Head in a Word Cloud.

Perhaps you have run into "word clouds," a visual device that represents how frequently different words appear in a text.  As a historian I love it, as I can do fun things like compare Obama's 2008 Democratic National Convention nomination acceptance speech with McCain's from the Republican National Convention.

That's useful stuff.  I can show word clouds like those to my students, and ask them what the clouds do (and do not) reveal.

But who cares about utility.  Let's use some word clouds to navel-gaze, and check out our favorite baseball-related websites.

Using the free java application at www.wordle.net I entered the link for The Cub Reporter's RSS feed, and got this:

What does this tell us about ourselves?  Eh, on the one hand, perhaps not much more than a bit of fun navel gazing.  It does look like it's spring training, though.  The most prominent names I see are Micah Hoffpauir, Darwin Barney, Joey Gathright and Marshall.  And it looks like we're a permissive group, we like the word "allowing."  I have no idea why.

However, comparing our cloud with that from Carrie Muskat's feed shows some interesting differences

"Cubs" is even more prominent for Muskat than it is for us.  Perhaps not surprising, as selling the team is part of her job description.  But look at that Giant Blue Sutcliffe!  Muskat's readership likely is A. more interested in name-brand Cubs (and ex-Cubs) and B. more interested in human interest stories.  Those differences show up elsewhere in the word cloud:  check out how much more prominent Milton Bradley and his quadriceps are.  LouPa features prominently, as do other marque names like Aramis and Harden.  Forgive me for noticing, and remarking on, the prominence of "Carrie."

If you're really in to self-mutilation, there's Phil Rogers' RSS feed.

It doesn't look like Rogers actually talks much about baseball.  Appropriate.

I should credit Rogers, though, as there isn't a larger Tribune Cubs News feed.  Paul Sullivan also doesn't seem to have any sort of news feed.  So instead, I cut and pasted the text of four of his "mailbag" columns into wordle, and got this.  (Wordle will randomly pair different fonts and color schemes and word layout, if you don't specify any.  This layout struck me as quite pretty, so I left it as is.)

I dare you to guess, from this word cloud, what the title is of Paul Sullivan's column.

Both the Sun-Times and the Daily Herald offer Cubs RSS feeds. Here's the Sun-Times' feed.

Compare that to the Daily Herald's feed.

The Sun Times appears to care far more about Milton Bradley.  The Herald, the Cubs.

How does TCR compare to Bleed Cubbie Blue?  Here's their word cloud.

I'm not interested in any BCB/TCR rivalry:  It's a big enough fan-base to support both of us.  But there are interesting differences.  BCB's word cloud includes a lot more, well, internet-y words like "post" and "comment" and "link". TCR's wordle word cloud more closely resembles "traditional" news media with a higher preponderance of player names and baseball-event sort of words.

Like many of you, I read Fan Graphs religiously. Here's the word cloud on their feed.

Look much like a sabrmetric site?

Comments

Yes, I know that my clouds broke the normal margins and formatting and all that stuff.

No, I don't know how to fix it.  Rob will spank me, later; it's part of the little games we play.

Interesting post Trans. I've never seen a word cloud before. Cool stuff.

Trans, you glorious word cloud-gazing bastard...

Love it. I, too, played the Obama/McCain game during the campaign, though I used op-ed pieces they wrote on consecutive days for the Wall Street Journal, right before the election. It was illuminating, as are all of these. (The historian in you might also enjoy running the Gettyburg Address or the Declaration of Independence through this sort of analysis.)

What I take from the Phil Rogers cloud--he can't believe he is lucky enough to have a job that takes him to Arizona.

Ha, yeah, I also gathered that about Mr. Rogers.

I haven't started collecting them yet, as I just in the last week realized how much teaching potential this has, but yes, I'm going to be doing this for the Gettysburg Address, the Declaration, Inaugural speeches, etc. etc....

If I really wanted to be a naughty blogger, I'd do it for, say, the last year's worth of posts written by You....  and then by Phil... and Rob and The Good Doctor.....

And thanks, Nate, glad to introduce something new to TCR.

fixed it, images should be no bigger than 600 to 650 pixels in width, there's a dimension attribute when you add an image. Think Al wrote a post about commenting guidelines recently, hence the odd word cloud. Not sure it's the norm for that site....

Thank you!  ~wincing at my embarassed neediness~

I should have added that disclaimer about ALL the word clouds:  they reflect only recent RSS feeds:  they're a snapshot in time, nothing permanent.  Al had a very large post on commenting guidelines, yes.

I really don't have a dog in that "rivalry" - it was the first time I checked out BCB in over a year, but that's just due to lack of time and ambition on my part.

I would have done word clouds for TLFC and League of Her Own as I check those out more frequently (but sadly, not often enough), but that would have then opened me up to a lot more of "hey, why not MY site?"   So I just left it at the highest-volume Cubs blog out there, and called it good.

I am now ready for my exile, and hate-mail from all offended Cubs bloggers. :)

I love that "Chad" appears in our RSS feed word cloud. And Mr. Fox is probably only a small part of this.

Is there one that highlights, "Fuck the Economy, I'm going to Spring Training"?

http://twitter.com/cst_cubs Corey Koskie signs a minor league contract with the Cubs. I guess he'll compete with Luis Rivas for that backup 3B/2B job that may or may not exist on the 25-man roster. Koskie would be a more interesting backup in case A-Ram goes down, at least.

But Trans, those word clouds are just a graphic way of presenting word counts which have been available forever. For example, and I apologize for the exceedingly long post, here is the word and special character count for the entire TCR home page. You'll note that "CUBS" obviously and "RHP" currently are very important at TCR Word Frequency % - 40 1.79 — 2 0.09 ! 5 0.22 " 4 0.18 $1 3 0.13 $11 1 0.04 $12M 2 0.09 $133 1 0.04 $137M 1 0.04 $13M 1 For sure. This lineup isn’t exactly stacked as is, and subbing out a Cooper or even a Tauchman for Madrigal won’t do it any favors.

the ESPN bottom graphic taking up 1/8th of the screen sucks.

i only use ESPN during baseball season and i'm forced to watch a baseball broadcast designed to be broadcast in sports bars and betting parlors where the news/scores of other games is as important as what you're actually tuned in to watch.

morel triple to start the season....yeaaaaaaaaaaaaah

LHP Blake Weiman appears to have been the last cut from the AAA Iowa roster. He is with the Tennessee group at Minor League Camp.

bruce bochy is hobbling rather badly for a guy who's had 2 hip replacements.  his gait is extremely wonky taking the lineup card to the ump.

yeah, for me this isn't about who's better at 3rd.  it's madrigal, period.  for me it's about who's not hitting in the lineup because madrigal is in the lineup.

occasional play at 3rd for madrigal, okay.  going with the steele/ground-ball matchup...meh, but okay, whatever.

seeing madrigal get significant starting time...no thanks.

Yeah I am very disappointed Madrigal is starting. He has no business as a starter. He is AAA insurance, a back up at best. Sure his defense looks fine because he plays far enough in that his noodle arm isn’t totally exposed. It comes at the cost of 3B range.

He’s garbage, and a team serious about winning would NOT have him starting opening day.

in other news, it took 3 PA before a.rizzo got his 1st HBP of the season.

With two home runs (so far) and 5 rbi today … clearly Nick Martini is the straw that stirs the Reds drink 😳

    madrigal at 3rd...morel at DH.

making room for madrigal or/and masterboney to get a significant amount of ABs is a misuse of the roster.  if it needed to get taken care of this offseason, they had tons of time to figure that out.

morel played almost exclusively at 3rd in winter ball and they had him almost exclusively there all spring when he wasn't DH'ing.

madrigal doing a good job with the glove for a bit over 2 chances per game...is that worth more than what he brings with the bat 4-5 PA a game?  it's 2024 and we got glenn beckert 2.0 manning 3rd base.

this is a tauchman or cooper DH situation based on bat, alone.  cooper is 3/7 with a double off eovaldi if you want to play the most successful matchup.

anyway, i hope this is a temporary thing, not business as usual for the rest of the season.  it will be telling if morel is not used at 3rd when an extreme fly ball pitcher like imanaga is on the mound.
