Every once in awhile, a player that holds a special place in the hearts of Cubs fan comes back to Wrigley. And although they're wearing a different uniform, you can't help but root for them...
Oh wait, that's the beginning of Thursday's thread when Greg Maddux starts for the Padres. Today, it's Shawn Estes which most Cubs fans remember try to forget as the player who did his best to ruin the 2003 season. And just in case anyone thinks it wasn't that bad, here are his 2003 numbers:
8-11, 152.1 IP, 28 GS, 117 K, 105 BB, 5.73 ERA, 76 ERA+
But speaking of ugly numbers, the Cubs have Jason Marquis going.
His ERA is up over the 5 territory, but he's got the perfect remedy for that with the offensively-challenged Padres tonight. It's probably yet another audition for Marquis to keep his starting gig, with Lou pretty much naming Sean Gallagher to the rotation, Jon Lieber sort of hovering around and Rich Hill slowly getting back on track in Iowa.
The Cubs go for their fifth straight win tonight...that's if the rains clears up.

14th in AIH in the NL with defensive starters' run efficiency HSN 2nd best NL.
see you all in parachat.
=p
#4 OBP...
1st!
Not to mention first in Runs, Hits, and RBI.
I have to think that the change from a Dusty Baker, low walk, low strikeout, contact hitting team to a patient, high BB (2nd in NL) high strikeout (6th most in NL) team so far this year is the difference.

If we sign Edmonds, will Hendry resign, because he's been saying Pie was ready for years.
#6 Re: Game 39 Thread / Padres @ Cubs (2 of 4)
he just said he was untouchable as anyone could get in the system, not that he was ready.
kid is 22 years old.

This is a good news/bad news game. Good News: We got to face Shawn Estes. Bad News: They get to face Jason Marquis. Seriously though if Marquis can just have some decent control maybe he can have a good start against a pretty bad Padre lineup.

I'm sure Estes wanted to win. I'd prefer to blame Dusty's incompetence rather than Estes' intent.

#9 Estes' pitch selection
Is Gameday broken? It's showing that Estes threw nothing but fastballs in the upper 80's in the first inning. If that's true, we should be creaming him (like Soriano started to).
#10 Re: Game 39 Thread / Padres @ Cubs (2 of 4)
Can we send Marquis down to the minors to "figure it out"?
#11 Seventh inning stretch
Leave it to a limey 80's pop singer to put every American who f'ed up "Take me out to the ball game" to shame.
Way to go Simon Le Bon.

one damn HR bites us.
We should of scored more than 3 on this team
#13 Re: Game 39 Thread / Padres @ Cubs (2 of 4)
Jason Marquis serves up 9 hits in less than 6 innings to a team that can't hit, and his ERA stays over 5 rusn per game.
The scary part? He's a first half pitcher, who sucks so much at the end of the year that playoff teams keep him off their rosters on a regular basis.
So, as Bill Murray said to Harold Ramis in Stripes:
"This IS the good part."
Nice work by Wuertz, though.
Also -- not going to win many games when Lee, Rammy and Fukky are hitless. Eh, it happens. Estes, I'm sure, is having a good laugh.

BWAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!
It is no wonder Hendry could not get another team to bite on his contract.

From Rotoworld:
"Estes kept getting the Cubs to chase balls outside of the strike zone tonight, and he somehow only walked one batter despite throwing 40 balls among his 93 pitches. It was maybe the worst effort of the year from what has been a strong Cubs' offense."\
Ouch.

AGREED. Even when the SD bullpen came in, Cubs hitters were pressing and uncharacteristically swinging at pitches way wide of the plate. DeRosa also swung at a miserable pitch on a 3-2 count, in a key at bat. The ball bounced before the plate.
Sitting in the rain myself, I think after they fell behind, the weather had an effect of "we better do something -quick!"
Other than the September start in '03, Estes was a rag-arm, crap pitcher for us.
His velocity was better than I imagine it from that period.

Shawn Estes -- pitches 5 1/3 innings with only 1 BB? What gives?
Reminds me of the very last game he pitched for the Cubs on Sept. 24, 2003 -- a complete game shutout of the Reds to maintain the Cubs' 1 game lead in first place over the 'Stros.
An old story -- ALL major leaguers have the talent on any given day to beat their opponent. What the great ones have is consistency -- the ability to play at the top of their game day after day.

#19 Paging Dr. Gallager! Paging Dr. Sean Gallagher!
Sean Gallagher -- that sound you hear is opportunity knocking.
#20 Soto!
In addiiton to his bat, Geo Soto has thrown out 10 of 25 base stealers (40%) and has only 1 Passed Ball. I think he was 0-8 on CS to start the season (?), which means he has been really, really good since then.
But, seriously, when are the Cubs going to develop a decent position player?
Also -- Jason Kendall has thrown out 47% of base stealers, best in the league. Paul Bako is secodn at 44%. Soto is third.
Whaaaa??

That loss should surprise no one. For whatever reason, the Cubs cannot figure out soft-tossing lefties. Usually, they're making their first career start though, so that bit confuses me a little.
I knew the game was over when Aramis almost swung out of his shoes on ball four trying to win the game rather than take a walk to load the bases. Also, there was no excuse for Marquis not to make it to third on Theriot's bunt. It wasn't the greatest bunt ever, but it should have gotten the job done.
