Altuve Triples Up Rockies Twice at Riverview

Brayan Altuve smacked two triples, scored a run, and drove one in, Frank Hernandez drilled two singles, scored two runs, and knocked-in another, Wally Soto ripped an RBI single, walked twice, and scored a run, and Ed Howard singled, walked, stole a base, and scored a run, as the Cubs rallied late to edge the Rockies 5-4 in a Cactus League Extended Spring Training game played Tuesday morning on Field #6 at the Riverview Baseball Complex in Mesa, AZ.

Francisco Garcia doubled and scored, singled, and walked twice, Dayan Jorge roped an RBI double, and Felix Tena contributed an RBI single for the Rockies (the Rocks had only five hits in the game).

The game was pre-planned as an eight inning contest.

Prior to the game, LHP Stephen Gonsalves, LHP Scott Kobos, and RHP Mathew Peters threw "live" BP on Field #5. Among the hitters were rehabbers Alexander Canario (who took Kobos deep over the LF fence), D. J. Artis, and Jose Escobar. As is the case with Jairo Diaz, Escobar is listed as a left-handed hitter at milb.com, but he is actually a switch-hitter.

In EXST Cubs roster news, RHRP Daniel Palencia has completed his work in the Mesa Pitch Lab (he also pitched in three Cactus League Extended Spring Training games over the past eight days), and he has been assigned to AAA Iowa. (Keep in mind that Palencia is Rule 5 Draft eligible post-2023).

Thanks Phil!

I heard extended spring training is ending soon, is that true, and if so, do ACL and DSL games start soon?

Also, wondering if you think Suriel will be promoted to Myrtle Beach soon, and where you see Howard being placed after his rehab is over? (he seems to be playing really well, prayerfully it's onwards and upwards with him from this point forward!)

Very well played game all around tonight.

best starter and 2 top hitters from the team gone...and they keep on winning.

little ahead of myself here, but the RSox got 9 outs to find 6+ runs.

Richard Gallardo just left the Smokies game with an arm injury after going to the ground following a pitch. Doesn’t sound good at all.

Phil, do you think Wiggins will start out in ACL?

The level of conversation on this site is intelligent, reasoned and informative. Miles ahead of other Cub sites.

Prior to the Cactus League game at Papago Park, three Cubs pitchers threw "live" BP on Field 1 at the Cubs Sloan Park complex, including RHRP Ethan Roberts (June 2022 TJS) and Cubs 2023 2nd round draft pick RHP Jaxon Wiggins (February 2023 TJS).

Wiggins last threw "live" BP three weeks ago before being shut down for a couple of weeks, and this was the first time Roberts has thrown to hitters in almost two years.

    25 pitches (11 strikes)
    no batted balls in play
two walks (Suriel and J. Diaz)

    two fouls
    three called strikes

wall stole a HR from busch...double.  nice to see him destroy a curve ball.

upon further viewing, that might not have been a homer in too many parks...it had a lot of hang time, though.
