Father's Day: Darren Baker asks the question...and Dusty has no answers

Roster Update: Angel Guzman to the DL with a right triceps strain, Kevin Hart called up from Iowa.

Happy Father's Day everyone.

I've mostly been shoulder shrugging since the story came out that Sammy Sosa was on the positive test list for PED's that the MLB Players Association didn't destroy. To me it was old news. After the "Steroid Era" cloud passes and everyone in it washs off the stink, I wonder what will be the impact on what baseball should consider one of it's most important assets, the kids who fall in love with the game because of their father's (or mom's, but today is father's day) love of the game.

On this father's day, one of the things I treasure most is that my son is a Cubs fan and a Baseball fan. So when I read this brief Fred Mitchell article in the Tribune, it made more impact on me than when the Sammy news was leaked in the NY Times.

"The worst part for me is that I don't know what to tell my son [Darren]," the Reds manager said after Saturday's Civil Rights Game luncheon at the Duke Energy Center. "He asks me, 'Dad, are there any good hitters not on something?' I just tell him that everyone is under suspicion. I will just be glad when it's all over."

From the previous era of baseball scandal, when gambling almost ruined the game, Shoeless Joe Jackson, supposedly was asked by  a young fan who's hero was involved in the throwing of the 1919 World Series, leading to the now infamous quote:  "say it ain't so, Joe."

So when Dusty Baker was asked the modern day version of this question, he answers with questions:

"Who knows if it's real or not," Baker said. "And if it is real, still, what do you say?"

Before Sosa, manager Baker's tenure in San Francisco was clouded by the most obvious player with body shape changes,  it seems that if he was paying attention, he should have had a clue as to what was going on with Sammy.

Asked if he was aware of Sosa's alleged steroid use with the Cubs, Baker replied:

"I had no way of telling because I had never seen it. They asked me the same thing in San Francisco. I don't think any manager knows."

Tough Questions. Unsatisfying answers. It brings to mind the proverb attributed to the 3 wise monkeys, See no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. From now on, I'll just file that proverb in the outhouse with Monkey see, Monkey do.

"I had no way of telling because I had never seen it. They asked me the same thing in San Francisco. I don't think any manager knows." Nice answer Dusty, it's pretty much a set answer for him. Why do you burn out young arms? Why can't you win with best team in league? Why can't you control your players?

Dusty's no different than LaRussa in this regard - last time a reporter had the temerity to wonder aloud to LaRussa's face how he could have possibly missed McGuire's steroid use, he angrily walked away. They're not going to ever face up to their parts in the whole charade, we might as well get used to it.

1 game out of 2nd place...still 2.5 back out of first.

So Aaron Poreda sees Frank Thomas (who is a broadcaster now, apparently) interviewing another player and says, "That's a big guy, he should be an athlete." LOL! Hilarious, yet it occurs to me that Poreda probably didn't grow up with Frank Thomas and I did. Thanks for making me feel old, pecker.

I can't believe this team is 2.5 out --- The division is worse than that, the Cubs are tied for first in the loss column. Stl has played 5 more games. The league isn't so hot either, after the Dodgers...the Cubs are also tied for 1st in the loss column for the Wildcard.

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.

I’ll spare the details which I’ve stated before but, in short, the Cardinals have lost their sight of their successful identity and strategy over last several dominant decades. From the beginning of the season I saw the Cardinals being in last place or near it again this year, and my prediction is that Mozeliak will be gone after the end of the season.

I would have kept Cooper rather than Wisdom, but at least I can understand why they did it.  In a team that lacks dominant power hitters, Wisdom can be a dominant power hitter, at least in streaks.  I suppose that there is always the possibility that the streaks longer in both duration and frequency.  I will be content if they essentially make a 100 % DH commitment to Mervis against righties and Wisdom against lefties.  When a regular needs rest, give them total rest, rather than a DH rest.  Do this for at least 2 months, and then re-evaluate at that point.

    This is Cubs adjacent but…

Jordan Walker just was optioned by the deadbirds. For all the talk of the Cardinals development machine, they’ve really missed on a lot of can’t miss superstars lately. Walker has struggled. Gorman has been okay. They’re already trying to push Carlson out the door. Their pitching system has been so bad they had to go out and sign basically a full rotation over the last two offseasons.

They’ve still developed a few of those pesky solid players, like Donovan, Edman, and Nootbaar. Their two best prospect to MLB players have been Adolis and Arozarena, neither of which is a cardinal.

I hope they never figure it out again. Cardinal failure brings me such joy.

Thank you so much! I really appreciate not only all your posts but how eager you are to respond to our questions.

Is it just me or does it seem that official scorers are becoming less likely to call a misplay an error?

Guess I've hit my cranky old-man phase in life.  "I remember back in the day when an error was an error.  Official scorers have gone soft.  Now where did I put my readers?!!??"

Sidenote, maybe Bellinger should be a little more careful against the Astros.  That was the series last year that a play at wall put him on the IL.

i hated the almonte pickup, but he's 9-10 out of 12 for good outings, following a great spring.  hope he can keep it up.

i already miss cooper, but yeah...the thin OF roster backup the team seems to want to carry probably got wisdom preference over cooper.  i could live without seeing wisdom at 3rd unless it's a blowout, though.
