Cubs Trivia

Who was the first member of the Cubs to hit a home run in the World Series?
and
What was the title of the famous poem by Franklin P. Adams that immortalized the double-play combination of Tinker-to-Evers-to-Chance?
Bonus points if you can name the third baseman during that period....

Comments

I'm sure that there were multiple third basement, but on the 07-08 World Series winners it was Harry Steinfeldt.

No clue on the poem.

typo on my part, just one and it was Steinfeldt...

hmmm... baseball musings is reporting rumor that ARod is "about to sign" with the Dodgers. 5 years, less than 33 million a year.

Which doesn't make any sense at all, for a myriad of reasons.

Charley Smith

"who's on first?"

Steve Buschele

yeah baseball musings should know better....

can't discuss money and a leak would get Boras likely banned from baseball.

I'm sure $$$ is discussed during this time, but serious tampering charges if it got out.

and reading the story, no way in hell an MLB official would be anywhere near that brunch.

btw, RSox exercised Wakefield and Tavarez's options...

Where's our player from the Pirates btw?

baseballs sad lexicon

Bill James Young Talent Inventory...

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2007/basebal...

that's where the #29 ranking for the Cubs system came from I believe..

if you enjoy Bill James's writing, it's a fun read.

if you're Chad, you'll tear your eyes out with a rusty fork.

team by team rankings...

as I suspected, it has actually nothing to do with prospects...rather major league players under 29.

correct ac000000...

no one guessing the first World Series homer by a Cub huh?

(hint: the questions are related...)

==================

ROB G: The PTBNL in a trade can always be replaced by cash when a player isn't selected, typically $20,000, so that a team can take their pick of somebody off the waiver wire at a time of their own choosing (like when a 40-man roster slot is available). And when cash is received in lieu of a player, it usually isn't announced.

well where's the fun in that?

Cards have contacted Schilling as well...

Go to his 38pitches site and you'll see the recruiting letter from Theo and Larry when they traded for Schilling.

By chance was it Chance?!

close...

evers?

tinker?

Joe Tinker first ever World Series homer by a Cub...

  • I noticed that too. He's getting to everything, but when he gets right under it on a high flyball he looks uncomfortable

  • Did you expect anything different?

  • Wow, did they blow this game. Stupid plays by the kids in the 7th -- Almora throwing to 3rd instead of 2nd to keep the DP in order (when a DP probably wins the game) and Baez throwing to 3rd (to a backpedalling KB) instead of getting the easy 2nd out at first - cost them the game. Also, Contreras almost throws the ball into RF on a nonexistent pick-off play. And Maddon, for using Peralta in the first place. Did they do a bunch of shots in the dugout before the 7th? Unbelievably bad baseball. I thought Almora had a high baseball IQ?

  • Yep, can't say I disagree with that. His first batter and resulting walk was just brutal. Reminded me of a bit of Jacque Jones spiking his throws into the ground from RF.

  • The use of Peralta in any semblance of a high leverage situation is questionable at best.

    fixed that for ya.

  • The use of Peralta in any semblance of a high leverage situation is questionable at best. Hind sight is easy but Peralta had nothing.

  • "Tommy La Stella (hamstring) will remain on his minor league rehab assignment through at least Friday."

should be an interesting roster shuffle once these guys trickle back in. i imagine patton or peralta are on the hot seat for la stella's return.

  • Not certain why the site has been slowed. Worked much of Wednesday on it and will continue today. Sorry for the inconvenience. I will probably take it offline for a while, but it will be up before the game against the Mets.
