Cubs Make Guest Appearance at Camp Day

Having been left off the Cubs NLDS roster and apparently not having anything else better to do, Sean Marshall, Will Ohman, and Craig Monroe participated in the Cubs Arizona Instructional League team's "Camp Day" at Fitch Park this morning. While Monroe put on an awesome BP power display worthy of a big leaguer on Field #2, Marshall and Ohman faced-off in the weekly Camp Day intrasquad game on Field #3. Looking ever bit as rusty as one might expect of a pitcher who has made only three appearances in the last month, Marshall went five innings (71 pitches), giving up one run on ten hits and one walk. He threw 48 strikes and 23 balls, and had an 8/1 GB/FB ratio. But at least he is staying stretched-out should he be needed to replace an injured starting pitcher sometime during the post-season. Ohman pitched just one inning (the top of the 1st), dispatching prospects Darwin Barney, Jonathan Wyatt, and Tony Thomas 1-2-3 on just nine pitches (seven strikes and two balls), the outs coming on an easy 1-3 bounce-out, a lazy F-8, and a K-swinging. Here is today's abridged box score: LINEUPS SQUAD "A" 1. Darwin Barney, SS (1-4, RBI, CS) 2. Jonathan Wyatt, CF (2-3, SB) 3. Tony Thomas, 2B (0-2, BB, 2 K) 4. Marquez Smith, 3B (1-3, R, RBI, SOLO HR, K) 5. Ty Wright, LF (1-3) 6. Kyler Burke, RF (2-3) 7. Carlos Perez, C (1-1, 2B, R) 8. Josh Donaldson, DH-C (1-3, K) 9. Jovan Rosa, 1B (0-3, K, GIDP) NOTE: C. Perez left game with hamstring injury incurred while running bases in top of the 3rd inning and was not replaced in batting order. SQUAD "B" 1. Leon Johnson, CF (3-4, R, BB, K, SB) 2. Marwin Gonzalez, SS (2-4, SB, GIDP) 3. Brandon Guyer, LF (1-4, RBI) 4. Josh Vitters, 3B (0-4) 5. Cliff Andersen, RF (2-4, 2B, 2 K) 6A. Mark Reed, C (0-1, K) 6B. Steve Clevenger, C (0-2) 7. Jordan Latham - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0R, 0 BB, 0 K, 1 GIDP (7 pitches) NOTE: Maradeo pitched two innings, but both innings were terminated early due to Maradeo reaching maximum pitch count both times. Hey Phil, In the interest of accurate reporting, I believe that if there are less attendees then players, you should list the attendees in the box score by name. I believe this is the standard AP style guide procedure. :)

I attend the Cubs Arizona Instructional League Camp Day at Fitch Park in the morning, and the Cubs-D'backs NLDS Game #2 at Chase Field tonight. Do I have a good life, or what!?

And it's raining in Phoenix as we speak, so they may have to close the roof at Chase Field tonight. Oh, one more thing: GO CUBS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Love the instructional league reports and comments. Hey, I appreciate all of your posts. Can't find any place else to get the kind of info you provide. Hope to come down and watch some instructional league action next year.

Thanks for the reports, as always. Arizona Phil, is it true that Billy Muldowney had Tommy John surgery?

Navin — October 5, 2007 @ 12:19 pm Thanks AZ Phil. That’s disappointing to hear. Rough luck after he started pretty well in Peoria. Any news about Dolis? ========================= NAVIN: Dolis had season-ending surgery sometime in July-August, but I don't know if it was TJ or labrum.

Billy Muldowney didn't have TJ surgery. He had ulnar nerve transposition surgery witch has far less rehab time than TJ. He was throwing in the fall and should be 100% by spring training.

    AZ Phil,
Did you agree with the demotion of Luke Little? He'd been pretty good up until the AZ/wild pitch appearance. I know that can't jettison Smyly (just yet) so they didn't need another LHRP. Especially with Leiter effectively being a LHRP. I still thought he deserved to stay. It's not permanent. He'll be back. Lots of moves to come with Taillon, Steele and other guys coming and going.

Also, do you see Hodge being able to "control/command" his stuff to get a chance this year?
Is Arias better than Hodge?   Thanks

just waiting to hear patrick wisdom and masterboney are spotted at the airport going in opposite directions...

aj puk going for the marlins (lefty)...gotta imagine we'll see wisdom in the lineup.

someone has to make room for taillon, too.

  • crunch (view)

he's a low-level cubs star in the modern history of the cubs (c.zambrano, k.wood, r.dempster, etc), but that star has dimmed...and has been dimming since 2021.

2024 has been ugly the whole way and we're only in mid-april.  homers aside (even though there's been 7 in 17ip) he gave up 29 hits in 20 spring innings and 31 in 17 regular season innings.

he's pretty much only got 2 pitches at this point in his career and the mix isn't fooling anyone.  he threw a noticable amount more curves in his last start to add to the mix and it didn't help his issues.  he don't have many moves left to break out.

Definitely needs a 10 day stint for the hangnail - have to nip those things in the bud or suffer the consequences (ie, more opponent home run derby, etc)

Thanks for checking and yeah, that’s a double ouch

  • Sonicwind75 (view)

Believe you are correct, checked and appears Cubs have a $2.51 million obligation to Barnhart this season per Cot's Contracts.  Also paying Trey Mancini $7mil this season.  Ouch.

m.busch had 0hr and 2 doubles when he was last at wrigley.

we'll probably see a few more of his jerseys in the seats when they return tomorrow.

wonder who will go down for taillon.  hey hendricks, you got a hangnail or something?

  • Eric S (view)

Nice work by Wesneski with some solid defense behind him and the late tack on runs were welcome. Gladly take a 5-4 West Coast swing, particularly down two key starting pitchers … Now just don’t get swept by the Marlins for Pete’s sake.

dansby takes the team lead in SB today after a SB with 2 SB total.  the team has 3.  madrigal has the other one.

cubs also have 7 triples, 7 players each.
