Evening Wrap-up

Some of this has already been reported in the previous thread, but rumor has it that there are a few jerks out there who don't read every comment of every thread.  I can't imagine who would be such a loser, it's just something I heard...

For those ignorant non-message board reading unwashed masses, I sadly report that Henry Blanco's brother has been murdured in Venezuela.  Carlos Blanco had been kidnapped two weeks earlier and held for ransom.  For several years now, Venezuelan players in MLB have had cause to worry about their families' safety back home.  Before making news for his attempt to use a machette to, uh, creatively beat out the fire he had started by dousing five employees with gasoline, Ugueth Urbina had to cope with his mother's kidnapping.  The personal security measures that Venezuelan players have felt compelled to take since then are eye-opening.  Our sympathies are with the Blanco family.

Our sympathies are also with Dusty Baker, if he thinks Kerry Wood will sign with Cincinatti in order to serve as set-up guy to Francisco Cordero.

The latest rah-rah piece from Muskat informs us that the Cubs like their current roster as they enter the winter meetings.  As well they should.

Finally, there's some phony-baloney corporate-sponsored baseball awards that the fans can vote on, and that carry about as much weight and meaning as your vote on ratemypoo.com  (I didn't link to it, on the grounds that no good could possibly come of it.)

My votes:

Pujols

Halladay

Soto

LouPa

Mariano

Marmol

McLouth

Zambrano

Johnson

Young

Maier

Friedman

Price

Victim # 20 busted for drugs, nice mug shot-

http://deadspin.com/5100971/operation-shutdown-sti...

That list of defensive plays was pretty non-inspiring. I would have to go with Ramirez.

Whatever you do, don't look at the Top 20 for ratemypoo.com. I haven't felt that nauseated since the Cubs resigned Neifi Perez.

I TOLD you no good would come of it, Guancous.

Trans finally comes up with his first post since God knows when and rating poo immediately rises to the surface. what gives?

White sox trade Vasquez to the Braves:

Vasquez and Logan for Tyler Flowers, infielder Brent Lillibridge, Class-A third baseman Jon Gilmore and 20-year-old left-hander Santos Rodriguez.

see below:
http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whit...

Now what does that mean the Braves are out of the Peavy sweepstakes...does that mean we are it or you think this is one of the two pitchers they are targeting....or is this the trade and the other is a free agent...

The winter meetings should be interesting!

the braves have already stated that they are moving on and will not pursue a trade for Peavy. this is just further proof of that.

Vazquez costs more than Peavy over the next couple of years. I'm sure that the Padres aren't interested in him. I doubt the Pads are interested in Boone Logan either.

It looks like Hendry is working overtime for a quality pitching prospect.

Obviously i wasn't talking about Vasquez going to the Padres....was talking about the prospects that the Braves gave up for him that may have gone to the Padres for Peavy.

Ah, the internet.

On the one hand, millions of people desperate for change used the internet to help donate over a billion dollars to get Barack Obama elected.

On the other hand, there's a website for rating poo.

Yeah, just your average folks. People like Dahsudhu Hdusahfd of Df, Hawaii with the following employer CZXVC/ZXVZXV and Uadhshgu Hduadh listed as living in Dhff, Florida employed by DASADA/SAFASF donated big bucks to Obama.

It was an inspirational outpouring. Go internet!

yeah, that 7 grand accounts for a good 90%+ of the money raised online.

i guess most of the money did come from corruption rather than joe everyman.

*runs around screaming about 9/11 conspiracies and impending socialism he read about on the internet*

lulz...internet...i've been there.

Those funds were returned. Every election both major parties deal with this. There were similar stories out of the McCain camp. There is nothing to stop citizens from contributing under fake names or giving more than the maximum allowable amounts. I could go online and donate $500 each day for 10 days to a campaign via credit card. It is then up to the campaign and the FEC to realize later that I gave more in total than I was allowed and then refund me the difference. It's not a perfect system by any means, but for the most part it works. Issues like Dahsudhu are not new to the Internent age, although it does make them more frequent. But the Internet also brings more people overall into the political process - so it's probably a wash.

Those funds were returned to who?

Shouldn't the DN Party try to get their hands on some of them? I hear they took deficit spending to a new level.

Rate my poo? Give me a Hot Karl everyday over that shit. Oh oh oh pun!

  • They've mentioned Henry Rodriguez (2013), Chris Carpenter, and Andrew Cashner as Cubs who have gone 100+. They said Rodriguez was tops at 100.8. Who knows before 2008?

  • Regarding Heyward--

He'll play regardless of what he does, just like Soriano played for seven years before they finally ditched him.

What can they do? All I can think of is they can keep hiring and firing hitting coaches until they find one who can get him to stop hitting balls with the handle of the bat.

(All those broken bats added to his paycheck is just a bit much.)

  • Lester will probably be all right.

I think Arrieta might have added too much muscle preparing for that butt-naked ESPN photo shoot. Pitchers are supposed to be loose, not muscled up.

    Seriously.

  • I have basically written off Heyward for this year -- if you are working on major swing changes in late July, you are going to struggle. Hopefully, he can be more productive at the plate next year. It will be interesting to see what they do with him if the Cardinals keep winning and close the gap. Heyward is dead last in the NL in slugging and in the bottom 5 in OPS -- yet still has a positive WAR. Hunh.

  • Has anybody in a Cub uniform ever thrown a ball 103 before?

  • He certainly looks better, no doubt, and is a different player than what we saw when he first came up. Full credit to him for changing his approach and saving his career.

But he has zero walks in 35AB since the break, and 10 in 251 AB all year. He does seem to be able to hit some pitches out of the zone, but, a guy with his pop should be drawing more walks. However, it's easy to forget he is still only 23, and probably trying to make an impact to prove he should be an everyday player.

  • The usual suspects, Molina and Wong. Gyorko drew a walk with two outs, none on. I recall us (particularly Szczur and Bryant) swinging at everything Familia threw.

  • I for one hope that Sosa comes back soon.

  • O/B interesting you should mention that. Google ESPN Science Aroldis Chapman and you'll be treated to how his mechanics and delivery are possibly historic. It's the 120% of his body stretch plus the torque. They compare him to the Unit and NRyan.

  • Amazing how much lower the production gets when Bryant runs into a mini-cold streak. He doesn't stay cold for long. If just one of Zobrist or, gulp, Heyward, gets hot, they oughta have one more really nice winning streak in them. Having a closer that you have absolute confidence in can't hurt.

  • I hope they hold onto Jimenez. Outfield depth is questionable, especially with McKinney, who struggled this year but still, gone.

Old and Blue 2 hours 46 min ago view
  • You don't think he's improved? He looks completely different out there than he did when he first came up. The last I checked his K rate was in the low 20% range - 22-23 or so. When he came up it was 40%+.

To me, what is scary about him if I'm the other guy is that he IS learning the strike zone. This guy could easily be the MVP someday.

  • So, playing .500 for the rest of the year puts them at 91 wins. You would think there is enough talent to do a little better than that, right?

The E-Man 3 hours 6 min ago view
  • First team to 60 wins! Onward to 70, 80, 90 and 100!
