Evening Wrap-up

Some of this has already been reported in the previous thread, but rumor has it that there are a few jerks out there who don't read every comment of every thread.  I can't imagine who would be such a loser, it's just something I heard...

For those ignorant non-message board reading unwashed masses, I sadly report that Henry Blanco's brother has been murdured in Venezuela.  Carlos Blanco had been kidnapped two weeks earlier and held for ransom.  For several years now, Venezuelan players in MLB have had cause to worry about their families' safety back home.  Before making news for his attempt to use a machette to, uh, creatively beat out the fire he had started by dousing five employees with gasoline, Ugueth Urbina had to cope with his mother's kidnapping.  The personal security measures that Venezuelan players have felt compelled to take since then are eye-opening.  Our sympathies are with the Blanco family.

Our sympathies are also with Dusty Baker, if he thinks Kerry Wood will sign with Cincinatti in order to serve as set-up guy to Francisco Cordero.

The latest rah-rah piece from Muskat informs us that the Cubs like their current roster as they enter the winter meetings.  As well they should.

Finally, there's some phony-baloney corporate-sponsored baseball awards that the fans can vote on, and that carry about as much weight and meaning as your vote on ratemypoo.com  (I didn't link to it, on the grounds that no good could possibly come of it.)

My votes:

Pujols

Halladay

Soto

LouPa

Mariano

Marmol

McLouth

Zambrano

Johnson

Young

Maier

Friedman

Price

That list of defensive plays was pretty non-inspiring. I would have to go with Ramirez.

Whatever you do, don't look at the Top 20 for ratemypoo.com. I haven't felt that nauseated since the Cubs resigned Neifi Perez.

White sox trade Vasquez to the Braves: Vasquez and Logan for Tyler Flowers, infielder Brent Lillibridge, Class-A third baseman Jon Gilmore and 20-year-old left-hander Santos Rodriguez. see below: http://www.chicagotribune.com/sports/baseball/whitesox/chi-081202-chica… Now what does that mean the Braves are out of the Peavy sweepstakes...does that mean we are it or you think this is one of the two pitchers they are targeting....or is this the trade and the other is a free agent... The winter meetings should be interesting!

Vazquez costs more than Peavy over the next couple of years. I'm sure that the Padres aren't interested in him. I doubt the Pads are interested in Boone Logan either. It looks like Hendry is working overtime for a quality pitching prospect.

Ah, the internet. On the one hand, millions of people desperate for change used the internet to help donate over a billion dollars to get Barack Obama elected. On the other hand, there's a website for rating poo.

Those funds were returned. Every election both major parties deal with this. There were similar stories out of the McCain camp. There is nothing to stop citizens from contributing under fake names or giving more than the maximum allowable amounts. I could go online and donate $500 each day for 10 days to a campaign via credit card. It is then up to the campaign and the FEC to realize later that I gave more in total than I was allowed and then refund me the difference. It's not a perfect system by any means, but for the most part it works. Issues like Dahsudhu are not new to the Internent age, although it does make them more frequent. But the Internet also brings more people overall into the political process - so it's probably a wash.

Rate my poo? Give me a Hot Karl everyday over that shit. Oh oh oh pun!

25 games played with a -85 run differential.  insane.

White Sox DFA Bailey Horn. I'm thinking the Cubs would love to get him back although they probably won't have a decent chance of claiming him without another swap.

WSox also call up former Cub Rafael Ortega (and additionally Tommy Pham). They are hurting and having a gawd awful April.

    White Sox DFA'd Bailey Horn.

He wasn't producing good results in Charlotte (AAA).

But Jed might bring him back with that open 40man spot. Then try the "sneak him thru waivers" gambit.

Oh my, now I will have nightmares of me sitting in the bowels of the Wrigley security detention cell.

    One more thing...

One of the reasons I come to this site...

...in addition to Arizona Phil, who is, as we all know, a treasure trove of well-written fresh information, honest evaluation, and sneaky-subtle humor regarding the entire Cub organization...

... is CubbyBlue and Tim's fantastic and timely visual takes on the Cubs (to be fair, he does have a much broader Chicago-flavored brush well beyond the Cubs).  Thanks for so many memorable images.  I am fortunate to own (one of my prize possessions) a print that I framed (55/200) of "The Last Out" with KB's shit-eating grin as he fields the series winning out of the 2016 WS.

Tim, will you visit me if I do the text security thingy and description: Tim S? Or will I find myself in a Cub detention cell.

i.e. "or send a text message to 773-839-**** with the keyword "Friendly" and include your seat location and a description of your issue.

Incredible moment. Huge part of the fun of working there is when something magic like that happens, and you get to interact with baseball fans.

That bear hug was indeed awesome. Word is that Dansby has become an outstanding clubhouse leader and that moment really demonstrated it. That reaction was one of a proud coach/mentor who’s student just excelled. I’m not even sure who was more overjoyed, Dansby or PCA. A veteran expressing that kind of unabashed support and enthusiasm for a struggling rookie is beyond fantastic to see.

BAHAHA! I've actually not seen a single fight, but can't wait to see 70 degrees for sure!

be prepared.  i'm gonna make you earn your money.

seriously, though...that's a cool as hell "retirement" assignment.  i imagine it will be better with warmer nights.
