Some juggling of the 2, 4, and 5 spots in the Cubs lineup today, and Theriot sits for another game.  Ramirez plays for Uribe, otherwise the same lineup for the Sox.  Today also marks the half-way point in the Cubs' season, with a win putting the Cubs exactly on pace for 100.  Cubs beat Vazquez pretty easily last time; this is Gallagher's first time facing the Sox.

AZ PHIL UPDATE: Prior to the game, the Cubs placed LHP Scott Eyre on the 15-day DL (groin), and recalled RHP Jose Ascanio from AAA Iowa.

Ascanio just recently returned to the Iowa Cubs from Venezuela, after missing about ten days (Bereavement Leave and then visa problems) while attending his brother's funeral.

Although Ascanio is one of the Cubs top pitching prospects, and while he does have MLB experience, the Cubs probably would have preferred to bring up a pitcher who can throw more than one inning (Ascanio is Iowa's closer), but Kevin Hart (concussion) and Randy Wells (leg) are injured, and MLB veterans Mike Burns and Hector Carrasco threw a lot of pitches the last couple of days. (The Cubs could transfer RHP Chad Fox to the 60-day DL if they need to open a slot on the 40-man roster for Wells, Burns, or Carrasco at some point down the line).

I fully expect the Cubs to get swept tomorrow in Comiskullar. These teams are separated by a game or two in the history of this series, so its about right. The entire team is in a funk, and undergoing myriad injuries, which as we all see, puts us at a major talent disadvantage on the roster. We still are in first place, but with a couple more sweeps in short order will allow both the Cardinals and Brew to catch us. Fuck You LaRussa!

We can only hope that Sean Marshall has the game of his life tomorrow so we can salvage a game. I'm not overly optimistic but stranger things have happened. Aram not getting the ball up for a sac fly was horrible but that would have only tied the game, I wouldn't have been really confident we would win the game but it would have obviously better than not scoring there. Quentin's HR was kind of a fluke. Half swing opposite field job. Crede's play on Soto was probably the biggest of the game. So much for everyone who wanted to move Lee down in the lineup? See he's still good :)

A-Ram has sucked since he turned 30. When will Vitters be ready? (I kid.) Somebody check Alexi Ramirez's bat -- he weighs 58 pounds, and take s alow and away slider out to LF? Please. Pretty gutsy performance by Gallagher -- the wind hurt him a couple of times.

I'm not worried about our offense. Our starting pitching went to shit this week. That's going to be the key. The injuries are catching up with us. We've lost 7 of 11, but still have at least a 3.5 game lead, which is probably what it was before the funk began. We'll snap out of it, as long as the starting pitching keeps us in ball games.

your team is leading by 3...you have a 2 for 3 day going...you have a bad AB and follow it up by going back to the dugout and throwing bats/helmets...again... kevin youkilis is quickly trying to lay his claim to the "most selfish and self-centered" baseball player ever award. how many times do your own teammates have to call you out...or take a swing at you...before that chills out? "motivated" is one thing..."hyped" is one thing...but this level of personal greed goes beyond what anyone could ever label tony gwynn with. at least gwynn didn't act like a privileged 5 year old when his days didn't go swell.

Cancel all September plans -- the last 3 weeks of the season should be great fun -- 6 games each against the Cards and the Brewers, with a 7-game "tell me what happens, I can't bear to watch" season-ending 7-game trip to NY and MIL. Yikes. FOX got their money's worth today. Great game, lousy result. One of Lilly, Marquis or Gallagher need to be consistently good in the 2nd half of the season. Better health would be nice, too.

gallagher got better after lous motivational speech, hopefully lou gives marshall that same speech but before the bottom of the first, this game is marshalls chance to uphis value or he can get a ticket to iowa.

Jared Weaver is throwing a no-no and still losing 1-0 after 6. He had a fielding error and then the catcher had a throwing error on a steal by Kemp. Can you still be credited with a no-hitter if you only throw 8 IP (game at Chavez Ravine)? I think the rule is you have to throw 9, because a Pirates pitcher went 12 1/3 with one and didnt get credit. (Update): Vin Scully is better than Google. Yes you can legally have a 8 IP No-no. Weaver is currently out of the game after 6.

corey provis on wgn radio said... Z pitched 3 sets of 20 pitches, no problems. Expect his to throw on the side tues and start Fri vs Stl Theriot in the lineup tonight bats 2nd at SS

South Bend just lost the lead in the bottom of the 9th on the weirdest scenario, ever.

It's absolutely pouring rain....men on 1st and 2nd, 1out....JPatterson asks for a new ball, but no time out was called....he throws the old ball toward the dugout (not sure if it rolled out of play).....the ump declares the runners get two bases each so one run scores. Then a single up the middle ties the game.

The rain was coming down in buckets at this point.

    Just weird

...and bellinger is gone in the 7th because of that 2nd blown chance and the wall he bounced off of...

hopefully his rib cage/shoulder feels better tomorrow, we just got happ back.

    Phil,

Any thoughts on Y. Rojas' stuff and Y. Melendez's game (I believe I've asked about him before, sorry)?

wow, things are moving fast.  hopefully it continues.

morel with 4 clean plays in 4 innings...showed off his 100000000mph arm a couple times.

cody bellinger not having a good 4th, though...5 run leads are handy when your CF is making your pitcher have a 5-out inning.  2nd blown chance was ruled a hit even though it went in/out of his glove...1st was lost in the lights, also ruled a hit.

oh yeah, totally, i was just chiming about why i fan like i fan.

i would like nothing more than hendricks to keep on hendricks'ing.  guys with his stuff can throw for a long, long time as long as it works.

he velocity is actually up a minor amount this year.  it's really "damn" when a guy like him not only has gas in the tank, but it's looking like it was years ago.  he added a curve a few years ago and it helped a little bit, but he's throwing it less and less while the fb/change combo are less effective.

CRUNCH—There is no one person in this community I’m talking about.  My remarks were not directed at you or anyone, but at a tone I’ve noticed lately.

You have a great, dry sense of humor and there is thought behind your comments.   You and I don’t always agree but I always understand your position.

Lastly, and I’ll be quiet, I agree with you on Hendricks.  We can dislike the recent performance but still love the guy.  Lots of questions about his future.

myself, i make a good amount of outrageously unrealistic comments that are sometimes "violent"...like my recent suggestion of "pulling the bandaid off" by having hendricks throw every inning of every game until he's on the IL.

i would hope any athlete that cares about what is written on the internet realizes how casual fans can be about treating their lives like scripted TV characters that don't have real lives.  it's not an excuse to do it, but there's a lot of it out there.

but yeah, in real life i'm rooting for guys to have long and healthy careers even if i'm not happy with current performances...except for some guys...and i'm pretty sure i don't leave grey area for those comments...and almost all of them are not good humans whether they're playing baseball or not...

hendricks was getting a good amount of boos in his last game.  i would bet a million that he will get a standing O every time he visits wrigley in his post-playing days, or a return with a new team should his career continue...or if he comes back and puts in an oldschool good performance.

What are the chances we can back off on gloating over other people’s misfortune?  One of the things I appreciate about the TCR community is that the remarks are more productive and add to how I like to follow the game.

Lately, however, I’m reading comments that are just mean.  If I were an MLB player, I would hate to get a back or finger injury and have someone write ‘hurrah!  I hope we never see him again!’  Especially when it is someone we were praising not long ago.  I’m not saying ‘don’t express how you feel’ but some comments lately seem downright mean spirited.  Stuff I expect from other communities but don’t often see here.  The TCR community has always spoken the truth but never with such a dark tone.

Just my two cents.  I hope Hendricks comes back and is the professor we all know. He can pitch for the Cubs as long as he wants in my book.
