Just 16 days short of four years ago, the Cubs hooked up with Willis in Miami, Aramis Ramirez clubbed a first-inning grand slam, and every Cub fan on the planet was scrambling to figure out who he would have to bribe, suck up to, or kill in order to get himself a World Series ticket. Now only Ramirez, Carlos Zambrano and Kerry Wood remain from that star-crossed Cub team, and the sights will be set a little lower for the moment, with the focus on getting the Cubs one step closer to locking up the NL Central. Willis was a winner in his only start against the Cubs back in May. Lilly lost to the Marlins in the finale of that same miserable series, a three-game Florida sweep in Wrigley that left the home team 22-29, six games behind the first-place Brewers, and looking almost completely hopeless. At cubs.com, Carrie Muskat points out that the 9-4 Cub loss on 5/29 was so bad, it prompted a players-only meeting before the game on 5/30...which the Cubs then went out and lost 9-0 behind Lilly. I'm glad it's now and not then. Among the current Cubs, Alfonso Soriano has had the most luck against the Florida lefty (8-for-17 with a home run). Overall, the Cubs have won 10 of 12; the Marlins have lost 7 of 8.

I am going to hijack this thread like AZ Phil's got hijacked... So back to the Instructional league game - nice to see Vitters take a couple of walks. Mateo looked OK, pitching two innings of shutout ball and getting ground ball after ground ball with a hard-driving sinker, although he did surrender three ground singles along the way. If I were to assume that groundballs in AZ in September to an infield of guys in there first year of professional ball is not the quickest way to success, would you agree with me, or is the field kept in close approximation of a ML diamond?

Froggy went a courtin' he did ride, crambone... She'll be comin' round that mountain when she comes... I've been working on the railroad... If you're ever down in Texas, look me up...

I love symmetry. So earlier in the season, the Cubs were well under .500 and ran into a Marlin team that swept us. Now at the end of the season things are reversed and we are well over .500. Perhaps fate will allow us to return the favor and all but guaranteeing us a trip to the playoffs. We just need StL to take one off them Brewers and I will feel so much better.

I LIKED THE FIRED UP CHAD BETTER! WHERE'S THE ADRENALINE? WHERE'S THE IN-YOUR-FACE COCKINESS? GO CUBS GO!!! LET'S KICK ASS!!

andy I am so jittery right now i can barely walk yet get fired up. I want to crawl under my bed and hide. ok FUCK THAT... I SAY WE HAVE OURSELVES AN OLD FASHIONED FISH-FRY!!!!!!! WHO'S WITH ME!!!!??!???!!!!?!?!?!

I remember thinking "Holy %$^&*, we're in the Series" after Ramirez's GS. Oops.

I think it was a sweep in Miami last year that made me think the season was officially over.

"I think it was a sweep in Miami last year that made me think the season was officially over." Maybe a Cubs sweep in Miami this year will make you realize that the post season is officially (almost) just starting? Again, symmetry!

Damnit. Can we stop seeing with Monroe in CF? His .220/.304/.317 ain't cuttin' it.

Well 3 wins puts us into what I consider the 'post season', though technically I guess it is considered part of the regular season. I have trouble thinking of symmetry, I think more along the lines of 'man, it's been a long time since we beet the marlins and some of those HR's we pounded out against the Pirates would be warning track outs (or maybe doubles) in Prolphin Stadium.

Neal, I know that 3 wins does not clinch the division but I really doubt that the Brewers are going to sweep the Cards and Pad. So our 3 wins (almost - did you miss the almost last time?) puts us in the post season. For the record a 1 game playoff counts as the regular season.

Ahh, but the almost could apply to the date (the post season starts on the 2nd) rather than on the clinchidness of the title. Anyway it looks good for the Cubs and it seems like we have historically roughed up the D-Train pretty well so I like the chances to lop one off our magic number tonight. I full expect the Brewers to win five of six. Really the only tough pitcher they face is Young, and the way the Pads are going they may have nothing to play for by Saturday.

Nice to see Pinhead is swinging back into his overmanaging mode. Intentional walks in the first inning? Genius! Hopefully the Cubs will start sacrifcing if they can get a runner on in the 2nd.

Rotoworld is saying Dunn will have knee surgery on Wednesday. So no Dunn and Griffey should equal Cubs sweep this weekend.

i can't recall a team more inclined to swing at the first pitch immediately following a walk. hopefully, the decide to show up tomorrow night.

How could a team come flat on a game like today? It absolutely amazes me. Maybe Lou should get fiery.

..and LaRussa's "Look, I'm a genius!" move of batting the pitcher 8th backfires. 2nd and 3rd, 2 outs, #7 hitter up...and the Brewers intentionally walk him to get to Looper, who K's with the bat on his shoulder. Gee, Tony, given how your team has crumbled --maybe go back to a normal batting order? Looks like the Cubs will need to win 4 of their last 5 to win the division -- Brewers are taking no prisoners at home, and the Cards and Pods are dead.

Why can't the Cubs beat this team? One lousy inning. Hits by the 7, 8 and 9 hitters. Why does this sound familiar?

Yeah, now Chad has got me nervous. If MIL wins, which they are 4-1 right now thru 5, the magic number will still be 4 and the Cubs will be up 2 games with 5 to play. Still think the Cubs will do it, but doubt is definitely creeping in. Hold on for the ride...

NOW ITS MY FAULT?!??!?!?!?!?!!?!?

Chad: "NOW ITS MY FAULT?!??!?!?!?!?!!?!?" HA HA. I gotta blame someone right now, maybe someone else will step up and be the scapegoat tomorrow...:)

Reason #1,099 to hate the Cardinals... Cubs now 0-4 vs. the Fish. Cue the ominous music. Good thing they are on the road, so they can't feel the panic that has crept in since Sunday.

Cards load the bases with one out in the 6th, but don't score. There's your ballgame. Two up with 5 to play. Funny...a few days ago, that would sounded great...

happ, right hamstring tightness, day-to-day (hopefully 0 days).

    he will be reevaluated tomorrow.

I guess I'm not looking for that type of AB

    Just a difference of opinion

I don’t see Tauchman as a weak link in any position. He simply adds his value in a different way.

I don’t know that we gain much by putting him in the outfield - Happ, Bellinger and Suzuki and Tauchman all field their positions well. If you’re looking for Taucnman’s kind of AB in a particular game I don’t see why it can’t come from DH.

  • Childersb3 (view)

Tauchman gets a pinch hit RBI single with a liner to RF. This is his spot. He's a solid 4th OF. But he isn't a DH.

He takes pitches. Useful. I still believe in having good hitters.

You don't want your DH to be your weak link (other than your C maybe)

bit of a hot take here, but i'm gonna say it.

the 2024 marlins don't seem to be good at doing baseballs.

Phil, will the call up for a double header restart that 15 days on assignment for a pitcher? Like will wesneski’s 15 days start yesterday, or if he’s the 27th man, will that mean 15 days from tomorrow?

I hope that makes sense. It sounds clearer in my head.

Tauchman obviously brings value to the roster as a 4th outfielder who can and should play frequently. Him appearing frequently at DH indicated that the team lacks a valuable DH.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

Totally onboard with your thoughts concerning today’s lineup. Not sure about your take on Tauchman though.

The guy typically doesn’t pound the ball out out of the park, and his BA is quite unimpressive. But he brings something unique to the table that the undisciplined batters of the past didn’t. He always provides a quality at bat and he makes the opposing pitcher work because he has a great eye for the zone and protects the plate with two strikes exceptionally well. In addition to making him a base runner more often than it seems through his walks, that kind of at bat wears a pitcher down both mentally and physically so that the other guys who may hit the ball harder are more apt to take advantage of subsequent mistakes and do their damage.

I can’t remember a time when the Cubs valued this kind of contribution but this year they have a couple of guys doing it, with Happ being the other. It doesn’t make for gaudy stats but it definitely contributes to winning ball games. I do believe that’s why Tauchman has garnered so much playing time.

Miles Mastrobuoni cannot be recalled until he has spent at least ten days on optional assignment, unless he is recalled to replace a position player who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, Bereavement / Family Medical).

And for a pitcher it's 15 days on optional assignment before he can be recalled, unless he is replacing a pitcher who is placed on an MLB inactive list (IL, Paternity, or Bereavement / Family Medical).

And a pitcher (or a position player, but almost always it's a pitcher) can be recalled as the 27th man for a doubleheader regardless of how many days he has been on optional assignment, but then he must be sent back down again the next day.

That's why the Cubs had to wait as long as they did to send Jose Cuas down and recall Keegan Thompson. Thompson needed to spend the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he could be recalled (and he spent EXACTLY the first 15 days of the MLB regular season on optional assignment before he was recalled).

    Indeed they do TJW!

For the record I’m not in favor of solely building a team through paying big to free agents. But I’m also of the mind that when you develop really good players, get them signed to extensions that buy out a couple years of free agency, including with team options. And supplement the home grown players with free agent splashes or using excess prospects to trade for stars under team control for a few years. Sort of what Atlanta does, basically. Everyone talks about the dodgers but I feel that Atlanta is the peak organization at the current moment.

That said, the constant roster churn is very Rays- ish. What they do is incredible, but it’s extremely hard to do which is why they’re the only ones frequently successful that employ that strategy. I definitely do not want to see a large market team like ours follow that model closely. But I don’t think free agent frenzies is always the answer. It’s really only the Dodgers that play in that realm. I could see an argument for the Mets too. The Yankees don’t really operate like that anymore since the elder Steinbrenner passed. Though I would say the reigning champions built a good deal of that team through free agent spending.
