Hammel had another short outing (65 pitches over 5.2, 1 ER) against the Brewers on Wednesday and did not factor in the 3-2 win. He’s 5-2 with a 2.23 in night games. The Tigers are 10-44 (.227) against him. Cabrera is 4-11.

Sanchez had a good June (3-1, 2.63), including his win over the Cubs (7.2 IP, 0 ER), but he’s been sliding since. In his three August starts, he’s 0-2 with a 7.50 ERA. The Cubs are 17-86 (.198) against him. Montero has the most ABs but is only 3-20 with a HR.

Go Cubs!

cog! the wind is helping things out tonight...tough night for a pitcher.

Hammel doing a nice job of validating Maddon's decisions to pull him early from games the Cubs have a chance to win. He has not been the same pitcher since the leg injury.

Ryan Williams is their best minor-league starter this season. 23-year-old first-year pitcher out of East Carolina U. 12-3 overall, 8-2 at Tennessee with a .995 WHIP. Only 6.8 K/9, though, so doesn't miss as many bats as a top prospect should. (Null's K/9 is 5.3.) Anyway, pitchers don't get to skip Iowa. Not a lot of starting pitching at Iowa right now. Carlos Pimentel looks to be about the best, but he walks slightly more than four men per nine innings. Null does have this ridiculous stat: 8 walks in 103 innings.

Ugh...McKinney's season over due to hairline fracture (knee), Edwards to DL due to finger callous.....not the Cubs night (so far)

Any experts in the occult here? I was wondering why Schwarber's WAR is listed at 1.7.

steele MRI on friday.  counsell expects an IL stint.

no current plans for his rotation replacement.

I would say also in the bright side column is Busch looked pretty good overall at the plate. Alzolay…man, that hurts but most of the time he’s not giving up a homer to that guy. To me the worst was almonte hanging that pitch to Garcia. He hung another one to the next hitter too and got away with it on an 0-1.

amaya blocked like 6-8 of smyly's pitches in the dirt very cleanly...not even an exaggeration, smyly threw a ton of pitches bouncing in tonight.

neris looking like his old self was a relief (no pun), too.

In looking for bright spots the defense was outstanding tonight. The “stars” are going to need to shine quite a bit brighter than they did tonight offensively though for this to be a successful season.

Good baseball game. Hopefully Steele is pitching again in April (but I’m not counting on it).

    boo.

smyly to face the 2/3/4 hitters with a man on 2nd in extras.

this doesn't seem like a 8 million dollar managerial decision.

i 100% agree with you, but i dunno how jed wants to run things.  the default is delay.  i would choose brown.

like hellfrozeover says, could be smyly since he's technically fresh and stretched.

anyway, on a pure talent basis....brown is the best option.

Use pitchers when you believe they're good. Don't plan their clock.

I'm sorry. I'm simply anti-clock/contract management. Play guys when they show real MLB potential talent.

If Brown hadn't been hurt with the Lat Strain he would've gotten the call, and not Wick.

    Give him a chance.

    But Wesneski probably gets it
