Brewers @ Cubs: Davies vs Arrieta (Game 120)

"We're leading in the division."
"Which one?"
"All of them."MIL (52-67): RHP Zach Davies (9-5, 3.80)
CHC (76-43): RHP Jake Arrieta (14-5, 2.55)
First pitch: 1:20pmCST

Arrieta beat the Cards on Friday (5.2 IP, 1 ER, 6 K, 2 BB). He won against these Brewers in April, giving up 1 ER in 5 innings. Overall, they are 19-74 (.257) against him. Villar is 2-2.

Davies gave up 5 ER in as many innings to lose against the Reds his last time out. He beat the Cubs last month in Milwaukee, giving up 1 ER in 6.1 innings. They are 5-38 (.132) against him, for some reason. Soler is 1-2. Another one of those HRs would be nice.

Hendricks (11-7, 2.19) and the Cubs join Anderson (4-4, 3.42) and the Rockies as the mile-high clubs tomorrow at 7:40pmCST.

Go Cubs!

Substitute Fowller for Szczur in today's lineup and I'd like their chances against a lefty in the playoffs

From Eric S yesterday: "Substitute Fowller for Szczur in today's lineup and I'd like their chances against a lefty in the playoffs" I gotta disagree. Fowler has hit for higher average from the right side in his career. I would put both Fowler and Szczur in against a LHP and Heyward out. I would go Szczur in LF, Fowler in RF, and Soler in RF.

....and that's why you don't walk guys with a big lead. 2 out, nobody on...2 BB and a 3-run jack makes it 5-3. Sheesh. Nieuwenhuis has 11 HR on the year -- 5 against the Cubs.

9 walks and 3 hits (2 HR) through 6ip for MIL...and the cubs still have a 2 run lead. sweet. arrieta really shit the bed after a few nice innings.

Haha! Patton comes from the same, "I'm great in the minors but pee down my leg in the majors" school as Chris Rusin and Michael Bowden!!

yes. hit in the foot, resting tonight. the (not at all) funny thing is he'd most likely be back in the bigs with the cog injury at this point if he would have just reported to AAA.

With 42 games left in the season, the Cubs now have more wins than in the entire seasons of: -2010 -2011 -2012 -2013 -2014 So....enjoy these times! As Bulls fans from the MJ era can tell you -- nothing lasts forever.

Rumor going around that Rob Zastryzny and Felix Pena are getting called up. I hope Lackey is too broken.

pena in/patton out makes sense...zas coming up leads me to believe something's wrong with someone else, though. i think zas is promising, though it seems he's a middle-rotation guy type at best. he's been really encouraging since he moved up to AAA and his control looked a bit more in check. he's got everything but control going for him most of the time. i like him better than his #s even if he might need more time. he'll probably be a nice AAA/MLB up/down injury option in 2017 if his control doesn't go to hell.

I have a really bad feeling that Rondon will go to the DL. I was at the game yesterday and myself and many others likely were very surprised that he didn't pitch in the 8th yesterday. He last pitched in GM 1 of the DH and threw under 20 pitches, so he should have been available if healthy. I can say that I'm one of the few people to see Jake struggle twice and Patton pitch twice (I was at the 7-2 6/23 loss to the Cards). Also, why hasn't Rivero been called up yet? I'm a bit surprised.

he also has control issues and relies very heavily on deception for his effectiveness (like his insane K rate and making batters look foolish on swing/misses). multiple injuries + time off usually doesn't fare well for these types of guys. i'm a fan, but it's hard to project his future with the roller coaster of health he's been on.

I think if you had ranked players by how much the team could ill afford to have them miss significant time, Steele would be right at the top of the list.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
