Cubs Weekend In Review

An incomplete list, in no particular order...

Bad Weekend

Jason Marquis. Though Lou Piniella apologized for "overreacting" to Marquis' comments following Saturday's game, the pitcher's "I have a family to worry about" statement made him look stupid and foolish and...like a modern-day Major Leaguer.

Alfonso Soriano. Broke the tip of this right middle finger on Sunday during a drill meant to hone his ability to catch balls up against the outfield wall. Expected to miss game action for the next five days.

Neal Cotts. Pitched two-thirds of an inning on Sunday and now has a 27.00 ERA. 'nuf said.

Geo Soto's waistline. I hope AZ Phil can confirm or refute this, but it appeared to me from Sunday's telecast that Soto has regained a lot of the weight he lost last year, when he had his big season in the Pacific Coast League and was so impressive in his limited debut with the big club.

Kerry Wood. Tagged for a longball by the Angels' Torii Hunger, plus two singles and a double in one-third of an inning on Saturday.

Good Weekend:

Matt Murton. Went 3-for-3 in Saturday's loss to the Angels.

Felix Pie. Knocked his second Cactus League home run on Sunday; hitting .273 in the early going.

Carrie Muskat groupies. Carrie got some air time during Sunday's telecast and revealed that she had business cards printed up in Japanese to help her establish rapport with Kosuke Fukudome. I'm wondering how many cards she had printed up and how many she'll have to give Fukudome before he finally replies, through his interpreter, "What am I supposed to do with all of these cards?"

Sam Zell. As this NYT profile makes clear, Sam has little chance of being the game's most odious owner as long as Hank Steinbrenner is around.

Comments

Grrrr! Torii Hunger hit far! Famished for homers! Nom nom nom

Hopefully Pie can keep hitting like this, having him get on base will give somebody for Soriano to drive in.

I would move Muskrat up to the Bad column. While I didn't think it possible, her dry as toast air time actually made me lose even more respect for her. It was like right out of one of Molly Shannon's deadpan SNL news bits from years ago.

I thought she sounded like a chick Napoleon Dynamite. Gosh Len, just eat the meat.

lol, yeah, that's pretty much a perfect description.

I don't know if you saw Carrie on TV yesterday but she nailed the Katherine Hepburn hair and look from "On Golden Pond".

More on the Roberts trade situation...looks like the O's are getting serious again, but no indication on when a possible deal would get done. Mentions again the possibility of getting Jay Payton along with Roberts.

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/baseball/mlb...

So the real question now is "Who would you be willing to give up to keep the O's from sending over Payton?"

Don't know if anyone cares, but tickets for the Cubs last two Spring Training games vs. Mariners in Las Vegas go on sale through Ticketmaster in about an hour. Didn't get to go to Phoenix this year so this is my substitute. Crazy as it is, a guy from the minor league team there that runs the promotion said that last year they sold the two games out in about 30 minutes.

  • Cubs are going to need a 2nd baseman of the future. I'm still not convinced Baez can be that offensively on an everyday basis.

  • Updating: Per @Joelsherman1, #Cubs-#Yankees trade, if completed, would be Chapman for Torres, Warren and likely two others.

Can only imagine they'd only give that much up if he's signing an extension.

  • The official police report on Chapman:

You can draw your own conclusions.

  • Where is he going to play for the Cubs?

  • That was, ummmm, you know. A joke?

  • Even from an on-field perspective, Torres is a 19-year-old beating up High-A pitching who also plays a great SS. Even if he never develops a legit MLB power stroke, he's still an obvious 4-tool guy with a very high floor. Sucks to trade away his next 6-8 years for a closer, albeit a great one.

  • "Like the Chapman deal for Cubs from on-field POV, wish I didn't now have to feel lousy following an otherwise likable Cubs team." @jonahkeri

pretty much sums up my feelings

  • Cards lose!

  • You do have a point. The TheoJed certainly would need to address this in a transparent way. Milton Bradley was no help to the team.

  • FWIW, the Cubs would get a compensation draft pick between the 1st & 2nd rounds (around #35) if they extend a Qualifying Offer to Chapman post-2016 (probably about $17M), Chapman declines, and then he signs with another MLB club before next year's draft.

  • This all assumes Chapman doesn't want to be a free agent and possibly sign a $20MM+/year deal. We all know free agents get overpaid, sometimes dramatically (Hello, JayHey!). Not sure why Chapman would agree to the extension. If i'm is agent, I would tell him I could get I'm a $100M deal as a FA.

  • I'll root for the uniform and imagine it's left-handed Rod Beck or Randy Myers out there I suppose.

  • Amen to this. I guess it's gonna happen and I'm gonna have to suck it up but I really despise domestic abusers with every bone in my body and cannot stand them on any team I root for.

  • I just prefer they don't  acquire players that choke their wives/girlfriends.

  • So you'd rather go with Blown Save guy, when you can trade a prospect who is blocked for one piece that could get you over the top to the Big Dance? That is pretty old thinking. This is not a move that they cannot recover from if it goes south. But the upside is potentially historic.
