Looks like the Cubs just found their next left fielder.

AZ Phil, We have drafted 12 JC players so far. I don't remember us drafting that many JC's before. I am assuming that JC's might be easier to sign away from college commitments or are just cheaper in general. Looks to me as though the front office wanted to stay pretty cheap this year. That's just a guess of course. I did like the Reggie Golden pick. I have a friend in AL whose the Athletic Trainer for a HS that played Wetumpka. He said that Golden is lightning quick, and built like a truck. I don't think the Cubs draft enough guys like that. Some analyst said that Golden seemed to him like a TB Rays type of draftee. I see that as a positive. As far as Simpson goes, I simply say that only the Cubs could make that kind of splash. I hope the kid does really well, but you have to say wow to the pick. Wilken has a got to have a big pair to do that with our fan base. When the player drafted is shocked to picked, and Jim Callis of BA can't remember where the kid is from or what hand he is, you know it was off the grid.

Just from my experience in Iowa, many high school kids will take the JC or CC route because they did not get recruited heavily enough from D-1 programs. This might be because they play for a small school or the area is not looked at closely by the schools, etc. A place like the University of Iowa, for example, which is a pretty bad D-1 baseball program, still only has about half of its roster comprised of native Iowa players. So that is only about 3 high school kids in the state each year who will get a chance to play there. Maybe a few more at Iowa State and Northern Iowa, but the reality is that a lot of talented kids get left out. I know one top player in large school Iowa HS back when I was playing who was recruited by Iowa to walk on and try out. He said he showed up and 23 of the 25 roster spots were already set aside for scholarship players. So he has 2 days of workouts to compete with 30 other guys for the remaining two spots. He didn't get one. And that was it. At that point, he had already been there for more than a semester, made friends, etc. Transferring at that point, just didn't make sense. So if you are someone who doesn't get recruited for D-1 but still has dreams of doing D-1 or perhaps beyond, you have two options. You could go the D-III route, but unless you put up ungodly numbers somehow, no one will hear of you and you will not be recruited by D-1 schools or scouted. It happens, but it is rare. People play D-III mostly for the fun of it, and have to balance baseball with classes. By choosing that route, you are basically signaling to others that this is as good as you think you can be. It's like you self-select out of the pool for recruiting/scouting. But junior colleges and community colleges are different. Many of those that have baseball programs are essentially feeder schools. You play and practice a lot (outside of NCAA rules), actual course commitments are nominal, and the coaches are well-connected with D-1 coaches and scouts. Most are 2-year institutions, so the whole point - either athletically or academically - is to transfer. I'm sure it varies around the country, but in Iowa anyway, that is who attends JCs and CCs to play baseball.

Submitted by The Real Neal on Wed, 06/09/2010 - 1:58pm. My question ties in a bit with the JC thread for Phil or any of our knowledgeable commentors - can you elaborate on the frequency of the JC route for baseball players? Is it that they think they were under-appreciated or scouted in HS so they go to JC to build their credentials for a real school or MLB or is it that they're just too poor students to get into 4 year schools - or is it something else? =============================================== REAL NEAL: Some players go to a JC because they don't have the grades to get into a four-year college, some transfer to a JC after spending their freshman year at a four-year college while they look for another four-year school to transfer to, and some don't want to wait until they turn 21 to get drafted by an MLB team (JC players are eligible for the draft every year, and some get selected two or three times before finally agreeing to sign). It used to be that clubs retained the rights to JC draft picks for a full year (until the next Rule 4 Draft), allowing clubs to "Draft & Follow" their JC draft picks through an additional season before deciding whether to give the player the bonus he wants. (There were usually about two or three new players who would arrive at Fitch Park every May after signing with the Cubs as a "Draft & Follow"). But the Draft & Follow Rule was eliminated a couple of years ago, so now clubs have to decide by the August 15th deadline whether they want the JC player at the player's asking price. That's why it's kind of odd that Wilken decided to select so many JC players this year, since their value is considerably less now than was the case prior to the Draft & Follow Rule being eliminated,

Submitted by Childersb3 on Wed, 06/09/2010 - 1:34pm. ======================================= CHILDERS: Some JC players are anxious to turn pro, while others have fairly strong commitments to transfer to a four-year school. They really aren't cheaper than any other type. In general, the easiest players to sign are college seniors, because they have very little leverage, so most of the best college players sign after their junior year. High school players are usually the toughest to sign, because they all have someplace they can go if they don't sign, even if it's a small NAIA college, or a Division 2 school, or a JC. That's why HS players get the best deals, why they can sometimes hold out for more money than they are actually worth based upon their performance on the field. It's not that unusual for a HS kid to get drafted in the 20's and then get "4th round money" to give up his college plans, even if all the club is buying is just risky long-term potential.

From Jim Callis' chat... http://www.baseballamerica.com/today/draft/chat/2010/2610175.html Ty (Chicago): Hayden who? Please, please explain this to me, and to all Cubs fans. Thanks. Jim Callis: The Cubs saw Hayden Simpson throw 92-97 twice in four days at the D-II World Series, and they think he'll have four average or better pitches, love the makeup, believe he could move quickly. I don't think that was the consensus on him, but the Cubs saw him very well and were afraid another team with multiple picks might draft him before they could pick again. Stunned me, though. Dave (Chicago): How bad was the Cubs draft? Any reason to be excited about Reggie Golden? Jim Callis: Golden was one of the better athletes in the draft. I didn't mind Micah Gibbs in the third round, VG receiver and leader, should hit decently. They got a fine pair of in-state sleepers in Eric Jokisch (11th) and Ryan Hartman (16th). Matt Stites (33rd) is one of my favorite third-day picks so far. Boomer (Chicago): So, Hayden Simpson, he was Tim Wilken's "Best Player Available" and was just afraid he'd be gone by round 2....right? As long as the Cubs drafted "BPA" I'm going to give Wilken the benefit of the doubt. Jim Callis: That is the case yet. Wilken said he had lost a couple of guys in the last couple of drafts and didn't want to take the chance this year. This was not a signability pick. I think that's all for Cubs questions.

Virtually everyone on twitter: Cubs recalled Chad Tracy from Triple-A and placed Aramis Ramirez on the 15-day DL (retroactive to June 8) with a left thumb contusion. Reds catcher Ryan Hanigan has a broken thumb, I wonder who will get off the dl first

HAWKS!!! What an incredible game. I can only imaging how I would feel if the Cubs win the big one. Roenick broke down on camera on the National broadcast during the wrap. He is Hawk through-and-through. Too bad Rocky's dad couldn't see the light.

Fuck Rocky's dad. If he was still alive, Toews would've probably hoisted the Cup last night for a different team. If he never owned the team in the first place, I'd still be a Hawks fan. I admit, I rooted against them to win. But now that they're the champs, it doesn't excuse the fact that Hossa is a scumbag and Bill Wirtz was the worst owner in NHL history (something like the worst 3B in Cubs history). It's good for the city. I'm happy for the people and most of the team. But seriously, Bill Wirtz was a motherfucker and didn't deserve to see this happen, and luckily never would have if he were still alive today.

I thought you were talking about Rocky Balboa's dad. :) --- nothing like going on a sly tangent... http://www.page2live.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/stallone2-300x268.j…
Sylvester Stallone was a difficult birth, yanked from his mother's womb by a doctor's forceps that severed a facial nerve.
His father, a beautician, moved the family to Washington DC, where he opened a beauty school. His mother, a flamboyant woman who has become something of a celebrity in her own right, opened a women's gymnasium in 1952, called Barbella's. They divorced when Stallone was 11, and he was later sent to a special high school for "troubled kids," where he was voted "most likely to end up in the electric chair".

Javier Assad started the Lo-A game (Myrtle Beach versus Stockton) on the Cubs backfields on Wednesday as his final Spring Training tune-up. He was supposed to throw five innings / 75 pitches. However, I was at the minor league road games at Fitch so I didn't see Assad pitch.

Here are the Cubs pitchers reports from Tuesday afternoon's Cardinals - Cubs game art Sloan Park in Mesa:

    SHOTA IMANAGA
    FB: 90-92
    CUT: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
    SPLIT: 81-84
    CV: 73-74
COMMENT: Worked three innings plus two batters in the fourth... allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits (six singles and two doubles) walked one, and struck out six (four swinging), with a 1/2 GO/AO... he threw 73 pitches (52 strikes - 10 swing & miss - 19 foul balls)... surrendered one run in the top of the 1st on a one-out double off Cody Bellinger's glove in deep straight-away CF followed one out later by two consecutive two-out bloop singles, allowed two runs (one earned) in the 2nd after retiring the first two hitters (first batter had a nine-pitch AB with four consecutive two-strike foul balls before being retired 3 -U) on a two-out infield single (weak throw on the run by Nico Hoerner), a hard-contact line drive RBI double down the RF line, and an E-1 (missed catch) by Imanaga on what should been an inning-ending 3-1 GO, gave up another run in the 3rd on a two-out walk on a 3-2 pitch and an RBI double to LF, and two consecutive singles leading off the top of the 4th before being relieved (runners were ultimately left stranded)... threw 18 pitches in the 1st inning (14 strikes - two swing & miss, one on FB and the other on a SL - four foul balls), 24 pitches in the 2nd inning (17 strikes - three swing & miss, one on FB, two SPLIT - six foul balls), 19 pitches in the 3rd inning (13 strikes - seven swing & miss, three on SL, two on SPLIT, one on FB - three foul balls), and 12 pitches without retiring a batter in the top of the 4th (8 strikes - no swing & miss - four foul balls)... Imanaga throws a lot of pitches per inning, but it's not because he doesn't throw strikes...  if anything, he throws too many strikes (he threw 70% strikes on Tuesday)... while he gets a ton of swing & miss (and strikeouts), he also induces a lot of foul balls because he doesn't try to make hitters chase his pitches by throwing them out of the strike zone... rather, he uses his very diverse pitch mix to get swing & miss (and lots of foul balls as well)... he also is a fly ball pitcher who will give up more than his share of HR during the course of the season...

    JOE NAHAS
    FB: 90-92
    SL: 83-85
    CV: 80-81
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day... relieved Imanaga with runners at first and second and no outs in the top of the 4th, and after an E-2 catcher's interference committed by Miguel Amaya loaded he bases, Nahas struck out the side (one swinging & two looking)... threw 16 pitches (11 strikes - two swinging)...

    YENCY ALMONTE
    FB: 89-92
    CH: 86
    SL: 79
COMMENT: Threw an eight-pitch 5th (five strikes - no swing & miss), with a 5-3 GO for the first out and an inning-ending 4-6-3 DP after a one-out single... command was a bit off but he worked through it...

    FRANKIE SCALZO JR
    FB: 94-95
    CH: 88
    SL: 83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 6th inning... got the first outs easily (a P-5 and a 4-3 GO) on just three pitches, before allowing three consecutive two-out hard-contact hits (a double and two singles), with the third hit on pitch # 9 resulting in a runner being thrown out at the plate by RF Christian Franklin for the third out of the inning...

    MICHAEL ARIAS
    FB: 94-96
    CH: 87-89
    SL: 82-83
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and allowed a hard-contact double on the third pitch of the 7th inning (a 96 MPH FB), and the runner came around to score on a 4-3 GO and a WP... gave up two other loud contact outs (an L-7 and an F-9)... threw 18 pitches (only 10 strikes - only one swing & miss)... stuff is electric but still very raw and he continues to have difficulty commanding it, and while he has the repertoire of a SP, he throws too many pitches-per-inning to be a SP and not enough strikes to be a closer... he is most definitely still a work-in-progress...

    ZAC LEIGH:
    FB: 93-94
    CH: 89
    SL: 81-83
    CV: 78
COMMENT: Was called up from the AA Tennessee group at Minor League Camp for the day and tossed a 1-2-3 8th (4-3 GO, K-swinging on a sweeper, K-looking on another sweeper)... threw 14 pitches (11 strikes - one swing & miss - eight foul balls)... kept pumping pitches into the strike zone but had difficulty putting hitters away (ergo a ton of foul balls)... FB velo is nowhere near the 96-98 MPH it was a couple of years ago when he was a Top 30 prospect, but his secondaries are better...

    JOSE ROMERO:
    FB: 93-95
    SL: 82-84
COMMENT: Was called up from the Hi-A South Bend group at Minor League Camp for the day and worked the 9th (14 pitches - only six strikes- no swing & miss) and allowed a solo HR after two near-HR fly outs to the warning track, before getting a 3-1 GO to end the inning... it was like batting practice when he wasn't throwing pitches out of the strike zone...

AZ Phil, speaking of Jordan Wicks having better command when he tires a bit, I remember reading about Dennis Lamp 40 years ago and his sinker that was better after 3 or 4 innings when he would tire a bit and get more sink with a little less speed on the pitch.  The key for Lamp was getting to the 4th inning.
