Cubs @ White Sox: Arrieta vs Gonzalez (Game 98)

Call it a comeback.CHC (59-38): RHP Jake Arrieta (12-4, 2.60)
CHW (48-50): RHP Miguel Gonzalez (2-5, 4.41)
First pitch: 7:10pmCST

Arrieta returned to form but came away with a no-decision against the Mets on Tuesday (7 IP, 1 ER, 8 K, 1 BB). The White Sox are 22-87 (.253) against him. Morneau is 5-14.

Gonzalez had a no-decision in Seattle his last time out (6 IP, 3 ER, 5 K, 2 BB). He’s 2-3 with a 5.86 at home this season, and has a 2.77 ERA and 0.89 WHIP in four July starts. Overall, the Cubs are 13-64 (.203) against him. Zobrist is 6-29 with a HR.

A trade bringing Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs for top prospect SS Gleyber Torres and perhaps others seems imminent. Reports have the last piece being Chapman agreeing to a 4yr/60m extension.

Chris Sale’s five-game suspension will end in time for him to take the mound at Wrigley on Thursday.

Hendricks (9-6, 2.27) versus Shields (4-12, 4.99) tomorrow at 6:10pmCST.

Go Cubs!

the 'crosstown classic' sure has lost it's magic with interleague. the excitement level is barely noticable...maybe it's a bit more hype in the city, itself.

chapman showing up and available tomorrow night. i'm sure he'll be a bit hit. hope he doesn't choke. dude has a rifle for an arm. he'll add a bit of punch to the bullpen.

bryant's in the dugout filling a police report BECAUSE HE JUST GOT ROBBED. f'n cabrerra...

If the ball didn't deflect off the pitcher's mound, the game wouldn't have ended. Montgomery did miss his location though, but if that same contact was made and went in any of direction, good chance of ground out if it doesn't get through. If it was 1 night later, Chapman would be out there and we probably would be going to extras. Also, If KB wasn't robbed of a HR, perhaps we would have won. We will never know. Nice play by Melky though.

Down a run. Fowler on first. Nobody out. KB singles to left, Fowler makes it to third, perfect throw from Cabrera nails KB trying to stretch for 2nd. So, instead of 1st & 3rd and no out, you have 3rd with one out. It was a perfect throw, but why take the chance with 3-4-5 hitters coming up?

Splitting hairs, but Jake's pitch was poor execution, while KB's play was a poor decision (and the 2nd time he got thrown out trying to stretch in the game). Poor execution happens. Poor decisions are preventable. Speaking of poor decisions -- Baez's steal of 3rd made absolutely no sense.

The Cubs are stronger defensively than most of the teams they play. In order to capitalize on that, they have to a) put the ball in play and b) run the bases aggressively. That said, Cabrera has a strong, accurate arm, as witnessed by his 97 outfield assists over 12 seasons--mostly left field but also a lot of center. Bryant is rarely thrown out, but I guess you have to know who's throwing the ball.

KB now with 0 RBI in his last 10 games and 1 in his last 15, despite having 19 hits in his last 15 games and raising his batting average from .278 to .286 over that span. Maybe have Zobrist hit 2 and KB hit 4? Also -- no HR in the last 15 games -- time for a bunch. Starting tomorrow.

They won those trades and sacrificed their culture. That’s exactly their problem.

The other part that’s kind of crazy is they made two very high profile trades, one for Goldschmidt and one for Arenado, and they very clearly won those trades. They just haven’t been able to develop players the last handful of years the way they usually do.

I guess the moral there is it’s hard to stay on top of your game and be good at what you do in perpetuity.

Marmol was extended at the beginning of the year. Two years I believe.

Craig Counsell doesn’t have a timetable for Cody Bellinger who technically has two cracked ribs on his right side. CT scan showed it today.

Thought it might have been David Peralta given the open 40 man spot and how PCA has played so far.

I hope they keep Mozeliak a few more years. Marmol too!

    welp...

    bellinger...fractured rib.

a not-very-ready PCA will probably be called up when it would be much better for him to be in AAA getting regular ABs.

i have no hard data, but i'm seeing the same thing.

there used to be some parks where that was rampant (colorado during the todd helton days comes to mind), but i'm seeing it all over the place the past couple seasons.
