After going winless for more than two months, including a loss in Detroit (4.1 IP, 5 ER) in June, Lester is 4-0 over his last 5 starts, including his last three in a row. He beat the Brewers (6 IP, 2 ER, 10 Ks) on Thursday. The Tigers are 55-157 (.350) against him, with the usual suspect Cabrera (14-25, 1 HR, .560/.667/.840) doing the most damage. Victor Martinez is 8-19 (.421), and Davis is 14-44 (.318).

Norris, the second-most interesting man in the world, came to the Tigers in the David Price trade with Toronto. In his three starts with Detroit, he has gone 1-1 with a 4.76 ERA. He had a no-decision in KC in his last outing (6.1 IP, 3 ER). Coghlan and Soler have each had an AB against him. Soler has a hit.

Lester leads the majors with 35 SBs allowed but has been working on his throws to 1B. Detroit is ranked 12th in baseball with 68 SBs, so they are not a huge threat. (The Cubs are 6th with 78.) I’d be more worried about Cabrera’s bat than his legs.

The Braves are in tomorrow: Foltynewicz vs. Arrieta, Miller vs. Hendricks, Perez vs. Haren, and Wisler vs. Hammel.

Go Cubs!

cubs sign t.cahill to a minor league deal...for some reason. i hope he has a fun 2 weeks and stays the hell away from the MLB club.

j.lester gives up a HR to a dude who's getting his 1st ever professional AB...as a minor leaguer or a major leaguer. le sigh.

OK, Cubs, let's get ALL of this crap out of your system now. Hammel, Strop, Lester. No more of this.

Maybe Lester needs to worry less about throwing to first and focus more on throwing to home plate.

Ouch -- bases loaded, one out, Rizzo and Soler up -- gotta score there. 2 pop-ups ain't gonna cut it, boys. Bleccchh.

Can we go back to playing the Brewers, please? We look much better against really, really bad teams.

this game is a giant bag of dicks. also, deno is warming up in the pen. deno comes in with 2 outs...throws 2 pitches in the mid-50mph range...gets a ground out to end the inning...and unlike the other pitchers, he doesn't give up 21 hits and 15 runs. deno and ross could rebuild this pen.

Have I mentioned that I hate modern free agency? Really, I hate it all to hell. So far, Lester has been a good pitcher half the time he's been out there. He's had two good months and two bad. Yesterday was just awful. $150 million for that? But it isn't Lester I'm annoyed by as much as the whole free agency scam. Now the baseball pundits are talking about Fowler being a $100 million man because of his second half. I love how Fowler is playing but can't these idiots devise a system that rewards players for consistency and not one good season or in Fowler's case, one absolutely great half season? What's worse is that I think they should pony up for it. There's nobody really in the minors ready to take over the role. What's even worse than that is they'll pony up for it and he'll revert to pre-All Star game numbers. Ughh. I hate free agency. I'm so glad TheoCorp has taken the slow approach of growing from within as much as possible. Hopefully some pitchers are coming up the pike soon. Looks like we need 'em.

He's had about seven bad starts out of 24. I'm no math expert, but that's less than half. You could throw in maybe 3-4 other starts that weren't up to par, and it's still less than half. He hasn't been as consistently dominant as hoped, but I'm not that disappointed. I did see where Jesse Rogers speculated Fowler could get $15-$20 million a year. I like Fowler, but pass.

Javy Baez went 3-4, 3 singles, 1 run, 1 rbi, 1BB, No K. Now hitting .302. The I-Cubs are in Salt Lake City. Might be a good way to save airfare when the Cub get to SF next week. Thrifty.

Olt on the other hand has really struggled the past week+ with lots of 0-fers. I thought he might be able to help a bit in September, but he has to start hitting AAA pitching before we can expect him to be successful against big league pitching in pinch-hit appearances and spot starts.

Ok, I’m just gonna rant a little and everyone can flame me if you want. Am I the only one who is annoyed that we catapulted Edwin Jackson to the sun. I know the guy was horrible the last two years, but THIS year he was actually serviceable. And now we are paying him millions to pitch for Atlanta to the tune of 2.80 ERA. I for one, would rather have kept him and used him rather than the crapfest that is Motte, Wood, Hunter, Rosscup, Russell, Haren, Coke, Soriano, Medina, Schlitter, Germen, Beeler, and Roach. He also has performed better than Richard. Feel free to blast me now with “Small Sample Size”, “Low Leverage Situations”, blah, blah, blah…

getting rid of ejax to keep c.richard was weird...but so is paying wada $4m a year to sit in AAA when he's totally healthy. they didn't need a lefty (or a lefty long man with t.wood around) and though ejax wasn't setting the world on fire he wasn't doing bad out of the pen and hadn't given up a HR in 31 IP. ultimately, ejax was not a high leverage or high value guy, but getting rid of him seemed like totally unnecessary roster shuffling without much upside.

First appearance came when they were losing 6-0. Second appearance came in the last inning of a 9-0 loss. Clearly, they're relying on him heavily. In the spirit of small sample size, he did pitch the 8th inning the next night with the Braves losing 3-2. (The Cubs aren't paying all of his salary, BTW.)

Well, half of those guys you list are gone too, either released completely (like Coke, who was dropped early) or relegated to AAA (like Schlitter), so its not like the Cubs chose any of them over Jackson. Wood has been solid and Haren has a 3.63 ERA in 144 IP as a starter this year, I can't imagine you would be advocating Jackson as the 5th starter in a pennant drive or being used like Wood has been out of the pen instead of those guys. Russell actually had a 3.34 ERA prior to last night's turdfest. Regarding Jackson's stats in low leverage long relief situations (consider yourself blasted!) compared to Motte, Soriano, and Hunter, at least those guys have the ability to be dominant when they are on. Jackson really doesn't have that ability out of the pen. If even one of those guys "finds" it during this last month, the pen could be dominant with Rondon-Strop-Grimm already doing well. Jackson just didn't have anything the Cubs need now.

I don’t buy that. They had been doing that for years.

They did it with Matt Holliday. They did it with John Lackey. They did it with Mark Mulder. They did it with Jason Heyward, who had a great year for them. I’m sure there’s more but those come to mind immediately.

I attribute it more to a breakdown in what they’re doing in terms of development than a culture thing.

  • TarzanJoeWallis (view)

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.
