is the biggest concern, but I would like to hear your take on it.

HRUBES: Reggie Golden has been nursing an injury and I think it's his hamstring, but I'm not positive.

If he gets the OK from his doctor, Hayden Simpson will make his on-field pro debut in the AZ Instructional League next month.

Thanks, AZ Phil. I really appreciate the info. You are literally the only way to get information on the Arizona League Cubs.

  • Not certain why the site has been slowed. Worked much of Wednesday on it and will continue today. Sorry for the inconvenience. I will probably take it offline for a while, but it will be up before the game against the Mets.

  • Boras is 63, maybe he'll be retired or dead by the time Bryant, Russell, Almora, Albertos all hit free agency. Doubt he will be before Jake hits there though.

  • Interesting choices when guys get healthy.

LaStella, Fowler & Soler replace Coghlan, Almora and Sczcur? I assume they don't want Almora to sit.

Despite MIggy's demise, I assume they keep him around to mentor Contreras?

  • I believe Willson now has more CS than MIggy. The kid has an arm. Also, Russell is amazingly good on those plays at 2nd.

  • Although it felt like it, Jake didn't lose to them -- he got the W. (Assuming you are referring to Monday's game)

  • Arrieta didn't lose to the Reds. He got the win -- he just didn't pitch like we expect him to.

  • it's not like this CIN team is lost-cause horrible, but aside from defense and power this is a truly horrible team.

kinda crazy arrieta lost to them and yesterday's game had to go 15 innings for the cubs win.

  • It looked like Hamilton got screened by Duvall and that Duvall just barely deflected the ball off of his glove--redirecting it slightly without taking away much of its momentum.

At least it didn't turn into a Schwarber/Fowler situation. Hamilton and Duvall are both pretty important youngish players for the Reds.

  • he walked off the field on his own. aside from a concussion watch and some attention to his leg/knee that buckled a bit under him, the biggest thing hurt was probably his pride after the ball knocked off his skull.

  • After last night, an inside-the-park HR seems kind of run-of-the-mill somehow.

Sounds bad for Hamilton. Hope he's okay--listening on the radio.

  • SHOW ME THE MONEY:  Jose Albertos has signed with Mega-Agent Scott Boras.

Albertos has already received his signing bonus and won't see any additional significant money until he reaches the big leagues,  so this is a long-term investment for the Boras Corporation.
